It's stupid. I've never had any scratches.

You don't want scratches on your phone... so you're going to put some plastic crap over it, which will surely scratch so you can replace the plastic again in a few months?

What?

I throw you in the same category with people who put plastic on their furniture.

I've owned the 2G, 3G and 3GS. Never had a screen protector but always had phone in a slip case. All 3 have had scratches and blemishes to the bezel and back casing however NEVER had a scratched screen. Now the plastic casing and bezel have gone on the Iphone 4 in theory my iPhone should look better then ever over time.

I'm sure it will be fine. I've had my 3G for two years and only 1 week of that with a film on (I was at a beach and worried about the sand), and I cant find a single scratch anywhere on my screen. And I'm traditionally very hard on my phones (I had 5 LG Chocolates in one year).

What is a watch? :p

Ps - that iPhone 4 cracked glass test is a bit daft. The glass cracked on the THIRD drop!

I've never dropped my iPhone once over three years, fair enough accidents happen but if you drop an iPhone 3 times then you really are clumsy and prob shouldn't carry anything with glass full stop :)

Darn you Apple! Where are our diamond screens? Then we'd only have to clear our pockets of carbides, nitrides, borides, and fullerines to be "scratch-proof." Oh and please reduce the price while you're at it

I plan on going naked. Eventually, I'm sure it will get a scratch or two. Big deal, it's only a phone and will be replaced someday anyway. It's funny how some get so stressed over something like this. I have more important things to worry about than getting a scratch on a couple of hundred dollar phone. To all you worriers, relax and have a nice day.:)

As long as it's more scratch resistance than my scratch free 3GS I'll be happy.

That demonstration on the Dell Streak with its Gorilla Glass was undoubtedly impressive. But what I'd like to know is if Apple using something better, equally good, or inferior to this?

If the scratch resistance is any better than the 3GS then I will be happy, because I have never scratched my 3GS.

Also in talking about strength I think they were saying that it should be better than the old iPhone's at taking a drop. I know there was that 'drop test' but for all we know the prototype could have been made of the same glass as a 3GS. I'll believe them when they drop an iPhone 4 that came from a retail shelf.

So by not lying to you, they are "choosing their words?" Sounds to me like they just said a sentence. I seem to remember something in English class.... something about when you use "like" or "as".

Look- the glass on this new phone is going to kick ass. And it will not be scratch-proof. Everyone wins.

It comes down to the user- how rough are you on your phones? I put mine through hell, so I am going to buy a screen protector. If you are a very casual user and you don't anticipate any sand or diamonds in your pockets then you will probably be fine if you go naked.

I know their are going to be 48 threads on here next week about people who scratched their new phones, all claiming that Apple "lied" to them.

Keep choosing your words, Apple. Some of us listen.

3gs back versus front

I've had my 3gs for a year, no protector, no case. I carry it in my pockets with keys, coins, etc. I don't baby it.

The front is still almost flawless. A few small scratches. The back on the other hand is totally battered. Scratches, cracks, you name it.

If the iPhone 4 is more scratch resistant than the 3gs, there really is little need for an external case. To have a back made out of the same material as the front is wonderful.

The common name for aluminosilicate glass is "clear aluminum". It was "invented" when Scottie traveled back in time and gave the "inventor" the chemical formula in exchange for a very large water reservoir.

So basically, yeah, nothing is going to break this ****!

I love this post! BTW I'm speaking into my mouse to type this...

Thanks for the laugh!!!

If 4 > 3GS

My 3GS has held up pretty darn well... I'm not careful... it gets dropped, thrown around with keys and a GPS in my purse, etc. I'm confident enough in it's glass that I've let my Jack Russell dog have at it with the "Pets" app... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMDnxcRHC-Q

If the 4 is better than the 3GS... I'm sold! :)

I'm not worried. This will be my third iPhone without a screen protector or a case.

If you want more reassurance, here's a tweet by David Pogue a few minutes ago:

Pogue Oh CRUD!!! Set the iPhone 4 on a truck hood in a parking lot--it slipped off and fell 5 feet to pavement! Not a scratch. Whew!!

I had to send him a reply chastising him; no need being foolish with the thing!

I think you're looking way too far into this.

And Apple never said it was scratch-proof. They just said it was more scratch resistant.

I'm not worried since my 3GS was naked the whole year I had it and only suffered two extremely minor hairline scratches.
