So, are there any major differences?

Major differences between the displays? That's subjective but I would say no. If you calibrate the display then the differences are very hard to see. And personally I think anyone complaining about a display that isn't calibrated shouldn't be complaining. No display looks it's best unless calibrated and it's not possible for Apple to do this, the individual unit variations would make it cost prohibitive to do this.

What I'm really asking is if there is a difference in quality or if it's essentially just a bunch of people's opinions on the internet and in reality neither display is better or worse than the other.

I don't know the exact display specs for each, but I've never seen a display that you could determine the better based solely on specs. How a display looks is very subjective. Perfect color balance to one person is too red to another. Good contrast to one person is unrealistic cartoon like colors to another. There are individual variations, some displays have too much backlight bleed for example. The 9c84 seems to generally be more blue than the 9c85. But issues like this are resolved with correct color calibration.

What did you expect? this isnt the magic internet 8ball. There is no magic answers to convince you. Obviously you just posted to argue, b/c it seems to me like your mind is made up anyway. Take it in and try to exchange, see what they say, and see if they do you any favors in the future.

Why does everyone in this thread avoid answering the question? I am asking if there is or is not a quality difference. No one has answered affirmative or negative. If there is really no difference I don't care.

Well, there have been many responses and everyone is saying NO very, very, very clearly:

If you're seriously contemplating returning the computer because of that, I think you're an idiot. 9C84 screen here and it's absolutely wonderful.

Discuss? Is the screen fine? Keep it and calm the hell down. Seriously, no matter the model # if the screen is fine then stop worrying about it.

Some people here have some serious psychological issues...

OP will be wasting people's time, effort and money by returning a faultless computer on the basis that he doesn't like the screen model. Discuss.

... but seriously, don't worry about who made the screen if it's working well. Just check it for defects, and if it looks good - be happy, since others haven't been as lucky.

It's quite clear many people used sarcasm to say there was no difference in screen quality, but you really missed that.

To answer your question, in my opinion, no!

You have to determine what the perceived difference in quality means to you. Is it raw specs? How do you want us to measure this for you? You'll have to make your own call here. Some folks will say one is better than the other. Other folks will say the other one is better. Who ya gonna believe? You can drive yourself crazy with this stuff. The only question I can see mattering here is one only you can answer; Does the screen/display work for you? Any bad pixels? Any light bleeding? We can't answer this for you. If you don't like it because it's made by manufacturer B instead of manufacturer A, then take it back and see what they (Apple) say. If they are willing to exchange with you, you'll have to open the box first, turn it on, go to system profile and check out the display model first, or you might wind up right back where you started... somehow, I don't think this is an option a buyer can specify... they're not custom made, last time I checked.

Listen - you have to be a little proactive if you want to get your answers. Thus far, almost every post has mentioned that there would be no real difference between the two screens. In my last post, I specifically mentioned that if you want to see comparisons between the 9C85 and 9C84 screens to MRgoogle the thread with the same title. There a fellow MR member thoroughly detailed the difference.

Clearly you were too lazy to do this and/or you wanted the information spoon-fed to you. I guess the only response that will make you happy is this:

That's your definitive answer. Best of luck.

Oh by the way - best of luck trying to get it replaced in store. I don't think that will happen since you have a CTO model.

Is it just me or is the only difference between the two in that "comparison" is that one is calibrated more yellow and the other is calibrated more blue? Wouldn't they both look the same after adjustment? He seems to not have calibrated either screen with any sort of professional tool so I would hardly call that post scientific.

Well if thats the way you feel then I guess there is your answer to the difference between the two screens.
