A A9 next year with the Air 3 . I bet the Pro won't be changed for two years as well. Remember Apple will never let their Pro model be outshined or equaled by any regular iPad.
I think it all comes down to how Apple wants to roll out Force Touch.

Despite what some people say, the Apple Pencil is NOT the same thing as Force Touch so if they want it to be ubiquitous (which it should be since it's an OS level feature) then they have to get an iPad Pro out next year. But if they are making it a phone only feature (which doesn't make sense) then they can skip a year.

Personally, I sold a lot of gear to get ready for an iPad Pro but the more I use 3D Touch the more I feel the iPad Pro is a placeholder until next year. And $1000 is too much to spend on a product that's ready to be replaced before it gets released.

This is the official geek bench site, if I may ask what score do you get on your 6S+? I'd be interesting with this whole new "two different A9 chips" if one is faster than the air 2 and one falls behind, enough that the overall score for the phones falls below the air 2.
A9 in Air 3 would be more powerful than A8X in CPU. Remember that iPad SoCs get slightly higher clock speeds, so the iPad version of the A9 would probably be around 5% faster in single and multicore scores. That being said, it would hardly be worthy update to existing A8X. 5% faster in CPU (multicore) and 15% faster in GPU would be a laughable upgrade.
IPad Air 3 will likely get an A9X from this year's iPad pro, or an A10. (2016 iPad pro will probably get an A10X)

It started with iPad Mini last year. Apple left it out. ... What do you people think?
There were rumors of the Air getting an update in early 2016.

The point of staggering would be to draw sales and attention to the new product. I wouldn't be shocked to see a staggered update cycle going on for 2 or 3 more years, if they do it this year. That way they maximize the Pro sales.

In time (by the next decade) I bet Apple switches the Pro into full-Mac mode as they encourage software makers to switch software to iOS (or make double OS software for a while). The Pro is a template for what is to come. The direction of the hardware is to attempt to make Apple autonomous again, instead of relying on Intel.

We shall see. I think they would have a boon, if Apple could make the Pro iPad expand outwards from the dock so it is a "common man's" desktop that can go portable. Either that or they need to stuff it with a TB SSD drive somehow.

I had the same thinking as you, while it would be clocked higher the upgrade wouldn't be worth it. Maybe a battery update? Switch to a dual core with slightly more power but less cores, increase battery life by 1-2 hrs while not sacrificing performance?

It's got nothing to do with it being a "Tablet Camera" there should, by default be a flash unit on any stills camera, there has been since the early days of photography.

If you actually think about it. Phones are carried more in the daytime, and tablets, are in general, though not 100% more indoor/home devices, often being used more in the evenings etc, hence generally tablets will be used in more low light areas as a whole. Low light = not good for camera and more noise/grain.

Also if you wish to use the camera as a kind of document capture device, again having extra illumination is good, the size of the tablet could also obscure more light too.

For the sake of $5 why not?
What are the advantages in NOT having a flash ? None.
Think also of how MASSIVE a tablet battery is compared to a phone, also, the physical space inside the device.

It's just silly to deliberately make a camera worse by not having a flash for the times someone may want one.

I'm firmly in the "don't take pictures with your tablet" camp.

I think A9X is more likely. (Clocked slightly lower than in iPad pro). So roughly 1.5x-1.6x more powerful in CPU and 1.8x-1.9x in GPU compared to A8X.

And that's fine :)

I might not like LARGE American gas guzzling cars, but, just because I may not like them, or approve does not give me any right to say I don't think others should own or enjoy them.

Remember, it's hard to get things into Apple devices unless you are fully embraced with the whole Apple way of working, so in business it's very handy to take photo's of items or documents directly with the tablet without needing to call up other devices and trying to transfer images over.

There is more to a camera on a tablet than holding it up as a camera at a music venue.

IMHO iPad Pro should have been a totally different animal than the iPad. Not a big iPad with a faster processor. Maybe they should have been thinking about releasing a new device built specifically for those who decided to do work with a touch screen. Air should have been the flagship iPad.

There were rumors of the Air getting an update in early 2016.

If Apple does this I will be very angry. I have been waiting a full year not to upgrade, only to realise they did 0 upgrade. Not 1 mhz speed bump or even Apple Pencil support. I bit the bullet and bought an Air 2 that I paid for $600+ for.

Suspect there is an element of power/cooling on the A9X that makes it (currently) not suitable for an Air 3 - either heat or battery life. They won't want to use the A9 as they'll have to drop cores over the A8X.

The Mini 3 update was weak to create a performance gap between the Air 2 and the Mini 3. Suspect the cheaper Mini 2 took sales from the Air the year before.

The rumor mills suggest that the iPad Air 3 will come with an improved 4K screen
resolution of 2334 x 3112 pixels with a pixel density of 401 PPI.

THIS IS A BAD IDEA!

Although Higher res display may sound good on paper but in reality will people probably won't tell the difference. Above a certain level, there are serious diminishing returns on PPI.

But this higher resolution will seriously affect the legendary fluidity and and battery life of iPad (Remember iPad 3.) And so the processor speed bump won't really matter. Because high resolution display will hog down the performance and battery life and the overall experience from gaming and productivity. So, if the rumor is true, I'll be quite disappointed.

If they released a new Air then it would just include all the Pro's new features and cannibalize it a bit.

I don't understand the objection to taking photos with tablets. It's got a camera and a really big viewfinder. Works well as a camera doesn't it?

I thought it was ridiculous and stupid when people were taking photos with their .7 megapixel iPad 2, now I don't mind it at all, isn't as good as a phone but it's pretty damn great if you don't have one on you.

This, and it makes it easier to directly edit the photos or videos on an app like imovie or Vee without first having to airdrop the footage from your iPhone. Its longer battery life also lets it last longer before having to recharge.

No normal person upgrades a $500 to $700 tablet every year so this makes sense.

Plus they had the perfect excuse not to this year because of the iPad Pro. Try to get those that want the iPad Air 3 interested in the Pro instead.

I bought an iPad Air 2. They could have at least quietly fixed the audio. The sound is like someone singing in a cave

It's ok.

We have to accept that many people just automatically don't like things they are not used to.
In addition, and also unfortunately we have a rather too large group of people who won't like something because it's not done by Apple, but then flip views when Apple finally do it.

Camera's used to be GIANT things on wooden tripods. I don't suppose people said how WRONG they were.
Due to advances in film, the gradually got smaller and smaller (note that every since the very 1st days, even the big wooden ones, thru to this day all cameras had flash unit's on them, or hotshoes for fitting a flash unit.)

I just mention that, as we will get the typical person here who says iPads should, unlike any other camera, not have a flash - because apple does not fit one naturally.

People started putting camera's on phones and there were those who said how stupid that was at the time.
As you see, some people just hate change and innovation and will put down new things.
And as I said, unfortunately/sadly also put down things that are made by any company their don't personally support.

I love advancements in technology and giving people options and features to use that they never had access to before.
Also I accept that what I want is not the same as what others want, but I look at it from a positive as opposed to a negative viewpoint.

I may not want music playback as I don't listen to music, but I would agree the device should be able to do it, as, even if I don't want that feature now, there will be others that do want the feature.

Sadly we have too many on these forums that thing the opposite. THEY don't have any need for something, so they feel this feature should not be allowed for anyone else either.

I find this sad :(

I think its because people hold it up at the school play and block people from watching he show, like the guy in the movie theatre wearing a big hat lol, inconsiderate people do inconsiderate things.

Indeed I know that's one reason these people are anti tablet camera's.
I don't understand their logic though, as that would be like me saying no one should be allowed to have a BIG car with a BIG engine as some of those people are inconsiderate take up parking spaces too much and drive too fast.

Ignoring the fact that most people with large cars are probably very nice considerate people who don't race everywhere and park badly.

I don't agree with punishing the majority by withholding something, just because a small percentage use something badly.

Exactly.

This, dare I say, has been Apple's problem. their lack of idea's/innovation.

Ever since the launch of the iPad1 many years ago, all they have REALLY done is:

1: Fit a ok'ish, but never great camera, without a flash into the back of the device.
2: Made it faster.
3: Made it thinner and lighter
4: Offer it in 3 colours.

That's pretty much the extent to Apple's imagination over the past 5? years.

And they wonder why people are not upgrading to the latest model every time?

FINALLY with the iPad Pro they have actually REALLY done something.
Albeit, they still can't get past the habit of the ok-ish camera with no flash on the rear, when for literally just a few dollars they could have put an iPhone 5 or 6 camera and flash unit into the device and eliminated this one weak spot.

Everything here. The new iPads don't add functionality. The retina display was worth doing but that should have been there earlier (the manufacturing of the screen and necessary components (battery, processor, etc to support) maybe did not allow for iPad 2 to have it) but all the upgrades they tout are just minor updates.

I think even the Pro is still not too different. When I bought iPad 3 I was hoping to use it to replace pen and paper as well as half the mac usage. I have used the iPad 3 sparingly until I found good quality pdfs for medical school.

The Pro will do things I expected the iPad 3 to be able to do. But I'd have to pay thousands to do so. Bit disappointed with the tablet space to be honest. I don't watch netflix or play games on the iPad. The iPhone 6 plus does a lot for me. The iPad besides reading PDFs, doesn't allow me to do a whole lot.

Lack of inovation.
Wow, what does that even mean?
I dont understand how people expect Apple to create a new device every year. Steve Jobs was brilliant in seeing what a phone could achieve when connected to the internet. Most everything else (with the exception of Mac's) is an expantion of the iPhone. iPads and watches are a different form factor, but the same type of device.
I love the iPad Mini form factor. It suits me, but it is just an easier sized device to view what my iPhone has received.
You people wanting inovation, please be more specific. Is innovating adding another gig of ram, creating a new type of communicator?
