The iOS lock feature is enabled on another partition (maybe the bootloader) and not the OS directly, hence, there is no way around till its hacked up for a jailbreak or specifically for this purpose (not anytime soon)

Hopefully in iOS 8, they will have a Destruct My iPhone option. So thieves hands would get blown off. Or emit deadly radiation option.

Technically OP lost it so therefore it's not stolen. What if a innocent bystander found the phone and was attempting to return it? You going to blow him/her up as well?

If the bad guys a pro, you'd be surprised at what can be accomplished. They don't steal them for nothing :)

It's practically impossible to bypass a hardware lock. You'd have to solder a new bootloader chip, which is very difficult and impractical.

We won't be seeing any bypass for at least a couple of years. I'm not worried.

Jailbreaking is fine. But seems most of ur tweaks are geared towards security. iOS 7 makes my phone as useless to a thief as urs. And jalbreaks are becoming less and less appealing with every iOS update. And I believe it's gonna be a while before we see a JB for iOS 7. If we see one at all.
I have maybe three or four tweaks for security. I made a $534 investment. I want to keep it. :D

The rest of my 20-30 or so tweaks relate to making my life easier and making iOS the way I want it. I didn't talk about those because this thread was about a stolen iPhone and the kind of security iOS 7 now provides.

My point was that because of jailbreaking I have everything that iOS 7 gives you with iOS 6, in particular security-wise (on topic with this thread). Consequently, I'm quite comfortable waiting for the iOS 7 jailbreak. Sure, I'd like it to come soon, but if I have the same functionality that it provides right now on my current OS plus my OS is themed and laid out the way I want it, well I'm not in a hurry.

Thieves will scam another poor sap. :p
Sell him an unusable phone or sell it on eBay "As Is" "For Parts"

Sorry if you tried this, but did you try to contact the airline (try baggage dept ) from where the plane landed and you switched plane. Calling corporate airline will not help much.
A lot of times there is some time between them cleaning planes and turning in lost items to lost and found once I left something in the pocket of the seat ( southwest) I called as soon as I got home and no luck but someone said to call back next day. I checked back a day later and they had it. I was lucky I lost them on the plane on the leg home so just had to go to my airport baggage claim and retrieve them.

Believe there is honest people out there when I find something of value if its possible to turn it in to lost or found or find owner I always do. Karma can be a good thing :)

Sure but Apple should fix this because
a) it lets thieves profit from their wrong doing and hence creates a market.
b) it must cost apple in extra repair costs

Can't be too difficult to ask for proof of purchase or owner ID to do a warranty fix.. can it?

Many devices are bought second hand, refurbished, used, etc. So there is no proof of purchase/ownership in those cases. Do those people not deserve to be serviced by Apple because they didn't buy their phones brand new?

Apple's method of tying the serial number to the warranty works pretty well and makes for great customer service.
