The whole logic of your argument fails right from the start. Old people didn't dress like this when they were young! They probably dressed more like this:

What about there 20's AND 30's?

Well since I can still wear clothes that I bought 25 years ago, I guess I will continue to dress as I did then. In reality I wear shorts and a tee shirt as my normal every day attire--and that won't be changing anytime soon (well as soon as it warms up enough to put my shorts on anyway).

I saw an elderly couple in your standard old person outfit (like in the original post) in my gym the other week.

They were on the rowing machines in their every day clothes for yonks. I hope they brought another outfit to change into afterwards.

I agree with the OP.

It happens. Even at apple. Even Steve Jobs will not innovate his attire.:D

Well, I'm in my 20's and don't wear tees and jeans all the time -- mostly because they're not considered appropriate office attire; and if I'm going out with friends I usually want to at least wear a "nice" tee. But I could totally imagine wearing tees and jeans at age 80. Why not?

BTW, my parents are over 60, and my dad wears blue jeans all the time, usually with a polo shirt or a horrible turtleneck (there is such a thing as a nice turtleneck, but these are terrible). It's utterly dorky by my standards, but it's not really any different from what he wore as "casual" clothing 30 years ago.

Huh? Are you asking "what about when they were in their 20s and 30s"? Um, what age do you think the couple in that picture I provided is?

They look pretty wealthy for there time.

This looks so freaking cool. Perhaps a two button variety but his suit would look sharp to this very day. And hers with a slight mod to make the skirt more fitted and it's sartorial perfection :).

The guy's shoes are sweet.....I wish those would come back in style...

I love the look of the suit and the fedora. Not that I would ever were it, because I look like an idiot and I hate ties, but I still like it.

What I think will be more interesting than the fashions are the fashion accessories. I find the thought of a nursing home full of old folks with eyebrow rings, tongue rings, bellybutton rings, and tons of tattoos to be amusing. That cut dolphin on your belly will look like a blue whale after kid #3. That barb wire tattoo on your bicep is going to look like something a chicken with a Sharpie did. That butterfly on you boob is going to be around your navel when your 70, honey. :)

I used to see an elderly couple at my grocery store. I remember them because they kept the same schedule as me so I would see them every week. He was impeccable in a dark suit and fedora. She always wore a brightly (almost technicolor) dress and matching hat. They looked like the just came back from their daughter's wedding just to do their grocery shopping. Such style. They must have since passed away as I haven't seen them for a few years now. Since I live on a farm in the country, I'm wearing mostly jeans and cowshit.

I don't thing this thread has a lot of merit, as styles have changed since they were younger. When they were younger, more people dressed formally for every day activities. Today people dress more casually through all ages than they did 20 to 50 years ago.

I used to wear bright t-shirts and jeans. Now I wear mostly dress pants, slacks, khakis, dress shirts, and sometimes a blazer or jacket. I wear a tie sometimes but it depends on where I'm going. I dress more formally for my age than most people do.

Dressing formally though, is making a come back.

Thank god ... it seems that now teens and 20-somethings intentionally dress like street trash. At least 30 years ago when I was a teen, khakis and polo/oxford shirts were de rigueur.

In our little community, I'm seeing more and more kids at the high-school wearing suits and ties on the guys, and nice dresses on the girls. Not a lot, but there seems to be few more each year. And fedoras seem to be making a comeback.

Of course, we also have large number of hippies from the 60s that never changed their style. If you are a youth, how do 'rebel' when your parents (all three of them) are wearing pony-tails, have multiple piercings, wear tie-dye, and grow their own weed. Heck.... I'm describing some of their grand-parents!

I feel sorry for today's youth if the best way to freak out your parents is to dress conservatively, go to church, and believe in the goodness of Big Government.

Weird times indeed.
