If you are going for the 13", consider the MBA or consider waiting to see if they upgrade the screen resolution to 1440x900.

If you are going for 15" or 17" MBP, I don't see any major reason to wait, unless you can hold out all the way until ~summer for Apple to POSSIBLY incorporate Sandy Bridge Intel CPUs.

argh, this is frustrating!
i knew i'd miss out on the new proc, but i was hoping for at least a speed boost..
i'll be back in the us this winter, and have already arranged to sell my "last year's model" mbp... i plan on getting the i7 15in.
so guys, is it worth it to just deal with my ****** netbook till the new models come out, and then try to figure out some way to get them over here?
what is the new model (feb 2011) supposed to do that the current i7's don't do?

buybuybuy

Just go ahead and buy it. Next mac event might first be when they release lion (next summer)

Maybe there will be a update soon.
Buyers guide says there are only about 2~3 weeks to go, but it definitely will be longer than that - which is about 4~6 weeks. Maybe this Nov or Dec.
You'd better wait.

ya this is what i'm thinking, apple is sneaky about this, and the mbp line is due for a speed bump before retirement.
either way i can wait until end of nov/beg of dec before i order...

The good old waiting game :p

Who knows when the new MBP will come, who says it will be early 2011?

This year, Sony and Asus already had i7 Arrendale's in January. Apple came with their i7 MBP many months later.

Now that OS X Lion is planned in the summer of 2011, I think you're going to have to wait a while. Apple will be late as usual with the new Intel CPU and I'd say it will be released together with Lion probably.

So if you can wait till the summer of 2011, then wait.

I was all set to buy my first Mac, that being a MacbookPro (basic 13 inch), however today has just shown that next summer if I get one now then my MBP would probs have a new OS, and even a new look (the air type Slope) and maybe even flash memory. Who is to say that a MBP now will be fast enough to run a Lion update?

I know trying to keep up to date with tech is a fools game, however when I know that so much better is around the corner I just can't help but feel that if I buy now I really will feel ripped off.

Are you qualified to be on the internet?

They would not release something that close to christmas, and anyway, the buyers guide is just telling you the average time between updates, and that time is usually a little short because around the intel transition there where some very short update cycles to get everything to where they wanted it which has thrown off the average time.

I'm in the same boat as a lot of you. Buy now or wait?

I seriously doubt we're going to get any serious changes to the current Pro lineup until the release of lion. If Apple wanted to cash in on holiday season buying, I'm guessing they would have made the push by now. Let's face it, this Christmas, they'll be pimping out the MacAir.

Sandy Bridge chips are expected to go on sale late this year, making it likely that they'll find their way into Macs by early 2011.

"I am more excited by Sandy Bridge than I have been in any product that the company has launched in a number of years," Otellini said. "Due to the very strong reception of Sandy Bridge, we have accelerated our 32-nanometer factory ramp and have raised our capex guidance to enable us to meet the anticipated demand."

early 2011 = late Jan/ early Feb

I am studying in the VS right now. I will be here till January 4th, and then head back to Europe. The price of a MBP is the same as here but then in Euro's, so 40% more.

I definitely wanna buy a MBP 15 inch before I go back, but if there wont be a new MBP before Jan 4 I would buy one right now. (So I can use it right now)

What are the expectations? Shall I wait a month or two or are there no updates till next year?

Thanks a lot!

so apple didnt release new macbook pros, just airs. Should I wait to buy my first mac or just go ahead and buy one now???

I've wasted so much time reading and thinking about this, I could probably have grinded out enough money to just buy one by now... sigh.

I'm planning on buying a top of the line 15" model that will cost about $4500 and I will keep it for at least 3 years. However, I feel that I'm buying a 6-month old MBP since there is only a minor CPU speed bump. Moreover, the upgrade is extremely overpriced. Intel charges $14 extra to move from the i7 620m to the i7 640m but Apple smacks you with $200. Basically, there's a voice in my head that tells me: "Hey, if you were going to get this laptop... why didn't you get it 6 months ago? And if you didn't get it until now, why don't you wait 4 months so that your delay makes some sense?"

I'm really not sure what to do. I want one badly and it has everything I need except Blu-Ray and USB 3.0, but I also want to make the right decision. It seems hard for me to justify making a large purchase of a top of the line model that will be outdated in a few months. On the other hand, is the Sandy Bridge 2620m going to even improve performance much? Although I suppose the architecture is better, the clock speed is 100 Mhz lower. /Rant over... help

BTW: If I buy one now but sell it to get the next generation, what % of its value today am I likely to get back?

this is exactly what happened to me with the last model i bought, apple released the new model a month or two after i got mine and i was stuck with something that didn't have as much resale value. luckily i live in the czech republic where mac prices are still fairly high even for used models :)
still it makes getting a decently priced one from the states rather irritating.

in the end as long as it plays Diablo III i'll be happy
