I'm kinda thinking out loud here but doesn't Apple already have a good idea of what I have in my library since "Genius" has been turned on ever since it was made available? I know for a fact that when I visit the iTunes Store not all the music that is suggested for me about the middle of the page is related to music I bought from iTunes. Some actually came from a service called Emusic or something like that on a promo free month of unlimited downloading. I don't really think they care if it came from CD's LP's Napster or Limewire. They get their 25 bucks a year and we get to hear our music. The big thing I am hoping for is the music from my LP's will be redowloaded without the pops and scratches 🙂

As far as I know, piracy =/= theft. since you are not depriving the original owner of the content. If I borrow a cd from someone and rip it to my computer and give it back, they still have their cd, I just have it too.

I wasn't saying it's not a crime, just that's it's not theft, the same way larceny is not theft.

Its actually not a crime to share a cd with friends and family unless u take money from them. At least over here.

They know exactly what they're doing. It's an amazing step forward for the music industry. They seemed to be stuck in time and then all of a sudden they're agreeing to give pirates good quality files in return for a fee. This isn't a sting. Beyond being technically impossible to tell if your mp3s weren't purchased it would also be a violation of the ITunes user agreement and probably a bunch of local laws.

Although, I admit, the paranoia people are exhibiting is somewhat entertaining.

Don't get ahead of yourself. You can pirate lossless files, but can't buy lossless files from iTunes. To me, that would be the main reason to pirate - better quality than iTunes, and a lot more convenient that driving down to a local store and buying a few CDs. Cash flow isn't really a problem for me, but time is.

Potential revenue != Actual revenue. Most people I know would not have bothered buying a product if pirating it was impossible. In those cases, the content creator lost no money.

Then you also have to consider that there are a lot of people who use piracy as a "try before you buy" type of thing. Especially for video games - a lot of my friends will try it, and if they like it, they all go out and buy the real thing so they can play it online. In those cases the company actually realizes a little more profit simply because they would not have otherwise bought the game.

I'm not sure what everyone's problem is. Even if he did download songs immediately, people can't just answer the question.. oh no, they have to get on their high horse and try to criticize. Who cares if this guy "seems credible" it was a credible concern. MacRumors certainly wins the award for saddest posters. Get real people.

Seriously was about to post this...everyone wants to be some special ****ing snow flake by being objective but then they do it with every post, thread and article and they just look like arrogant *******s who don't know how ignorant they are...I could have asked the same question and yes I torrent like a broken sink on full blast but I also have an entire wall 9 feet tall of CD's that have been ripped along with DVD's, etc. Jesus H Christ...

@terraphantm, Agreed. I like lossless about 1000x better but iTunes waters down everything which is fine, but they give no option for lossless formats of any kind.
