i wasnt going to mess with downgrading and then having to jailbreak and take a chance of bricking it... but seeing how I have a 1.1.1, i am not too concerned and will probably jailbreak it as soon as I find software that I want to load

All iPhones of any firmware version, including out of box 1.1.2 can be jailbreaked. However, the value is having it sim-unlocked, which in your case will not be useful since you are on AT&T plan. Unless you plan on traveling.

So I went to at&t to pick up an iphone today. I havent cared anything about hacking the phone at all, and had already decided not to worry about jailbreaking one either. So rather than make an a$$ out of myself and ask the guy for an old version of a phone I just decided I didnt care what I got, as long as it was an iphone.

Well, i just got home and activated it only to see that itunes says it needs to be updated to 1.1.2!! HAHAHAHAHHA out of all the people to get a 1.1.1 OTB version!!! hahahahaha

Another Festivus Miracle! :D:D:D

as I have said several times in the thread now, I understand that. The humorous irony of the whole thing is that I, not caring anything about unlocking it, ended up with one by chance.

And I have said several times now that I understand that even the 1.1.2 can be jailbroken, however to some it wasnt worth the risk of something going wrong seeing how there was downgrading involved as well.. the more steps you invole into a "hack" or "software mod" the better chance you have of failure. The problem is, the failure when doing these kinds of software mods can lead to bticking the product. This is a chance that some people, including myself, wasnt willing to take the first day of owning his phone. However by taking more than half the steps out of the process it makes it more worth my while to software unlock it.

besides, when it is a 1.1.1 OTB there is only like 2 steps involved in jailbreaking isnt there? Dont you just go to jailbreak me and load the app installer then let it reboot?

Hate to say it, but thats so retarded.

Unlocking that is. Hacks, apps, yes I get that...it simple, software only bs type stuff...

Unlocking is a joke. What are you options? T-Mobile. THATS IT. Are they better than AT&T? NOT EVEN CLOSE.......

SO WHY UNLOCK.......

Oh....I know......people cannot get AT&T contracts can they...........I finally figured it out......

We'll, let's put things in perspective... let's look at the globe for instance. In addition to the US we have countries like China, Australia, New Zealand, India, etc. There are quite a number that aren't the US. That's a whole lotta people there, and none of them have an official iPhone. And when they do get one, they will no doubt be paying a lot more than the people in the US do. Importing one from the US for the purposes of using on their network is a real concern for them. So, unlocking the iPhone is of global interest.

Niiiice. Make sure you do something to beef up the brakes and maybe tweak the suspension!

If you have to state that something is "funny", it probably is not.

It's a little bit hard to add background laughter to a thread, otherwise he probably would have done so.

Oh wait.. 1.1.1.. now I get it. Oh, the irony! :D

I have AT&T. I've considered buying an iPhone. If I did, I would unlock it so I can use it with my current plan ($29.99 and no data plan) and so I'm not locked into another 2 years.

from what att told me, when you walk out of the store you have agreed to the contract... they ran my credit and everything in the store before I bouhgt my phone.... perhaps buying from the apple store is different though.

It's going to take a lot for the OP to recover from this thread. I give it two thumbs down in the funny department.

no biggie.... apparently when I describe something as being "ironic" i usually say something towards the effect of.. "you know whats funny?" or "the funny thing is" or something of that nature.... So seeing how thats the way I was raised up starting a conversation about something ironic I started this thread the same way.

The whole misunderstanding here lies in the way people talk apparently. Like I said, I have always said it a certain way. Perhaps the rest of the world starts off the conversation like... "you know what is ironic?". With that being said, it doesnt bother me that people are giving me hell about calling it funny, I said it the same way here I would have if I had been talking to someone in person. The only thing that does bug me is even after all the replies and all the excuses I have used to describe what I really meant, people are still not attempting to read between the lines. Everything has to be so literal. There is nothing fun about being on a forum that is so wrapped up in being literal on everything you say. If I were to say "my phone made me so angry I could have murdered someone!" I would hate to read the ramifications I would recieve from the other memebers on this board trying to talk me out of actually killing somone.

apparently A LOT of people are unable to put themselves into hypothetical situations these days.
