Ok I will try this again, do I just use these steps below?

"Download RecBoot 1.0.2
I found it here: http://www.sebby.net/659-released-recboot-1-0-2/
try newer version as well http://www.sebby.net/2011/11/looking-for-recboot/ 2.2
Plug in your iPhone.
Close iTunes.
Run "RecBoot"
Click the "Exit Recovery Mode" button.
Phone boots up
done

I did the above.

After exit recover mode your phone should boot up normal.

If you still want to jailbreak/restore after that you can. Once it boots though you should be back to where you were before you had any issues.

The original directions were confusing. RecBoot is to get your phone out of recovery mode, so it can do a normal startup with the firmware that is already on the phone.

Have you tried editing the WIndows hosts file?

This is from Apple's own trouble-shooting site:

----You're basically taking that "hosts" file and erasing everything in it and just saving it as an empty file. When you run iTunes or any other program that uses that file, it'll automatically rebuild itself with the data it needs.

It isn't a firmware signing issue, thus editing the host file is not pertinent to his issue. It's hardware related to the boot process of the phone.

Yea the above doenst work, right after I unplug the apple logo comes up and it goes straight back into recovery mode

Are you sure of this, the error DOES come immediately after the restore status says:

"Verifying iPhone restore with apple"

Just wondering

pwned DFU is the one thing i haven't really tried bc I'm not sure what to do.

I think this is a classic case of trying to restore a jailbroken phone while in regular DFU mode. You must be in Pwned DFU mode. Use redsn0w > Extras > Pwned DFU. Then follow the instruction.

Make sure your hosts file doesn't have any entries for Apple and then restore with iTunes.

actually got a coworker to give me his broken iphone4 for a reasonable price and swapped the motherboard from it into my iphone4, I am now up and running.

Jailbreaking may or may not have had something to do with this but I find it highly coincidental that this didn't happen until a week after I first JB.

Either way I'll never feel comfortable JB'ing again, "just in case"

I hear you, but the fact is that jailbreaking is NEVER related to hardware failure (barring someone frying their radio by restoring an iPSW with a baseband over an iPad baseband iPhone, and even then, that's an error made when restoring, not a symptom of the jailbreak itself).

The thing is, nothing was going on when it died.

I got a text message, and then it shut off and went into recovery mode.

Just sounds fishy, idk

I have also done this already

You say you got a text message, though I highly doubt it, maybe you got hacked?

There's a contest held every year, for hackers. A range of devices is set up, MacBook pro/android phones/iphones/other random devices. Teams/individuals are given 3 days to hack any device of their choosing, each day that passes the rules are lightened. Day 1 requires a wireless control, with nothing other than communicating with the device over a wifi network, day 2 hackers are allowed to have 1 link clicked on any device of their choice, and on day 3 hackers are allowed to exploit popular 3rd party software (java/flash/etc).

Whoever successfully hacks the device first, keeps it. However, any device can be exploited by other teams, and have their exploit sold. An internet security firm would then offer to purchase the hack/exploit for up to $20 grand.

I bring this up because a year or so ago, a hacker managed to take full control of an iPhone 4 using only a single text message. iOS would process the text message by reading a very small and simple code sent to it, and by somehow managing to insert his own code (I have no idea how) the iPhone would run it, and he would be given access.

I really honestly doubt this is what happened, I just thought some of you would like to hear about this contest :), I'll see if I can remember the name of it and get a link to the Wikipedia article.

Edit: There you go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn2Own

It's called pwn2own, a pretty interesting read if you've got the time, kinda cool to see how easily apple's devices are exploited, even with their reputation as extremely secure.

The text was from a person I know, so I doubt it.

Guess so, this sucks, anyone selling a 3GS for cheap?

I refuse to pay $150 for another iPhone 4 so close to launch

I just paid $150 for get my 3GS replaced… it's still cheaper than buying a new one. As for the iPhone 4… same thing; it would cost you $550 (?) for a new one, so $150 is a good deal. It's not like you'll be stuck with another contract for 2 years.

Not such a great deal when you know you can figure something else out...

Which I did, found a broken ip4 took the motherboard out of it and put it inside my phone, and wh-lah phones working again

Cost me $35 for the broken phone and 30 to switch out the motherboard

Also clearly the "error 9" wasnt related to my plug in usb port bc thats still the same and now I'm up and running
