Remember a couple years ago when this whole "retina" thing didn't exist? It's not a huge deal... Enjoy your Mini for a year, works out to like $27/mo., then sell it back for >60% of what you paid and get the retina one, if they even come out with one.

But it does exist...and competitors offer it. The Nook HD is 240ppi led laminated.

This whole shut up and buy attitude is the reason why you don't have the option.
 
the problem is more so for people who have other retina screen devices they regularly use, and thus they have a constant point of comparison.

sorta like how my girlfriend is continually fascinated with how large her iphone 5 screen is, since she still regularly uses her iphone 4 as a second line... whereas I'm sure other folks have already gotten used to the longer iphone 5 screen and think nothing of it.

Every time I pick up iPhone 4 I marvel at the crispness of the text. But there is no option of a larger screen than iPhone and less weight than iPad 4. So iPad mini it is, pixelated and all.
