This sort-of OCD can be related to a deep lack of self esteem, my interior psychologist tells me. A mark won't make your life any better/worse.

Amen to this! I will never understand why people are this way over Apple stuff. I understand being careful with stuff but putting tape on a product to keep it from getting scratched! That's just silly!:rolleyes:

I admit I'm a little OCD when it comes to my gadgets (and also my car) but its not unjustified. Part of the appeal of apple products is the design, so the last thing I want is chunks out of the back of the iPad caused by an official accessory. So far the tape on the hinge method (which took no more than 10
Mins to get right) has protected my iPad keeping it looking like new. 10 mins for that reassurance is not really a big deal OCD or not.

Secondly by keeping my iPad (and also my iPhone) in 'perfect' condition means I get maximum resale value when the time comes for the next model, this is important for me as it means that I need to find very little extra cash for the next one. So my 'deep lack of self esteem' as someone put it, saves me money and allows me to spend very little on the next big thing :)

Saying that my plan fell apart recently when I ran into the sea in Mexico......with my 'perfect' condition iPhone in my pocket. DESTORYED. Yea, the plan is not always foolproof :/

I understand this. It's exactly the same way for me. However I really don't go OCD on it. I just use a skin on the back of the iPad and I don't use a film because it's glass that never scratched. From there, various cases protect in the usual ways and I don't worry about it. I've always sold them pristine.....

I used the scotch tape idea on my iPad 2 and on my new iPad. Whoever said the scotch tape would some how ruin the aluminum finish, I'm not sure how that's possible. Scotch tape is not designed to be a permanent adhesive.

Now, I'm sure that the smart cover can eventually wear the tape away and still make its mark on your iPad eventually, but then so be it. At least you gave it a minimal effort to keep it in good shape.

A lot of us like to sell their Apple stuff every year so they can buy the new model. Nothing wrong with keeping things nice. I also like to put a headphone and charge port cover on my iPad and iPhone. And after seeing how disgusting other peoples' charge ports get, especially on their phones, I think it's totally worth it.

After my previous thread where I stated my reasons for returning my smart cover (hinge damage to the iPad etc). A lot of people said they had no issues, and a few said that they had applied some scotch tape to the side of the iPad so that the smart cover magnet and hinge do not make metal to metal contact.

Anyway when I spend money I AM OCD about keeping it like new and just cant accept that a smartcover, something thats meant to protect the iPad, can actually damage it. Thats not okay.

However I really like the smartcover and so I re-bought one (dark grey) and decided to use the scotch tape method on the magnet and hinge itself rather than a strip down the side of the iPad. The results are almost invisible and give peace of mind that no scratching will happen to the iPad itself.

Check out the results, I had to take these shots ridiculously close up for you to even be able to see the tape. Hardest part was cutting the tape to the right size but its worth it:

Magnet strength does not seem to be affected either :)

Ruben, it's been more than half a year since you created the thread. Can you confirm that scotch tape will indeed prevent scruff marks from forming?

I can't quite see the tape in your pictures, but did you applied the tape on all 3 sections that will make contact with the iPad?

Is there a reason why you didn't just put a slice of scotch tape on the iPad instead? I have the Incipio feather that is compatible with the smart cover. I figure if I put the scotch tape on the ipad, it won't matter since the case will cover the tape anyways. It would be great if you can address the pros and cons to both approaches. I don't want any scruff marks on my new iPad 4!

Hi,

Yes the scotch tape is still in place and still as invisible as in my pics. I have found this method to be perfect to be honest.

Yes you are right, I have tape on the magnetic bar and then 2 separate pieces of tape around each hinge. The reason why I close this over just applying the scotch tape to the iPad is simple, on the iPad you could see the tape.

To get mine looking almost invisible I had to cut custom sized strips of tape that fitted almost exactly perfectly. My advice would be to spend time getting this part right (and it IS fiddly and frustrating) because the end results are worth it. I had many a failed attempt until I got it right, fingers stuck together etc :)

I also have the dark grey Smart Cover. I've had it for a couple months now since I bought my iPad. At first I wasn't too happy about spending the $40 on it but I like the fact that it protects my iPad's screen when I'm not using it and I can use it as a stand when watching videos.

I think it's messed up to spend a chunk of change on a "smart" cover just to add scotch tape to make sure it's gonna work as it should to begin with
