Well, i knew it was to good to be true. I purchased mine on launch date, had a Dec 2009 upgrade date, and i missed the $ amount by 5 measly bucks :( I was at $95

Still stuck at 12/2009. Guess AT&T doesn't like me much. Oh well I'll wait until next year.
Again, if you did not already have a July, August or Sept. Upgrade Eligible date you were not going to get moved to today.

This change was only for customers that were already within the 3 mointh window.

Dave

If it weren't for my FAN discount of $6 and change a month, my bill would have been over $99 a month since I got my 3G last July, and I'd be upgrade eligible. So for about $73 more spread over 12 months, I could have gotten my 3G S for $200 less.

Oh well. Removing my FAN today, however, in preparation for next year. :)

I am within that three month window 7/13/2009 and my account still has not been changed to reflect the new date and no one at att is even aware there has been a press release. I had to tell two customer service reps where the press release was on their own site.

Through the past two weeks, I've come to the conclusion that most AT&T service reps are idiots. They didn't know the iPhone 3GS was out; I had to tell them. (This is partly Apple's fault, too -- they're exclusively represented by AT&T in the US and they won't even give them a one-day heads-up of what's about to be released. Nice.) They couldn't explain why I am only eligible for an upgrade in April 2010. They didn't know about the press release yesterday; I had to tell them the URL. And their web site sucks with respect to telling you anything useful like "your upgrade status will be updated at this specific time" or "here is the exact URL to go to to buy an iPhone 3GS".

Right now I can't even tell if I still have the $699 price or the (supposed) $499 price, because their idiot web site doesn't appear to have changed since yesterday.

Like Sony, AT&T is a fine company to deal with as long as you never have to deal with them.

This is what I don't understand... how can any iPhone 3G user be eligible for an upgrade in July, August or September? The phone was released on July 11th of 2008. That would make it exactly one year next month.

I thought to upgrade you had to be at least 18 months into a your 2-year contract? If you bought an iPhone 3G on release day (with the early upgrade $199/$299 price points), how can you be eligible so early? I bought mine on release day and I'm not eligible for an early upgrade until December of 2009.

Any ideas? None the less, I'm going to use my upgrade on the next iPhone.

Just another example of how ass backwards AT&T is.

I really don't understand, I plan on waiting in line tomorrow morning at an att store to snag a 3gs but i dont want to have to fool with the stupid rep there either agruing my upgrade eligibility. I plan on calling a few more times today and then tomorrow morning just taking a copy of the press release my recent bill and my wit and getting the upgrade then.

If you spend more than 99 dollars a month on the primary account you become eligible for an upgrade in 12 months rather than 18 months. This new upgrade policy caters only to those specific 3g customers.

They should have made this point much more clearly in their press release. As it is, you have to wade through a bunch of crap to find out about the $99/month requirement. A bunch of people, including myself, read that initial release yesterday and thought we'd be able to get a new iPhone 3GS for $299 or even $499; as it is, I am still stuck at the $699 level.

I call shenanigans on AT&T for issuing a very misleading press release. The goodwill they earned back yesterday is gone again.

Not exactly. The $99 example is just to explain one way to be "Upgrade Eligible" in July, August or Sept of 2009.

Both AT&T announcements were very clear that if you were not already going to be "Upgrade Eligible" in July, August or Sept. this offer did not apply to you.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we've been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

If you're one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18.

What I am saying is that users who have an eligible upgrade in July, august, or September, like myself, should receive a full upgrade today based on att press release.

Sorry, I thought you had a Dec 2009 Upgrade Eligible date based on your previous post in another thread. Nothing in the Press release would get you to a July, August or Sept. Upgrade Eligible date based on your current Dec. date.

So share a few more details about your situation so that you are not disappointed tomorrow in the store. You have access to the same data that the AT&T or Apple store will use to determine your price. If you don't see that you are currently "Upgrade Eligible" as reflected in the system, you will not get the $199 / $299 price tomorrow.

What about the $399/$499 price? I'm not even seeing that on my account... still showing me at $599/$699, and I bought my 3G on 7/11/2008 (launch day). And this is after an AT&T Store rep assured me I'd qualify for the $499 price on a 32 GB 3GS.

Read the release, you are getting a full upgrade.

I don't know how much clearer that release can get. If your iPhone 3G on your AT&T account says that you are eligible for a full upgrade in July, August or September, when you go to buy an iPhone 3GS tomorrow, you get the FULL upgrade. AKA paying for a subsidized phone. You will pay the 199/299 price for the iPhone 3GS.

Ways to get this "12 month" under contract upgrade is if your under a family plan, I believe only the head of the account is able for an upgrade after 12 months. All subsequent lines added in are on an 18 month upgrade basis.

I pay 133.51 per month for my iPhone 3g. Last Tuesday after the keynote I was eligible for a early upgrade price on the new iPhone (399/499) and my full upgrade pricing became available 7/13/09. I clearly meet the requirements to have my full upgrade eligibility changed to today's date based on the press release issued yesterday.

Again, we need a few more details.

Have you purchased any phone after you iPhone 3G purchase on 7/11/2008?
What price did you pay on 7/11/2008?
Where are you see the pricing, is it through Premier?
What is your current account status, current with no missed payments?

All of these questions will help us try to figure out if there is really a problem on your account or just what might be going on for your situation.

The 7/11/2008 purchase is the last iPhone I bought. I paid $299 for it... previously, I had bought TWO unsubsidized pre-3G iPhones (the original 8 GB model and then the 16 GB model). I don't have any sort of Premier account. I have never missed a payment and I have been with AT&T for 6 years now.

I got my 3G as a new AT&T customer on 8/30/08, and I qualify for the lower pricing structure..

Got a text to confirm, as well as Apple showing me that I'll be good:

Sorry I was unclear on the details you needed.

There have been no other purchases on my line between the day I bought my iPhone 3G and todays date.
I payed 199 for my 3G when upgrading from my 1st gen iPhone.
Currently I see 399/499 with a full upgrade available 7/13/2009, my account has shown this since the keynote ended on the 8th. My account is in perfect standing, no missed payments for 3 years.

I just finished arguing with a level 3 Att rep, he was stating that the press release move my upgrade from December 13 to July 13 when my upgrade status has been showing July 13 for at least two weeks. He was the highest person in his building so he is having someone higher call me back. This is the first time in 3 years I have been disappointed with ATT.

Score! One of my lines with an iPhone 3G is eligible.

Question though, I pre-ordered an iPhone on another line for the $400 price through AT&T for delivery tomorrow. Do you think I can go into an AT&T store, return the phone from the one line, and re-buy it on the other line for the cheaper price? I called AT&T and they said they would be able to work something out, but has anybody ever dealt with something like this?

How long is AT&T going to take to finish updating whether or not people are eligible for this early upgrade? I don't think I am eligible (based on my previous date that I had listed in my account) but their system is still down for me! I do the *639# thing and I get the "We're sorry... try again later" message and it doesn't work online either! Forget about working at midnight... I just want it to work sometime today :D

This is the post I was asking you about, in it you stated you had a Dec upgrade date, what changed? Did you recently change your plan to a higher rate? The MRC is calculated based on a 3 month rolling average, so the > $99 is always based on the MRC.

I am in the same boat, bought the 3g on launch day. I am available for an upgrade in December. I am simply selling my phone so provide myself with my own subsidy. The 3g is worth at least 200 dollars, which gives you the same price 399-200=199. I don't know why people are freaking out about the lack of the ability to upgrade. Its a subsidized phone, and that the deal when you want a new phone before your contract is up.

Dave

My plan has always been over 99 bucks, since i bought the 3g. The very fist time I checked att.com after the new phone was announced it said december. Moments later I checked on apples website and began the preorder process and the date of 7-13 was given.

I was in the same boat you were in. My upgrade was 17 July and didn't change in the system after the press release. I went into a AT&T store and they stated they can override my 17 July upgrade so that i can get the iphone for 199 on friday. I also asked what if I wanted to purchase at Best Buy. She said I will put a note on your acct so they can honor the 199. After that, I called BB and told them there should be a note on my acct for the 199. He said they would have to call AT&T to verify. I called Customer Service and found out on my acct, there sits the note. :)
