I and others would rather it be done professionally by Apple.

Same here. We shouldn't have to goto the jailbreak community for this kind of functionality, but until Apple (moving at it's glacial development speed) deems to bless us with their version, we're stuck with jailbreaking.

Agreed with Apple's slow pace of adopting user-friendly features that other phones have. It seems that SJ doesn't want to be consumer-led, but technology-led. That makes sense to me. What I do not understand is why a company Apple's size can't have technology-led (new features and hardware) and consumer-led divisions inputting into the final products. Seriously - why is it still not possible to synchronize To-Do items on the iPhone from iCal?

Sometimes Apple seems like an amazing artisan carpenter, producing the most exquisitely designed and built furniture, but with missing dowels.

Improve notifications?

They need notifications.

I will go with overall less restrictive but you will never see it.:(

Yes. I am sick and tired of people posting their hardware wish lists when the OP asked about realistic expectations in ios 5.
I call it RTFPost

ETA: I don't think you'd appreciate it if you needed help with your iphone, but someone posts, the iphone needs over the air synching in your post. That doesn't help your problem, now does it?

Wow, you need to chill out a little. Also, if off topic responses upset you so much, why make it a lot worse with your own? It's not like you even attempted to answer the OP's question.

Anyway, when it comes to iPhones it's not like you can strictly separate the hardware and OS.

Here's my guess (not necessarily my wishlist):

* cloud storage/syncronization API
* some of the build-in apps use the storage/syncronization API
* UI look & feel update; built-in apps updated to new look & feel
* much improved notification UI
* OpenGL update
* nitro javascript engine available outside of safari
* wireless printing that works with printers I already own

I'm wishing for a shared file system, a custom, seemless file type handler system, more open multi-tasking.

My guess would be two big features:

iTunes cloud service
New notifications system

And some smaller ones:

Open up some more multitasking APIs
Minor refinements to Mail and Messages

Is it my imagination or have the Stocks and Weather apps been completely unchanged since the original iPhone?!

Other than that I'm not expecting much more beyond minor refinements to be honest.

I'd also love to see something to do with NFC, but without a hardware announcement they might withhold any talk of a potential NFC chip in iPhone 5. I'm really excited about this technology not just for mobile payments, but other uses as well. Imagine being able to hold an iPhone upto an NFC-equipped Mac to instantly initiate a file transfer over wifi  :D

I don't really see what's wrong with notes, iBooks...a lot of the stock apps are just fine. Except maps.

I really like the NOTES app. The only improvement I would like to see would be more font options. They should replace the MAPS app with voice navigation, or just update it and include voice navigation.

Would really like to see improved data encryption for the device. It is ridiculous that developers have to individually code each app to the data protection APIs to get the content properly encrypted on the device, this should just be a feature of the OS the way it is with Blackberries. Outside of Mail/Calendar/Contacts, not even Apple's iOS software (e.g. Pages, Keynote, etc.) uses their API.

Updated lockscreen
Improved notification system
Dynamic Icons/Widgets
Improved voice control
Micro-HDMI out
Facetime over 3G
Cloud-based service
Improved multitasking system
Improved Calender functionality
Redesigned folders
Custom alert sounds for MMS, email, etc…
Landscape mode with lock feature
Better autocorrect & customizable dictionary
More Airplay and Airprint features
Updated Icons
Folder size increased to 16
(like iOS 4, prolly apps will have some changes)
Improved Mail
Improved Safari
Improved Messages
Improved YouTube
Improved Notes
Improved Weather
Improved Calender
Improved Voice Memos
Improved Stocks
Improved Maps
Improved GameCenter
Improved iBooks

I don't think that it is realistic to expect all of these changes.

Im expecting:
-Widgets
-Mac OS X status bar with simple toggles, turning wifi on or off, volume and brightness sliders, power on, off, reboot, or lock. more interactive.
-Activated radio functionality, using the headphones as antenna.
-disk mode support.
-landscape homescreen.
-lock screen widgets?

I'd like to see a new UI whereas the current UI is available through a launchpad-icon. This would bring iOS and Mac OSX closer together...which is where I think Apple is heading. The "home" screen can have active widgets and dock items (to include launchpad).

I'd also like to see iOS take advantage of up & down swipes as opposed to side-to-side only. Perhaps a down swipe for notifications and an up swipe for a commonly used app like mail, messaging, etc.

Specifically, I'm looking forward to:

New notification system
Widget Support (basic clock & weather forecast would be nice)

Doubt Apple will do anything to "geek" the iPhone. The great appeal of the iPhone (and iOS) is it's simplicity. That's probably not what folks in here want to hear, but it is true. Apple will not do anything to the device if it requires a massive amount of tweak settings, etc. They want it to be useable across the masses (think grandma and grandpa).

That would be fantastic! :)

Absolutely, simplicity and ease of use is Apple's style, and is why iPhones are so popular because this is what gives them their broad appeal. I just hope they continue to make iOS simple and easy to use while also offering enough to appeal to the more advanced/geek crowd, rather than at their expense.

This. My daughter's name is Hailey. I've typed it a million times. It still doesn't recognize it.

It should recognise it if her name is in your contact list. I have friends with far more unique names that it recognises.
