Actually, with the PS3 you can use a mouse/keyboard, and download extra content. I'm not sure on the 360 as I don't own one.

my official starting lineup.

Drum roll please? :p

I have a 360 on it, I play:
1) COD4
2) COD4
3) something else, cant remember
4) did i mention COD4?
5) I think for now i prefer FPS on console anyway.

on the computer side i play:
1) WOW
2) WOW!!!
3) oblivion
4) Medieval Total war
5) Age of Empires 3

so im assuming since the above have been around for a while, that a MBP in boot camp could easily handle the above on "Ultra High" settings. As my current desktop is only single core, one gig ram, and 512 agp (DDR or DDR2, cant remember) video and Oblivions system config says i should have it on High settings. surely a 2.2 dual core with 512GDDR3 and 4 gigs of ram could play oblivion ?

so.. Im gonna save through the summer for a MBP with at least 512mgb Video.

If i join the cult and take uber care of it (disk defrag/ registry cleaner[the mac equivalents]) regularly and dont download viruses-- oh wait, there really aren't any! how long well Emily last? (Ive named my impending mac Emily, after the Sweetest and Hottest girl that ever lived, imho)

plus, by that time, (June-July) they might have Bluray as standard (or semi standard?)

I think-- if G-d brought a computer-- He would buy a mack; after all, He created the world; so He would need an artistically inclined computer for that.

Bear in mind if you get the 17" Hi-Res MBP that 8600M has also gotta drive a 1920x1200 monitor, which I guess is pretty stressful in gaming. The difference between the 1440x900 and 1920x1200 must be very large in terms of how difficult it is to push pixels around it...though I do hear the 15" MBPs run at a lower clock rate which may balance any advantage out

If the MBP does non-native resolutions well, that may be of no concern though. You could of course get an external monitor or HDTV with a lower resolution to play games on if it boosts frame rates.

When I had my dell I used my laptop for gaming and it worked fine. I see no problem using a laptop for gaming. I only use laptops for gaming.

I don't think the argument is that laptops don't work for gaming, I believe it's that if you're looking for a cheap, good gaming rig, a desktop is better, as it generally has better components for cheaper.

Now that I have been getting used to a controller I am liking it more but I still will never forget about the mice and keyboard:eek:

What about these games?

How much diff is there between the 128, 256, and 512 when it comes to these following games?

Civ 4
c&c3
wc3
nwn2
oblivion
tf2
unreal 3 (editor)
sc3

Im going to be buying a mbp but unsure on which one i should get. Refurbished 2.2 with 128
refurbished 2.4 with 256
new 2.4 with 256
Or 2.5 with 512

I'm leaning towards refurb 128, then upgrading next feb. Though for a couple bills more can pick up the extra .2 and 128 vram, which might make working/playing listed games bearable, dont need max settings just want smooth fps. Anyone able to help shed light on how these games work. Thanks.

It's still not going to be the same thing as a PC with a keyboard/mouse. And the downloadedable content is just the content made available at the Sony online marketplace correct? That doesn't even scratch the surface of available content for games like Oblivion.

Hopefully the MBP will have a faster video card in the next revision that might possibly be able to use more video memory but the 8600M GT is of no use with 512MB. The card isn't fast enough to benefit from going from 256MB->512MB. Even certain faster desktop video cards can't really use all of 512MB except at high resolution like 1920x1200 or higher. You need something more like an 8800M part in a laptop before worrying about getting 512MB.

whats the general life expectancy of a MBP (assuming you take good care of it) in regards to its hardware vs program reqs, and in more general life?

OP: It seems to me that Apple uses premium components in their machines, and this is great for longevity for those who take care of their equipment. A way to research this would be to look around at how many are still using :apple: hardware that is several generations old. I know some PC builders also use high quality parts, but several use crap innards, which is why they can sell them so cheaply. The only thing I've ever had to replace on anything I've purchased from Apple is a hard drive on my graphite iMac, and it was exposed to extreme temperatures, (outside the acceptable range specified for HD's). I'm sure I've been lucky, as I've read about others having issues.

Burningrave101: Yes, I agree, but it's not as horrible as you implied by saying you can't use the keyboard/mouse, or download extras. It's not as good as on a PC if those are things that you care about, but it's not as awful as you implied, either. :)

Help me gather some gaming benchmark data

I'd like to gather some Unreal Tournament 3 benchmark data for various 15" MacBook Pros (2006, 2007, 2008) running either Vista or XP in a Boot Camp partition. If any of you are in that category, please run the Suspense map Flyby at quality level 5 at 1440x900 (Full Screen, of course) and post your average frame rate here.

If you don't own the Retail version, the DEMO version lets you run the Suspense Flyby.

Here's a benchmarking tool that makes it easy:

Sure vista can do 4gb of ram and while you have to find a way to work around to use more than 4 gb of ram under vista is ridiculous (should use 4gb of ram or more right out the box). And I dont even want to know how screwy windows address its ram (addresses randomly and not to what app actually needs more ram but addresses more to whats not needed). Also you need the right motherboard for it to properly use that 4gb of ram or otherwise it will just utilize a measley 3.5.
;)

P.S. I bet after 4gb of ram the rest 60gb will be useless ans just to make microsoft look good on paper, as a I can do ram kinda deal. I use windows for gaming and 1 other app and is even a 15+ year user ever since the good ol dos days. I just converted to the mac side in 2005. Windows is still usable, I juat now prefer macs and I cant imagine not using osx anymore.

You have to excuse my typing, Im doing it over on the iPhone :D

It is very simple to run 4 gigs of ram on Vista...if your using the x64 version (there is also windows xp x64 edtion).
