PS. AppleCare + is worthwhile. $50 gets you a new phone for loss or damage. Also if you used Amex for the purchase.

AppleCare+ does not cover loss or theft and the deductible is now $79, thanks to people who deliberately damage their iPhones when they feel like a replacement and think nothing of it.

The OP is covered by Amex, however.

Amex only covers theft or loss for 90 days after purchase date.

Well that sucks, but thanks for mentioning it - I hadn't realized it changed.

The jury is out on AMEX coverage. We are within the 90 day window but they only cover the $199 purchase price, not replacement value. Though that helps.

But they are "reviewing" the claim since they don't cover items taken "from, in, or on a vehicle." They said the adjuster might consider an airplane a vehicle. If they do we will have some unfortunate discussions with them.... This was not a smash-and-grab.

It happens

Guys, easy with you life lessons and all that stuff, I think the op is a great dad and cut his daughter some unnecessary slack, and like he said, if it doesn't show up a used 4s might be a good alternative until next upgrade.

Even for those who obsessively check their items, it could happen, and yo either stress about it and ruin your vacation or move on.

Yeah it does stink. Applecare+ never covered loss or theft - you always had to bring the item in. But the increase in deductible just makes it not worth it for me. An "out of warranty" swap at apple is $249-299 or something and covers almost anything. So risk $99 to save $70 if you need to use it? Nah.

Still a good deal on iPads though. They are more expensive to swap and have the lower deductible still.

Still worth it for me...I've got teenagers.

Makes sense that they'll only reimburse you the price you paid plus any applicable tax, but do you/your daughter know for sure it actually fell out inside the airplane? What if it fell out while walking the boarding bridge or even within the terminal?

So my daughter left her iPhone on a plane last night....

Thanks for the correction, but AMEX does not cover a loss (only theft or damage)....unless you have a Platinum AMEX card

It's covered as a loss? You have a platinum card? My homeowners covers full replacement, not just purchase price. The premium price was reduced to $20 a year Includes a loss/damage/theft. Had a broken MacBook screen from dropping. Fully covered screen replacement.

I still vouch for AppleCare since things happen besides breakage. Like a home button that gives out at year 1.5. Or a microphone or dust behind the lens. I received replacement with each case.

Another good question for the OP. How do we know it wasn't stolen from her open top bag?

Amex will also mirror the original 1 year warranty in the 2nd year through Purchase Protection. The sleep/wake button got stuck on my wife's 4S. Paid $199 plus tax for the out-of-warranty replacement and Amex reimbursed me $299 plus tax so we actually came out ahead.

Well that works! Good for you. Is there a limit of events per year? I thought Purchase Protection is only 90 days?

EDIT: AMEX doubles the warranty, but Purchase Protection covers for theft or damage only for 90 days after purchase. So AppleCare gives you the damage/breakage protection for 2 years that AMEX does not.

But still with AppleCare my warranty exchange took 5 minutes without any paperwork or dealing with a credit card company. It's mainly for the second year since Apple covers year one free. The house rider is so cheap and it covers all my computers and phones too. Regardless I purchase my iPhones with AMEX Gold, but I didn't realize it does not cover a loss, meaning I left it somewhere as opposed to being stolen.

This is correct. No paperwork is required when filing a claim with Amex; it's just a phone call away and you go ahead and replace your OOW iPhone for $199/$269 and you'll get reimbursed the $199/299/399 plus tax you paid.

Actually that is very possible. She sat the bag down at baggage claim and only later noticed it was missing.

I will definitely argue the point with them if they try to tell me an airplane is a vehicle (which is clearly meant to refer to a car/truck/van)

And make the argument that we still don't know if it's stolen either, considering how easy it is to steal from an open top bag and you haven't heard a word about the missing/stolen/lost iPhone.

2 weeks ago again phone was left on bench at turks and Caicos airport bench. We boarded plane to Miami. And they were kind enough to announce on over head speaker did someone leave iPhone. I immediately thought of my wife who didn't realize her phone was missing from her handbag. I told flight attendant if its pink iPhone case. She said yes.
Lol :D

Only thing I got from this thread is some people just insist on having the last word. Get used to it they can't deal with not having the final word. Sorry for your loss OP.

Any luck OP? Has the phone showed up anywhere on find my phone?

My daughter had her phone stolen today on the bus out of her backpack and I was able to locate it and report it to the cops, when they got to my house I emailed the officer a screen shot if the location and they went over and the thief handed it over. Had it back in a couple of hours of being stolen. It was pass coded and set up with find my iphone. Hopefully it can be located and returned to you. Good luck!

Nope. No luck. It hasn't been live on a network since she lost it. Southwest says they don't have it "but we will keep looking hard for your item."

Maybe?

Hopefully it turns up.

Maybe Apple should add a timer to Airplane Mode so that after a few hours, the iPhone would automatically turn off Airplane Mode and check for a Find my iPhone Requests.

That's the biggest flaw of Find my iPhone. It needs an active internet connection to work. Thieves just need to turn off the phone or put it in airplane mode to defeat it. Even if the phone is pass code locked, they could just pull out the SIM or remove the battery and you are screwed.

Nope, either they saw in first couple of days or it's gone.

Well that is my thought too. However I have heard several people say they got theirs back after weeks. Perhaps they are slow to process requests and items sometimes. Still, I agree, it is almost certainly gone. I don't know why though. It is so senseless to take it and not turn it in.

Very true. Still AMEX's "protection company" TWG denied my claim initially saying it was because it was taken from a vehicle. I complained that it could have been at the air on the way to baggage claim or at the hotel lobby. So with that excuse removed they declined it saying it was "lost" not "stolen" because I didn't file a police report. Seriously. He accused me of trying to "game the system."

As you can imagine I was very upset about that and called AMEX directly again and raised some heck. They quickly apologized and credited my account $199 - the cost of the phone.

I have a non-contract tablet on my mobile share plan. I wonder if I can put it on a contract and use it's upgrade to buy a 32gb 5c???

Hmmm

I'm still holding out hope someone is going to turn it in
