Also, it sounds like no matter what you will have SOME sort of purple flare, but you can make it minimal?

Well I didn't have my protractor out, but this is roughly what I found in my own testing against my 100W-equivalent overhead light:

- Light in frame = no purple
- Light 1-10 degrees out of frame = purple glare
- Light >10 degrees out of frame = no purple

This is hilarious.

Update: We’ve heard reports on Twitter that the same issue is true with the iPhone 4S. They are correct, there is a very slight purple haze on images taken under the same lighting conditions with the 4S (pictured, at right), however it is far more pronounced on the iPhone 5.

Reports on Twitter? Ugh. And I love the "far more pronounced" part. I read it as, "Our 'article' is still super interesting."

Update 2: After letting the news stew for a while, we’ve learned that the purple haze issue was first spotted in Anandtech forums, where many users are suffering from the same thing. We’ve also noticed that the issue persists during video capture.

Suffering?

It is more than just flare when you shoot into a light source. This is a shot of a plain painted wall in my office. The front camera does the same thing, btw.

So here we have it folks. The 4S has no purple flare, and the iPhone 5 is the worst offender according to this article. 4S = no purple. 5 = purple haze all in my frame.

"Purple haze all in my frame.. lately things don't seem the same.. It's shooting funny, but I don't know why.. excuse me while I sit and cry."

Felt horrified about this "issue" as the Camera is the feature which I probably use the most in my 4S. So took it and pointed it to direct light. No problem. Started moving the source to the edges and the frame, until I saw something. I started to move it a lot more, moved myself and the phone and was finally able to get a huge purple haze effect... Which I hadn't yet seen on any of my pictures.

So it's not an iPhone 5 issue in the end I guess.

and everyone is just saying, what do you expect from such a thin phone...lol

I didnt tell them to make it so thin, what if they had made it the same size as the 4s, thick wise, then added a flawless 10megapixel camera, and a 2500mega amp battery for all day battery life. Not only would the camera have been an upgrade, and the phone would last multiple days, and it would feel a little heavier which at this point would be a plus.

So they decided on a bad design, yes its pretty but its still a flawed design then they say you cant have it all. Did anyone here ask for a 7.6mm phone?? and if so were you willing to take the low battery usage level, and camera defects as a compromise? Somehow I dont think Steve would have been on board with that.

watch the next iphone will be 1mm thick, it will last 10 minutes on battery and the pictures will come out as stick people.

I'll have to see the iPhone 5's camera myself if there really is flare.

I have seen NO purple flare on my sister-in-law's iPhone 4S or my brother's old iPhone 4.

Not only is it thin, but the frame is made from aluminum instead of the Stainless Steel the 4 and 4S had. Have you ever crushed an aluminum soft drink can in your hand? Pretty easy isnt' it? Now try that with a steel can. Can't crush it can you?

Yep and I think it was Steve who insisted on Stainless. I guess we all miss him more and more as time goes on.

Also, where can you find a steel can now a days to test that, lol

That's from fluorescent lighting. Documented since at least the 3gs

It still amazes me how you guys can blow something that happens with all cameras so far out if proportion. Do you guys know nothing about proper lighting for pictures?

What is the conclusion?

Every Smartphone suffers from this. The only solution is to avoid it by shooting at a proper angle.

most people just repeat specs and think if the number is higher its better

yes, that is just a test photo, similar to all the "brick wall" pictures you see when people test lens distortion.
Here is an example in natural light. It is still there, but less pronounced.

I'm guessing its the sapphire crystal that may be causing this purple effect.

It could be. I don't understand why they went and put in a sapphire crystal anyhow. It's not like there was a deluge of scratched lenses from the 4 and 4s. I've never had an iPhone lens scratch on me ever.

I think they went with the sapphire crystal to make it thinner and stronger. I'm just saying that with the iPhone 5 this may be the reason we are seeing this effect. Sure all smartphones attribute to this but have you seen how thin this thing is?
