Also, it sounds like no matter what you will have SOME sort of purple flare, but you can make it minimal?
Update: Weve heard reports on Twitter that the same issue is true with the iPhone 4S. They are correct, there is a very slight purple haze on images taken under the same lighting conditions with the 4S (pictured, at right), however it is far more pronounced on the iPhone 5.
Update 2: After letting the news stew for a while, weve learned that the purple haze issue was first spotted in Anandtech forums, where many users are suffering from the same thing. Weve also noticed that the issue persists during video capture.
Well I didn't have my protractor out, but this is roughly what I found in my own testing against my 100W-equivalent overhead light:
- Light in frame = no purple
- Light 1-10 degrees out of frame = purple glare
- Light >10 degrees out of frame = no purple
and everyone is just saying, what do you expect from such a thin phone...lol
I didnt tell them to make it so thin, what if they had made it the same size as the 4s, thick wise, then added a flawless 10megapixel camera, and a 2500mega amp battery for all day battery life. Not only would the camera have been an upgrade, and the phone would last multiple days, and it would feel a little heavier which at this point would be a plus.
So they decided on a bad design, yes its pretty but its still a flawed design then they say you can have it all. Did anyone here ask for a 7.6mm phone?? and if so were you willing to take the low battery usage level, and camera defects as a compromise? Somehow I dont think Steve would have been on board with that.
watch the next iphone will be 1mm thick, it will last 10 minutes on battery and the pictures will come out as stick people.
Not only is it thin, but the frame is made from aluminum instead of the Stainless Steel the 4 and 4S had. Have you ever crushed an aluminum soft drink can in your hand? Pretty easy isnt' it? Now try that with a steel can. Can't crush it can you?
It is more than just flare when you shoot into a light source. This is a shot of a plain painted wall in my office. The front camera does the same thing, btw.
That's from fluorescent lighting. Documented since at least the 3gs
It still amazes me how you guys can blow something that happens with all cameras so far out if proportion. Do you guys know nothing about proper lighting for pictures?
What is the conclusion?
Every Smartphone suffers from this. The only solution is to avoid it by shooting at a proper angle.

Why is the iPhone 5 flare purple and the 4S NOT purple?

I'm guessing its the sapphire crystal that may be causing this purple effect.

It could be. I don't understand why they went and put in a sapphire crystal anyhow. It's not like there was a deluge of scratched lenses from the 4 and 4s. I've never had an iPhone lens scratch on me ever.
lol i think he's trying to rub his merc and pool in our face (my face, anyway)
You should refrain from including an entire board in your responses.
Mine has it as well; can duplicate it easy.
