It's got zero to do with showing off to others. It's about being able to read PDFs without zooming in, have plenty of room for two full phone-size apps to be open side-by-side, and have it all be the size that when closed the outside screen is an amazing phone all by itself and still thinner than a flagship iPhone.
What is the battery like with this amazingly thin phone? What is the durability? You now know the cost…. Foldables are still in their infancy in my opinion. Apple has always been about trying to perfect, at least mostly, what they release. Not releasing something to use us to perfect it. I find nothing wrong with apples timing. Kudos for not succumbing to the pressure and releasing something early.

If I got irritated with apple it would be the delay in AirPod max update. Or the lack of a home hub with a screen.

I'm enjoying this 'conversation', but my heart lies with other's stated desire for another mini. I think this is the point of market economies, you meet the desires(within financial and technical bounds) of some group - one in which net economic profits are positive - other products meet the other group's desires within financial and technical bounds.

They didn’t do this with the Vision Pro though.

They could have released a “iPhone pro fold” in a similar fashion to the Vision Pro as a niche item, but they didn’t.
But that ignores the possibility that it was hardware issues behind not releasing a foldable phone.
There were no technical issues preventing a Vision Pro release.

Apple: Solving problems from 5-10 years ago .. today!
That's okay, :)

I tend to be behind a few iPhone models (my primary iPhone at the moment is the 11 Pro Max) and about 14-15 years behind in Macs (current primary Mac is a 2009 MacPro). So…Apple is now solving MY problems. :D

If the rumors are true about Apple's foldable and Samsung's Fold 8, they will put every other foldable phone to shame including the Fold 7. That is if they utilize a crease-less design / assembly on the inner screen.

I think anyone being objective has to admit that, for now, Samsung has something more interesting* than anything Apple offers in this space.

Who knows how it may go in the future, but I really applaud Samsung staying committed here and iterating it into a better and better product.

* interesting ≠ preferable for everyone

It's no less durable than any normal phone if you don't abuse it. I still have my Fold4 from years ago which is working perfectly fine. Battery life is on par with the Pro iPhone.

Apple and perfect? Did you forget bendgate? Antenna gate? Touch Disease? The Airpods Whistling issue? The bright pixels issue affecting the 1st gen iPad Pro?

Let's not pretend whatever Apple touches turns into gold and Samsung is a beta product because the facts speak otherwise.

I can virtually guarantee Apple's foldable next year will have another gate attached to it.

Iphone user since 3g comenting on my new z fold 7. This hardware is beyond anything i have purchase from apple in the last decade. It will make u a foldable believer and so much lighter and easier in one hand use than a 16 pro max. Still struggling with Android tho 😪 and might be the reason i return it. If apple dont announce a competitor next year I will be officially out.

Give it some time like I did years ago. You will wonder how you ever lived without Android

Yep planning to wait till the last day of my return window to decide. I do feel that somethings are quicker in my iphone and take extra steps/clicks in this one. Also the face unlock is a joke

If you use Goodlock and the several modules in it, there is so much customization available that there's virtually nothing the iPhone is quicker at.

I dislike face unlock. I use the finger print sensor. The phone is unlocked out of my pocket even before I look at it

Not everyone wants a foldable.
And? Its not like anyone is asking apple to REPLACE the iPhone with an foldable phone, just to add this option for those who want it
So this statement is futile and people should stop copying it, Apple is a mobile company and they should start to add something a little bit different

I've seen foldable phones and they just seemed like a gimmick. Last night I had dinner with a friend who had the new Galaxy Z Fold 7.

I own every product in the Apple store and this was the first thing I've seen that made me want to ditch my iPhone. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Folded it was thinner than my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Videos on the open screen were breathtaking, and there was no hint of a seam down the middle. And this this is so thin when opened you just can't believe it.

I haven't been to MacRumors in awhile, so I went and looked and they peg an Apple foldable phone for fall of NEXT YEAR.

What in the world is going on at Apple? They have all the cash in the world, all the top people, and they just can't do this stuff?

Honestly, this phone made my iPhone look like a Gen 1 product. If you haven't held one, you will first be amazed at the phone itself, but as that wears off you will just get madder and madder thinking about how Apple missed this. It's like the company has been asleep for five plus years.
It's coming next year. I think you can wait 13 more months mate.

What hardware issues? Foldables have been around for several years already without any "hardware issues". The recent Galaxy Fold has no bend or sand issues so far (per the video I posted)

But as a tablet? It’s 4.2mm thin. And even closed it is lighter and more narrow. Makes the Pro Max feel like a brick.

The thickness of the Fold while open as compared to the thickness of the Pro Max is not what OP said, and what I was referring to was their statement.

If I wanted to discuss different specs like "the Fold's frame is aluminum while the Pro Max's is titanium," "the Fold has a smaller battery that charges slower," or "the iPhone is better sealed against dust and water," sure I could have. If I wanted to talk about unrelated things. But I didn't because the OP mentioned something factually incorrect and that's what my reply is about.

And I was noting that the perceived thinness is there because it is more narrow. It feels smaller than a Pro Max despite having a couple more mm on paper.

My days of owning a slab phone are over. Unless it's an emergency (and I desperately need a phone for the time being), I won't ever own another one again.

Foldable phones have issues with creases in the screen, and there were mechanical issues with the hinges being a weak point.
Yes, the latest Samsung apparently resolved these.
So maybe Apple was waiting for tech to allow them to deliver a foldable that didn’t have those issues.

The angst for a foldable is also futile. If you want a foldable, there are foldables currently on the market. If you want an Apple foldable then you're just going to have to wait.

I have plenty of stuff I am waiting on Apple to do, same as others. I may post my opinion, but I'm not starting new threads over it.

It is what it is until Apple changes it.

The only thing I want from Apple is for them to change the Liquid Glass back to what it was before.

That's ok.

It takes time to Think Different(tm)... from Apple marketing ages ago They swiped the whole Think marketing from 1970's IBM stuff I swear!

I still use M-series and Intel Mac's daily- just not their mobile phones.

Android has much to offer that takes a while to learn how to navigate. No better or worse in that regard. Cheers to a new and different adventure!

Not to mention the brilliant Oppo Find N5
