Try having a couple of kids under 3. I used to be OCD about scratches and marks.

LOL yes! They're not my kids, they're my nieces and nephew. They love banging the stylus into the screen when they're using the Penultimate app. Or, ripping away the Smart Cover because it's "fun". I stopped caring a long time ago. That's why I have AppleCare+ plus I'd rather have my nieces and nephew happy than a "perfect" iPad.

I recently bought an used version of the og smart cover off eBay. The hinges looked like some of these images and the magnet had dark spots on it.

All of these threads seem to be for the iPad 2 and old version of the smart cover. Anyone actually have these issues with the new iPad and updated smart covers?

Does the tape make the magnet weaker since its not as direct of a contact as metal on metal? I noticed that after applying my I carbons skin my smart cover magnet got weaker. It's easier for the smart cover to be slid off. Even when I have it in my hand opened using my iPad I can feel it shifting. I didn't feel this before the I carbon skin.

I really wish the magnets in general were stronger.

Congrats on that smart cover. Apple on Apple is cool. Works nicely but why not consider before your buy the Marware CEO. hybrid? You get so much more protection pls sleep/wake. Ok. Maybe you want minimal bulk. I see that point but a quarter inch of style extra only helps. Check it out. Google it or YouTube it ,you might agree. God luck with your smart device and cover. I'm jealous. Wish I had the nads to go that unprotected. That's just me. Must be great for you. Only thing is hw device looks after 15 months of exposure to clumsiness.

Wow excellent work. You must have no problems putting on screen protectors. A screen protector came with the Smart Feather so I decided to put it on. Anyway, the installation was pretty good for me. There's one small piece of lint underneath the protector on the black border (not on the viewing part of the screen). If I was good at installing these things I'd lift it off and try to get rid of it, but I know with my skill level it would be worse, if I attempted to fix it so I am leaving it alone.

One reason I got the Smart Feather is because it locks in the Smart Cover. I figure if it doesn't move it won't scratch the aluminum case.

It's a relief to know people on here are more OCD than me :)

After my previous thread where I stated my reasons for returning my smart cover (hinge damage to the iPad etc). A lot of people said they had no issues, and a few said that they had applied some scotch tape to the side of the iPad so that the smart cover magnet and hinge do not make metal to metal contact.

Anyway when I spend money I AM OCD about keeping it like new and just cant accept that a smartcover, something thats meant to protect the iPad, can actually damage it. Thats not okay.

However I really like the smartcover and so I re-bought one (dark grey) and decided to use the scotch tape method on the magnet and hinge itself rather than a strip down the side of the iPad. The results are almost invisible and give peace of mind that no scratching will happen to the iPad itself.

Check out the results, I had to take these shots ridiculously close up for you to even be able to see the tape. Hardest part was cutting the tape to the right size but its worth it:

Magnet strength does not seem to be affected either :)

I think having a back skin makes you use the smart cover with peace of mind. That's what I did with the iPad 2 but not sure yet what I'm doing with the new iPad :p

I have a leather smart cover that I'm not using. Bought it on day one of the new iPad. It was originally the cream color but I dyed it black. Came out pretty good with the dye job but I found another combination smart cover/case so I will not being using this one. I'm willing to send it to anyone for the price of shipping.

How much for the shipping, and any pics?

Force of a magnet is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. The scotch tapes adds such an insignificant distance that the force isn't going to be measurably different. A case is quite a bit thicker.

To clarify the icarbons skin is not a case. I'd argue it's Marginalky thicker than scotch tape. For what it's worth I certainly noticed a difference I magnet strength from before applying the skin to afterwards.

I had a Smart Cover on my Ipad2 and it took off the paint where it attaches a little bit. I didn't notice, but the magnets had slowly begun to show on the Smart Cover until eventually it was magnet directly on the back of the Ipad. I routinely took off my Smart Cover and put it back on depending on what I'm doing and the protective coating over the magnets on the spline of the Smart Cover had worn through over time.

Very annoying.

Now I have an Ipad3 and purchased a Dark Grey cover for it. So far so good, but I'm thinking of putting some kind of protective layer between the Smart Cover and the body of my Ipad.

I understand blemishes not being an issue for most users, but like it or not, blemishes do hurt resell value down the road if you sell it. That is something important to me as I sold my Ipad2 for the Ipad3! :)

Hi, I've just purchased my first iPad (3rd generation) with a beautiful leather smart cover. In order to avoid any magnet-related damage to my iPad, I've purchased a piece of Scotch removable tape by 3M. At this point I have to decided where to place the tape: on the iPad or on the cover (as showed by Sir Ruben)?

This sort-of OCD can be related to a deep lack of self esteem, my interior psychologist tells me. A mark won't make your life any better/worse.

OCD is an anxiety spectrum disorder and has nothing to do with self-esteem.

Just another data point:

I had a leather Smart Cover for my iPad 2 which was removed and attached probably an average of a dozen times a day for the entire year I owned it. I'd check for marks every so often, and the only ones were smudges - easily removed with a damp microfiber cloth (or sometimes, just a bit of breath-fog and finger rubbing).

I have a 3rd gen iPad and a new cover that looks identical to the original design, though I wasn't able to view them side-by-side (sold it with the iPad 2 before I received the new cover).

Perhaps those who have had permanent marks use theirs in a harsher environment than I do, which is mostly at home. Also, it doesn't get carried much or put in and out of a bag.

What did you use the cut the tape with?

Just got a smart cover and was thinking of putting tape on it. To protect both the iPad and the smart cover. Not that some small wear and tear would bother me but I do want to sell the thing for a good price when the time is right.

So, what did you use to cut the tape with?
