Looking at the new base 13" MBP for my daughter. Other than a new keyboard, it's still the same as 2019? 8th Gen intel CPU & graphics? So my 1699 (canadian $). I need to shell out $700 more for the 10th gen processor? Damn.

That seems like exactly the case. Same configs for the base 13", though you get the benefit of double the SSD storage now with 256GB. The 13" MacBook Air base makes a good value purchase too at this point in time. Better/as good graphics, faster LPDDR4X RAM, albeit slower processor.

if you're really about getting a 13" consider if she'll care about the keyboard or not. If not, buy a 13" refurb for dirt cheap or just get her a new MBA. Canadian apple refurb store has some really great deals right now.

so if you return a 2019 macbook pro for faulty butterfly keyboard they will replace it with magic keyboard?

Buy an Air instead.

In terms of everyday performance for basic tasks like word, web browsing, YouTube videos, the performance between an i5 air vs the new base model pro won’t be very different then right?

If this is the case, might be a good idea to get the Air. I got an air with 16gb ram, i5 processor and 256gb and it’s the same price as the new base model pro.

It's a grad gift - she's off to university in the fall, and the MBP was her request.

If she prefers a pro over the air, then she knows what she wants. Disregard what i suggested!

yeah if you will never be doing any photo video editing the 2020 air is better with the pricing

The MBA is a better product right now for the price and if she's not doing anything intensive. But if you know your daughter and she cares more about the name/model then go ahead and get a refurb MBP, those still make people happy. Likely she won't care about the keyboard if it's for basic usage. Some even prefer. 10th gen intel chip means literally nothing to your daughter in this situation. Older models look exactly the same as the new model minus kb so if the "status" of macs is a consideration she won't be disappointed either.

New keyboard plus double storage at each price tier. Better than nothing at all, but not much more... They could at least have used the same i5/i7 as the Air, but with proper cooling to eke out a bit more performance. As it is it feels artificially limited against the higher model which goes against all the really good moves Apple's made with their other computers since the 16" 😕

The Macbook Air i5 with 256GB storage and 16GM Ram is $1,299. The MacBook Pro i5 with 256G storage and 16G ram is $1,399. Isn’t the MacBook Pro the better buy for the extra $100?

Does generation of processor matter much in these comparisons? Trying to determine what to buy myself as well.

I honestly don’t know. I think upgrading ram on the air is a lot more expensive than the pro. I guess the portability is there with the air but it’s not very significant.

The jump from 8GB to 16GB is $200 for the Air but only $100 for the Pro. If you spec up to 16GB on the Air, configurations start to price similar to the Pro at 16GB.

I think the MacBook Air is still the better deal. But if you're planning to take the MacBook Air with the quad-core i5 and upgrade to 16GB RAM, the price difference is only $100 compared to a MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM. In that case, you're comparing two laptops which are very similar and both very good, both having pros and cons. Difficult to give an advice.

Don't get the MacBook Air 2020. Especially not the i5.

I don't think people here realize how bad the i5 2020 is.

Get your daughter a Pro 13". She knows what she wants.

When I got the 2020 i5, it was... let's just say sub-par, to put it mildly. It was hotter, louder, and still slower than my 2018 13" Pro. The difference wasn't subtle at all. The 13" Pro somehow managed to run cooler, quieter, and much faster.
