turn by turn in ios 6 is definitely awesome. gave me alternative routes the other day and got me out of the traffic coming back home. i actually learned a new route that was only 3 miles longer.

problem with the maps is the accuracy of the data and the lack of businesses (POI?) not the flyover or turn by turn. they all work.

if only they would just add european sports support to Siri (like UEFA Champions league and stuff)...

Thanks for the reply, I'm trying to establish whether I have a fault & need to do something about it.

Don't want to encourage anything dangerous, but was it positioned where you could see the screen and, if so, did it reflect an accurate position of your car at all times?

I wasn't actually driving myself, I was the passenger so had an eye on it at all times. Yes, it did reflect an accurate position the entire journey. Yours sound of of the ordinary. Let us know if you find a fix.

I was shocked all the slack Maps was getting, I've used the GPS non stop for days and it has been incredible. Even got me to a place that I don't know very well, 15 minutes faster then it would normally take me.

Also tested it out on local routes, and surprisingly it took the routes I normally take where other GPS' usually try to take me different routes.

Turn by turn has been excellent here in Seattle. I'm not noticing much lag and it's been accurate as far as location on my 4S. I, for one, am really enjoying the new Maps app.

It seems to be pulling in the POI info from Yelp so it's as accurate as that service is. I use yelp a lot so for me, it's working out well. What I do notice it that you have to zoom in pretty close to see more of the POIs. If you have a wider area you are viewing, it looks like there are less POI. I also like that I can add or easily correct something.

Back home in NY, a restaurant I frequent was on the opposite side of the street on the map so I sent in a correction. It wasn't far, just literally across the street. It also listed a little store I had never noticed and wasn't on Google Maps down the street from me that sell french macarons. WHAT? Yes, I went there and bought some. lol

I was hoping that might be the case, as at least I may be able to get something done about it, thank you very much.

Can anyone else confirm that the phone reflects their position accurately at all times, rather than a significant lag like mine?

My phone is out of warranty in a couple of weeks, so if I have a problem that I was unaware of until turn by turn was introduced, I'd really like to have it resolved.

Cheers.

I think the turn-by-turn is great too. Works well. But the maps, that is another issue. The incorrect data led the turn-by-turn to take me to the wrong place earlier today (a huge IKEA that has been there for years). I wish when the navigation is active, it is easier to zoom out quickly to see nearby streets or check traffic far ahead or whatever. It only lets you zoom out a little bit and if you want to zoom out more, you have to hit "Overview" and then manipulate the map and then hit "Resume". This is hard to do if you need to do it in a pinch while driving.

I used the turn by turn from JFK Airport to my residence in Staten Island. About a 40 minute trip. Worked flawlessly...and there was no discernible data usage. I don't know why everyone is so critical of the program.

I'm using it just to test it, even though I dont especially need it because I know my current city well.

Thus far, no issues. None whatsoever. It's always gotten me to where I needed to be.

Another point, being in the Army I move a lot, and have been using Google maps to get around for years. In that time, I've encountered bizarre directions and funky mapping, but never did it occur to me to get on the internet and bitch about it.

At any rate, Apple Maps has been flawless for me.

I'd imagine that, due to the fact Apple Maps are vector based, the data usage is going to be far less than the old Google Maps, but has anybody done a good long journey, several hundred miles and taken a reading of the data usage?

Have you guys tried the newest Google Maps on a Jelly Bean phone? In my family, we have a AT&T 4S and a GSM unlocked Galaxy Nexus.

The reason I ask... The wife and I took a trip to see family this weekend and decided to run both phones side by side on the dash to see if Apple Maps or Google Maps would be better for our needs.

Right now, GMaps are so much better than AMaps it's really no contest. GMaps has a much better, human like voice. GMaps has better POIs and street details. GMaps has "estimated time until arrival" whereas I cannot find it on AMaps (maybe I'm missing it). It has the "offline" feature (which kinda sucks, but at least it's something)

With that said, I LOVE the LOOK of AMaps. Simple and clean as you can get. GMaps seems to refresh a couple times a second whereas AMaps seems to refresh much faster, making it look much more "real life", if that makes since. Siri doesn't SOUND as natural, but ACTS more natural than Google Now..

With some refinement, AMaps will be as awesome as GMaps are today. The best thing about all this? Competition! (as long as someone doesn't get sue-happy)

That's a pretty good review. I only wanna add on the last point that "(as long as anyone also take other's property right seriously)". :)

I have used it every time that I have gone anywhere over this weekend. Not that I really needed it, but just to see how well it performed. Each time it has worked fine without any errors. It seems that certain geographic areas are having more problems than others. Hopefully something that Apple will correct soon.

Quite a few replies, but I can't see any comments as to whether anyone is experiencing a lag or whether their position is accurately reflected on the map at all times.

Would be grateful to hear more feedback, thank you.

No lag on a 4s here. In fact it does as well as Motion X (a navi system I really love using) in terms of accouncing turns in a timely but not odd fashion. Some apps I've used say in 1.6 miles or in 1200ft, etc....not here. So far on the highway, before an exit you get the typical 2 mile announcement followed by take exit #45 to XXX Street followed by a turn right, etc...and at intersections 1/4 mile turn right and then again at 500ft.

Overall, I'm pleased. I also like how it shows turns graphically. The larger of the two hear is a secondary road then right below it is 315, the highway I needed to turn onto rather soon afterwards. Nice touch how it's displayed. I like the aethetics that mimic road signs too.

one thing i noticed on my 4S is the phone doesn't get hot like it does with navigon and waze. especially navigon

what the hell... people not having a go at apple maps?

I must be day dreaming again, hopefully i'll wake up soon and everything will be back to normal! :p

Philadelphia to Ottawa. 442 miles. Traffic was on. iPhone was locked and unlocked at various times. Sent two pictures over iMessage. Couple reroutes due to fuel/rest stops. Should be no more than 13MB.

well the problem is, it has like 10 POI for the entire Turkish Republic. When you search for anything, 99% of the time it comes up with nothing and the rest 1% is wrong. Hospitals are the only correct thing in Turkey. I was passing by the biggest mall in Istanbul (probably one of the biggest in Europe also) and it wasn't there in maps. Google maps had all of it, even local cafes, gas stations and all. Now we only have hospitals.

Some province names are misspelled. Place where our business is surprisingly listed as a POI, but it's a business that closed up shop 5-6 years ago. I've reported it, twice in the last 2 weeks. No response or change.

I think the maps app's interface, turn by turn system, siri integration, iOS integration, graphics, 3D they are all great. But they need to throw all of their data to garbage, and get all new, completely new data. They need to learn that the world is not the United States.

Apple maps interface with turn by turn and graphics and all with G Maps data would be the best thing.

Yandex maps data is very good for Istanbul but the interface is so bad, i literally can't understand anything. So, can't use that too. Plus, i can't use routing without turn by turn. Would cause an accident to try and drive and look at iPhone constantly to check out where my turn is. (especially roundabouts, crossroads etc.)

Last call please for any help with this.

I have an appointment to see Apple tomorrow afternoon (UK time) and I am hoping that as many forum members as possible could confirm (from their own experience) that their iPhone shows them at exactly the right place on the map at all times whilst they are in motion using navigation.

Not spoken directions, but rather their position on the screen. Mine unfortunately lags which causes issues in cities.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to swap it if this is a common complaint as the phone is in otherwise excellent condition.

Thanks again.

"at all times" is a tall order. Basically, in most areas, the GPS will lock on just fine. Other places, worse cell service, in an area where you're partially blocked from GPS sats = not 100% accurate but its never been more than 20 feet off while driving.

And by lag do you mean 5 seconds? 10 seconds? a minute?

In my experience, Apple Maps is just as accurate as any other GPS Nav app on the market. Maybe the GPS in your phone is broken or the area you're in is bad. Best to test w/ someone next to you w/ same kind of device if you need to figure that out.
