I think he could use it as a functioning iPod/Internet device though correct along with inputting his Apple ID?

I need to activate this "Find my iPhone" feature, alway saw horrible reviews on the App Store and figured it was useless and not reliable.

You don't need to download the app.

I don't understand why people would want to stay on iOS 6. 7 is so much better in just about every way.
A couple of reasons, at least in my case.

1. I'm jailbroken. If I update to iOS 7, I lose my jailbreak.
2. I do not in any way care for the color choices of iOS 7.

I'm just fine waiting for the iOS 7 jailbreak running iOS 6.1 because I have everything iOS 7 has either with a tweak or an app. Once iOS 7 is jailbroken I can update, jailbreak and apply the colors I want to the OS.

In the context of this thread, I have iCaughtU Pro and a passcode. Three wrong passcodes and my phone snaps your picture and sends it to me along with your location data. My phone is set to autowipe at five wrong passcodes. Because it's jailbroken that's likely to throw it into a boot loop that any ignorant thief is unlikely to figure out how to fix or why it's happening. Try to power off my phone at the lockscreen (either shut it down or hard reset) and you can't. You have to enter the passcode to do that and I have another tweak that requires a passcode to shut down or restart. Certain apps require a passcode (because of a tweak I have) to access them so even if you managed to get to my springboard there's still apps you can't access.

iCaughtU Pro allows me to do certain things to get certain info or wipe the device remotely via text message. So, basically, my device is useless to a thief unless they get my passcode. Even if they shut off WiFi or cellular they still need my passcode to do anything. And as long as I can text my phone I can set WiFi and cellular to stay on no matter what the thief trys to shut if off. I also have Find My iPhone installed and on.

Lastly, my lockscreen is devoid of the slider and the slider text because I like minimalism. Someone unfamiliar with jailbreaking may be confused for a while as to how to even get the passcode screen to come up.

The 'find my iPhone' app in the App Store just allows you to track your iDevices using the app. The feature that actually reports where a device is is built into iOS itself.

In other words, your iPhone can still be tracked without the app being installed. You just need to log into iCloud.com.

They need to come up with a way that keeps thieves from activating a stolen phone BUT helps honest people make some attempt to return it.

Maybe if the phone is locked and FMI is enabled, a splash screen pops up with alternate contact info for the owner...

A phone that totally locks down and can't connect to wifi renders FMI pretty much useless as an actual locating service. If they're going to disable the phone completely, they should just rename it Cripple My iPhone.

Lost mode lets you display a message on your lost phone. You can put your phone into lost mode using the FMI app or iCloud.com.

So am I the first one to lose this phone? :( Stupid of me to leave my 5-day unused 5s in my bag in the cabin during my US Airways flight to Charlotte. Someone could have taken it during the flight, realized it only upon getting off the plane. Couldn't file a report cos my connecting flight is already boarding.

Enough of the pity party, I activated the fingerprint scan and pin, will they be able to hack around and use it? I want that mothafutha to not be able to use the phone.

They can't do anything with it. It's essentially an expensive door stop now. If they turned it off, that's it. You'll never find it again.

My wife's phone was stolen over the weekend, turned off before I could do a search. The only point of find my iPhone is if you actually lose it as once the thief turns your phone of that's it.

Why can't Apple implement a simple security measure? Require the passwords for turning the phone off too.

This is getting confusing to me, so basically as long as you have Location on, Find my iPhone on, and a passcode enabled there is NOTHING the thief can get into? At what point does this "Activation lockout" or whatever it's called that was implemented in iOS7 take place and what's it do?

Also if they are locked out of it, they can't turn off the Location setting right so basically all they can do is shut it off? And as long as it's on I am able to track it via iCloud?

That's right, unless you have the options to access the notification centre or control centre on the lock screen on.

If find my iPhone is on, the device cannot be restored without a password.

I heard that thieves can just damage the phone and take it in to the apple store for a repair / replacement ?

They should check owners ID or some kind of stolen phone register... but I have never been asked for ID when I have had a need for Applestore repairs...

That's because warranty is tied to the device, not the owner.

Sure but Apple should fix this because
a) it lets thieves profit from their wrong doing and hence creates a market.
b) it must cost apple in extra repair costs

Can't be too difficult to ask for proof of purchase or owner ID to do a warranty fix.. can it?

I dont understand how its not possible in ios 7 ,you cant restore in dfu mode? How apple server can check when iphone is in dfu mode that find my phone is enabled???

It has nothing to do with apple servers... When you connect your phone to iTunes and hit restore it immediately pops up... It's built into the OS...

I know that message is pop up when the phone is on and password protected but while iphone is in dfu mode? Wow

It still is a part of the OS... It doesn't need to connect AFAIK... Have never tried it so I don't have total clarity...

Could you show us a screenshot if you go to iCloud.com and enter the account/password for the iPhone in question then click Find My iPhone?

Activation lock is triggered when a phone is done resetting to factory settings or recovering from back up. It will request the Apple ID password of the person who was last active on the phone.

I've actually already had to do a DFU wipe and recovery on my 5S (longer story) and the moment it was done and powered on with just the factory settings it requested my Apple password before allowing me to proceed through set up.

Restoring to factory settings no longer makes your phone forget who owns it.

Hopefully in iOS 8, they will have a Destruct My iPhone option. So thieves hands would get blown off. Or emit deadly radiation option.

Good idea but I would prefer "bit*ch slap the person, spit on his face and self destruct" option in iOS.

Edit: On a serious note, did you contact NSA and asked them to scan user email/phone database and see if anyone has mentioned anything about finding/stealing the iPhone in that area?

That is awesome, so if it were to be stolen would it better to not factory restore/wipe via iCloud as this would turn off location services and NOT allow you to track it anymore right? This stuff is good to know beforehand you just never know.

Thanks for all the info guys and unfortunately to the OP sorry for the loss.

Jailbreaking is fine. But seems most of ur tweaks are geared towards security. iOS 7 makes my phone as useless to a thief as urs. And jalbreaks are becoming less and less appealing with every iOS update. And I believe it's gonna be a while before we see a JB for iOS 7. If we see one at all.

Yes you wont be able to track it while it isnt connected to internet via WiFi or cellular. However if thieft will try to restore iPhone as new, he wont be able to activate it and iPhone will be useless

If the bad guys a pro, you'd be surprised at what can be accomplished. They don't steal them for nothing :)
