It really is a good feature for anyone who uses it. I have it on my Sammy Galaxy Tab 4 and it's pretty cool typing a message on a forum, responding to an email on the other half of the screen, then resuming with my post when finished with the email. There are other ways you can use it. On the Galaxy Tab 12.2 Pro you have up to 4 active windows.

So you can type simultaneously on both: the mail and the post? I doubt this ;)

So, where is the advantage? Don't get me wrong, I can see advantages in watching a youtube video on the side or face timing while browsing, but your scenario isn't even an advantage: You end up with half the screen for your task. Humans are not build for real multi tasking

On small phone screens, I don’t see how practical/valuable this would be. Even on a tablet, it would be too small to use a split screen, effectively. On a 17”, 24”, 27”, etc., screen, yes. I already do this on my Mac. But a 4.7” screen…or even a 7” screen….heck no. What I would like would be the ability to easily switch between program windows on my phone/iPad. Maybe have a tiny indicator on the screen that allows you to easily switch back and forth between the windows rather than closing out the app or bring up another screen to select the app.. App switching is a bit more practical on a small screen.

You mean like, Mutlitasking Gestures build in the iPad? ;)

I believe extensibility is Apple's answer to people clamour for a split-screen view. In the end, you want more done with less, and the answer to that shouldn't be to fiddle with multiple, resizable windows, but instead, being able to access multiple apps (or at least their features) without needing to leave your core app. :)

As for split screen -- no it wasn't mentioned in the keynote. It could possibly be announced later. For instance, if Apple really is coming out with a 12-inch iPad, and the split screen is a feature exclusive to that iPad, then it would make sense that they would not announce the feature until they announce the hardware.

In what fantasy world is a tranformative new feature left out of the announcement. I remember people deluding themselves last year about io7.
"Dont worry--it can still change"

2 monitors

I use a two monitor set up at work because the active document that I'm working on is in front of me and my support document is on the other screen, it saves a lot of time bouncing back-and-forth. I use a similar situation at home on my Windows machine but I have an extrawide monitor so I can easily put anything side-by-side. I'm not so sure my mini could be comfortably used in that same scenario.

Adjustable split screen and floating Windows would be awesome. I mean, iPads are for media consumption right?

Don't forget it is for content creation/productive work as well.

I don't get why that some people only think the ipad is just for media consumption but it is not just for that.

Just look at schools/colleges and and many business's are using ipads or android tablets or windows 8 tablets as there work tool/station.

But anyway i agree the Ipad needs a split sceen(multi window) and floating windows would make the ipad 10x better for content creation/productive work.

In order for that to work with out always reloading apps. it needs to have 2GB of RAM.

All of the school deployments I'm familiar with included physical keyboards. All of the enterprise deployments I'm familiar with either included physical keyboards or used apps with extensive drop-down menus to minimize typing. Typing on glass is a chore for many users.

Is the split screen really a big deal though for most users? Remember, we all have our own special features we'd like to see but they have to determine the broad user base when deciding on this stuff. I find the left to right swiping works fine to switch back and forth between open apps. I also prefer the full screen at al times for an app. I hate phones because of the useless, tiny screens so why would I want to cut my perfectly sized iPad screen in half? YUK! :D

Personally I don't do much of that anyways. I'm usually working with one app and that's got my attention.

I'm switching between a group iMessage and tapatalk right now. I could find hundred of uses for it. Especially if the split was realizable like 75/25.

----------

I used Quasar to do just that on my jailbroken Mini 1 with its paltry 512MB.

May have been due to other tweaks but I found the performance to be lousy, very lousy.

Swype keyboard is confirmed as coming in iOS 8.

There was a new thing in Xcode 6, which is being able to test a resizeable iPhone or iPad screen. It will probably be very silly to have on an iPhone screen, but perhaps this is a hint that iOS 8 will have resizeable apps, and therefore will be able to have a "Split-screen" feature like an actual desktop?

Personally, I like to use one app at a time and I find that switching apps with iOS is pretty easy as it is. I'm all for choice however, so I'm split screen will be great for some people, just not for me necessarily..
