I was never going to purchase Apple care+ anyway because they keep a complete record of any time you speak to them online. Therefore they would have known anyway.

I was honest and upfront and they were completely helpful to me in return.

So nice to know you did this the right way. Honesty and kindness go a long way.

Happy for you, man!

For my iPad mini, I went through a screen replacement twice (toddler). Then I got an iPad Air, and bought a Griffin Survivor Slim case. Which isn't "slim" by any definition, but it took a 10 foot dive without a single scratch.

When people get a Macbook, I ask them whether they got an external harddisk for backups.
When people get an iPad, I ask them whether they got a sturdy case.

AC+ is not legally "insurance," so this isn't a thing.
"Although this service contract is not an insurance policy..." http://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/docs/applecareplusnaen.html

Run the diagnostic. If an impact sensor is tripped you'll be back where you started. If it's not, you can use AC+ to replace the screen. If Apple does not want to allow this behavior they can either require in-person inspection of the device or install more robust damage sensor systems.

There is no requirement that the device be undamaged, simply that it pass Apple's inspection for damage (which can be limited to a remote diagnostic).

You are correct that this is not "insurance fraud", however, it is Warranty Fraud, which can be punishable in a court depending upon if Apple felt like pursuing people committing such fraud.

A company doesn't have to ask if there are problems with the device when the Apple Care+ is purchased. The coverage agreement states that coverage begins when it is purchased and any previous issues are not covered. Thus, if a device is already damaged and then you purchase Apple Care+ after the fact, then go to claim that the damage occurred after you purchased the coverage, you are committing fraud.

This not only could come back on the person committing the fraud. It also comes back to all other customers because it raises the amount of cases that Apple has to repair/replace, which will result in higher Apple Care+ costs later down the line.

oh thats how you did for a living?
I don't think I understand your question.

I did buy AppleCare+ for my IPP the day I bought it. I have not had to use it. There's also AC on my rMBP, Watch and I am pretty sure it's on my iPhone too. Have not needed to make use of it on any of the devices as yet.

If Apple did not expect people to buy after the fact you would have to buy AC when you purchase the device. Truth is any "extended warranty" is a rip off. It's actually very expensive insurance versus taking your chances. Sure it saves some people a lot of money but if Apple was not making a profit on AppleCare they would not offer it at all.

Glad you had a happy ending.

About 6 years ago I dropped my MacBook (while it was in a padded sleeve) and bent the chassis and screen. Couldn't even open it without a big ol "Screeeeeech!!"

Back then you had a full year to buy AppleCare. I hadnt bought it yet, but decided to bring my MBP in to to the Apple Store to see what they could do about the damage. They saw I had taken care of the computer other than the one event (no scratches, no water damage), so they took it, cloned my hard drive and gave me a new case, free of charge. Friggin amazing. I'll never forget that.

That one day of experiencing Great customer service probably made me a Mac user for life. Oh and I also told everyone I know.

wait so the glass wasnt actually cracked?
I think everyone here was thinking that the glass broke and therefore talking about apple care+. If it wasnt cracked and just the lcd was broken then im not surprised apple replaced it, they better have! if there is no damage just a broken lcd then they cannot say you need to pay for a replacement as there is no proof that wrong usage or an accident caused it.
great to hear anyway!

Nope the LCD broke, the screen and everything else was in perfect working order.

The Telco I got it from said it would be an out of warranty repair, and that I must of sad on the screen or something - Which is silly considering the size of it. He then "accused me" Of knocking it when it was in my bag, Despite the fact I told him my story. Oh well, Last time I deal with them....

All In all pretty stoked still! and It's made me rethink what Phone I'm gonna buy next, Because of the brilliant customer service.

Chiming in to say congratulations, and it's always been my experience that being upfront and polite with Apple results in very positive outcomes. I had an issue with my first iPhone, the original one. I had accidentally spilled alot of water on it and after drying it very fast it seemed to work fine but a week later the bottom portion of the screen, just enough that you couldn't 'pop' up the keyboard, stopped working. So I contacted Apple (Nearest store is 2 hours away), told them what happened and they had me send it in. They sent me a replacement back in 2 days saying it wasn't accidental damage so they sent me a new one. I was very surprised because I don't see how the water sensor wasn't triggered, and I had accumulated quite a few scratches on the back. But they sent me a refurbished phone with no issues, no scratches. I rarely have issues with my Apple products but I genuinely don't know any other company that's willing to help you out as much after the initial sale.

Although this is a different kind of experience, a couple of years ago I attempted to load the new version of OSX Mavericks on a 2008 MacBook Pro. At the time it was running Leopard, so I first upgraded to Snow Leopard to get access to the Mac App Store, and then downloaded and installed Mavericks. I ran into a bunch of issues and the OS would not complete the install properly. So I called Apple Tech Support. Even though the computer had been out of warranty and Apple Care had expired 2 years prior, they still spent over a half hour with me on the phone and helped me to get the new OS installed.

Too much effort for those stores to go the proper warranty way, they dont make any money either.
A fault like you had cannot be considered an out of warranty repair unless there is evidence / damage. I argued with many companies about problems like that and I have yet to loose :)
I once had customer service try to tell me that the scratch on bottom of my macbook pro was the reason why the logic board broke.... Went to an apple store and talked to a genius and him too looked sceptically at the scratch first but clearly he knew well enough that thats not the reason for the fault :D

Don't blame apple for how the telco rep treated you. Not to say they'd fix it for you, but I think they'd handle it with more empathy.

So I got an ipad Pro two days ago, today I got the pencil and smart keyboard.

Went to lunch, came back and boom the screens LCD has broken and got a weird "multicolored" line through the left side :(

So gutted and this could cost me 600 australian dollars because I was gonna wait a few more weeks until I get apple care +
Check with your credit card company. Here in the US they often have accidental damage protection for the first 90 days.

That looks like a defect, which is why they replaced it. Did you buy AppleCare+ for the replacement? :)

If you used a MasterCard or Visa check with them first. My card has 90 day break / theft protection clause which would cover a loss. Just a thought.

This. My Amex and Visa cards have 90 day purchase protection that cover against accidental damage. My iPad Pro bent in my backpack on day 87, and Amex paid me the full amount to replace the device (599+tax). Try it out - you pay for that insurance with yearly CC fees!

So a crime is only a crime when you get caught.
No. It is only fraud if you mislead them. You need to learn what fraudulent inducement is. There is a difference between fraud civilly and criminally. If they offer you Apple Care Plus and don't verify a pre-existing condition, their failure to engage in due diligence is not on you. We have health insurance plans that cover pre-existing conditions. I have not read the terms and conditions of Apple Care, mind you, but if they say they don't cover pre-existing conditions then there might be an issue if they engaged in due diligence while setting up coverage. If they take your money you are covered at that point.

Just shows if you go in there asking for help sometimes they will surprise you..congrats

I'm not sure what it's like where you live, but from experience here.. if you go to buy Applecare here, they demand to inspect the device before they sell it to you.

When I set up my Apple Care for my iPad Pro, it was within the a week of purchasing it. Possibly, if you set up Apple Care over the phone within the return window, they did not require an inspection of the device. I live in Long Island, New York, however, this was over the phone.
