The Macbook Air i5 with 256GB storage and 16GM Ram is $1,299. The MacBook Pro i5 with 256G storage and 16G ram is $1,399. Isn’t the MacBook Pro the better buy for the extra $100?

The one with the the 10th gen, Ice Lake processors is going to be the best value. If the MBA i3's and i5's are 10nm 10th gen (and I don't know that they are), I would buy that over the new lower end MBP.

Do the base configurations not have 10th-gen processors simply because Apple cheap'd out, or was there a technical reason / lack of comparable processor SKU explanation behind that decision?

The air is a horrible purchase, it only has 10watts of available power till it throttles....

Basically spotify makes it get to 90-100c, not a unit thats going to last.

The pro is still better, 2017 onward.

Depends on the use-case. The MBA is much more portable, longer battery life, some people prefer the wedge shape for use on laps, and the no touch bar is appealing too.

The MBA is a better product right now for the price and if she's not doing anything intensive. But if you know your daughter and she cares more about the name/model then go ahead and get a refurb MBP, those still make people happy. Likely she won't care about the keyboard if it's for basic usage. Some even prefer. 10th gen intel chip means literally nothing to your daughter in this situation. Older models look exactly the same as the new model minus kb so if the "status" of macs is a consideration she won't be disappointed either.
Going to go ahead and disagree with you massively. "Light usage" usually refers to CPU demanding and other intensive tasks - such as light room, PhotoShop, compiling, etc. Going to university , regardless of what you are doing, will be making use of the keyboard. The poll recently that showed butterfly vs scissor style keyboard showed something like 99% preferred the scissor/magic keyboard. So to say "likely she won't care about the keyboard if for basic usage" is really not understanding and a mischaracterisation of how important a keyboard is to typing out a document, creating content, general usage day-to-day. This is before you even look at the failure rates of the butterfly keyboard.
My opinion of course but I would highly recommend the op do a bit of research on the keyboard differences.

Have a MBA 2020. It doesn't run hot at all for the light-usage it is designed for, including running Spotify, content creation, streaming videos. Unless you have one, you are just regurgitating mis-information from the tubez mate. Unless you have one, you're just lying. Source: MBA 2020, MBP 2017, MB12. Test script: MBA 2020 - Partner is currently running Spotify and creating a presentation on her lap and it's neither hot nor is the fan perceivable 'on' >

Oh no Apple Cheeped out. There's 15 watt versions of the Ice Lake CPU found in the MBA that would've made a nice performance boost and straddled the gap between the 28 watt MBP CPU's. The MBP 13 chassis could've handled the power load too...

How disappointing. The Ice Lake have better GPU too don't they?

Yes, Here's a link to a 15 watt Ice Lake i5 that could've been used by the 2 port MBP.
i5-1035G7
The core speed is lower than the 8th gen CPU, but the better performance per clock should make up the difference. The better GPU is also a win

Why did they use the older 8th gen - cost saving?
Seems like they've split the MacBook 13" line and made the whole thing a bit of a mess

I got the 2020 MBA with an i7 and the CPU would hit over 90C just watching YouTube videos and the bottom would be noticeably hot. Returned it and got a 16" MBP- much cooler under the same workloads. The new 13" seems like it's the best of both worlds.

Interesting! What was the browser? Chrome seems to be a bit of a problem here. I try and avoid it where possible. Did you get an i7 to watch youTube videos? When you say 'noticeably hot' - what kind of temperature did you record? Not saying your wrong I just haven't found that and stream in HD constantly.
The MacBook Pro and MacBook air are completely different devices so it seems odd that your requirements would fit both devices!
Like the Toyota Corolla and Toyota LandCruiser. Similar names - very different use cases :apple:

You have a biased position to begin with, there is zero debate about thermals in this unit. The CPU its using and the thermal joke of a heatsink without a heatpipe follows the laws of thermal dynamics. The 2020 MBA is thermally flawed and the money should be spent on a MBP 13" that you can turbostop and underclock to get better battery life vs the MBA. The unit by design is designed to throttle heavily due to the 1/8" painted aluminum heatsink, this heatsink is hardly acceptable for any modern cpu.

It's a grad gift - she's off to university in the fall, and the MBP was her request.

wow, haven't posted here in awhile. my signature is a little dated.

I was in the same boat. Daughter graduating in June. Had just ordered the Air, then 5 minutes later, they announced the new MBP for order. I cancelled the Air and ordered The $1799 ($1699 education) model. I was concerned about the heat issues of the Air. Also, I’m wanting to make sure this will last her no matter what direction she goes in college, and what tasks may pop up. For me, it was worth the extra money for the investment. She’s coming from a late-2013 MBP. This should be a nice upgrade!

Good choice, the 10th gen with the upgraded RAM at 16gb means she'll be good for at 5-7 years easily

I recommend not buying it until the annual back to school sale. Then you can get her a free pair of bluetooth headphones as well.

Here's a helpful video. For what it's worth, she wouldn't notice a difference at all in basic usage between an Air and the entry level MBP.

Also, dont waste money on 16gigs of ram. It's a total waste of time unless she's doing incredibly intensive work.

Of course we are all biased - look at the website URL!
There is plenty debate about thermals.
What I can say is that I have actual experience with the 2020 MBA and it functions absolutely fine. I could have returned it within 3 weeks, but after using it, it is perfectly suited to my requirements (good battery life, responsive, quiet) What actual experience have you had with it? I also have a MBP, and a MacBook 12. I think people watch a youtube video and then think they are better thermal dynamic experts than Apple engineers! I mean for one the y-series processor is a fanless design.
What you are suggesting is software-throttling as a solution to a physically larger, and heavier device. Not sure that's a better solution than just buying the right device for your requirements. Good luck with your next purchasing decision - I hope you get something that meets your needs. Just like other people do! ✌ 🖐

Apple has done this in the past. In 2018 they updated the “high end” 13” Pro with an 8th generation quad-core processor, but did not update the base 13” Pro, leaving it with a dual core 7th generation processor.

Apple’s move suggests the 2020 update was a stopgap intended primarily to get the new keyboard out to the market. Perhaps they are contemplating a more radical redesign as part of the ARM transition we’ve been hearing about, or the 14” model that may come later this year or next year.

You probably are 100% rightr - They tend to not do this usually however - so they must have been keen to get rid of the butterfly keyboard!
Although I am probably going to buy anyway - I dislike the 15" size-wise and of course the butterfly keyboard on this 2018... 🤬
