I think that is pretty much our only hope now. Customer service has no idea whats going on, and I dont think they care since they cant sell the iPhone anyway.

The Right Question

I finally figured out the Right Question to ask of the AT&T rep when I called 611:

"When will I be eligible for any discount pricing?"

That's a question which they can answer and which will cut through all of the BS. In my case, the answer is simple: In January 2010, I'll be eligible for $399/$499 pricing; in April 2010, I'll be eligible for $199/$299 pricing.

So, at least in my case, I will be skipping the 3GS completely; by the time April rolls around next year, we'll be talking about the impending release of the iPhone 4G.

Doubtful that 4G will be ready from the carrier's standpoint let alone Apple will have a 4G device ready to go 12 months from now.

mine is still stuck in "We're sorry, but we are experiencing a temporary system error that prevents us from retrieving your account information. Please wait a few moments and try again. If this issue persists please contact Customer Care at 1-800-331-0500."

I preordered mine 2 nights ago from apple, and *639# doesnt work for me, says try again later??

Anyone else have this issue?

Same here... I ordered back on the day of the keynote! I might give them a call later but I'm not the primary on the family account so I don't really know if they will deal with me or not... grrr!

This means that your lines have been processed and a new iPhone / SIM is now parked on your lines. :D

Follow these instructions to verify that you have a new contract "end" date in June 2011.

The new announcement does not apply to you but you do get to take advantage of the best iPhone 3G S pricing on July 6. :)

We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

Dave

Because upgrade eligibility is calculated on a PER LINE basis before taxes. Your main line is >$99/month, the other lines aren't.

OK, this makes sense to me now. Thanks for this information. I'm not happy about it, but I understand why. It's still $300 less for me thanks to the first upgrade then I expected to have to pay.

Same issue for me as well. My 3gs is coming to my house from Apple tomorrow and I still don't know if I will qualify for the $200 service credit from AT&T (I ordered the 32GB version). Is it just those of us who pre-ordered already who are experiencing this error?

No, I didn't pre-order, but I'm still encountering the error.

Talked to CS, and they've notated my account because they agree that I should be eligible under the rules given--July date, good standing acct, over $100...but my date still hasn't changed from 7/11/09. They said I should go to an AT&T store though, because they will handle her note in my account appropriately...somehow I don't believe that. I was going to buy from the Apple store tomorrow, but I guess I'll head to the AT&T store first.

i bought my iPhone 3g 4 days after launch and was first told that I wasnt eligible to upgrade until Dec/09. But I called AT&T earlier today and spoke with a rep and was told that I am in fact eligible for the upgrade tomorrow. So I guess your upgrade date doesn't have to be july, august, or september because mine always Dec/09 but im eligible for 32GB iPhone 3G S for $299 tomorrow morning.

How much do you pay monthly?

currently sitting on hold with AT&T ( estimated wait 30 minutes ) to see why I'm still not eligible for the $199 / $299 when clearly my account states my upgrade date is 7/30/09.... *sigh*

I'm still unable to get any kind of information by calling *639#. Are you guys still having that problem?

Bump. When I call *639# now I get a text message that reads as follows:

"You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on 2/20/2011."

This information is obviously incorrect because it's basing the date on the fact that I already purchased my 3GS from Apple and received and activated it today. For people who already pre-ordered from Apple, how are you contacting AT&T to see about getting credited the difference on your bill?
