So, does this mean the 85xx nomenclature now refers to chips that are going into computers? I thought that Motorola's nomenclature referred to the 85xx series as embedded chips? Has this been resolved somewhere?

I believe that the pdf was updated as of 2001 (it's on the site that the first url brings you to). I noticed it didn't have the 7455 listed, an oversight, or are they grouping the 7450's together??

Might be interesting if someone was to contact motorola and ask about it all.

As much as I hate to admit it, I will not be replacing my home machine (where I still do some graphic and video intensive stuff) until there is a G5. If we need a new machine here at work then well, we go out and buy whichever one we think fits the need and the budget.
I think a lot of people are with me on this one, a ton of home machines for us part time power users will be replaced as soon as a G5 becomes available but not a moment before. A new improved G4 won't do it either. No matter how much spiffier it looks, and no matter what the Steve says about it, it will still be old tech and I'm not buying into an "end of lifecycle" product.
No more weekends off, no more vacations, hire some more engineers, work in shifts, burn the midnight oil, drink the coffee and get the damn G5 done. Now.

LOL! Now THAT would be some funny ****! :D

I can just picture Jobs introducing "The All New 500MHz G5, starting at just $2499!" and watch him get:

1. Laughed off the stage
2. Hooked off the stage
3. Beaned with the G5 model
4. Stoned to death
5. Impaled with a chair from the 1st row

Or any combination of the above...

Or... by "Mgz" did you mean the mythical figure Mega-Gigahertz, which combined would actually be 500 Terahertz? I might be more inclined to believe that. ;)

Let's get the 1Gig chips in the iMacs and put the G5 in the pro line.

I don't think we can expect to see anything over 1.4Gig in the G5 at first. If the MHz gap between the two lines is too wide, the iMac might be perceived as "slow." They don't want a migration of pro-sumers from the iMacs.

Where do you come up with this stuff?

My money is on MWNY meeting all but the most optimistic expectations.

OSX 10.2
DDR
G4 at 1.4 or G5

Combination of all three elements nearly doubles the speed of PowerMacs in some applications.

so what if....

what if the new TiBooks are going to stay at 800MHz for another 8 months, and there isn't a G5 released at MWNY? i don't think thats very likely, there really has to be a G5 released at NY and then new iBooks at SF.:D

I don't think Jobs would ever get a pie in the face, he's just not evil/rich enough. You can't just hate him the way you can with Bill. And especially with the latest bit of anti trust BS. Its always bad when a nerd gets in power...

Hmmm, my G4 at home will be almost 3 years old come MWNY, and the really funny thing is that it still works just fine for what I do with it. I edit hour long movies on it and make some pretty complex motion graphics as well, and yes the render speeds are not blazing, but the job gets done.
My machines at work are supposed to be alittle bit more critical, but truth of the matter is that even here in the studio the DVD authoring platform is a G4 500. The edit system is due for an overhaul, and that will be a G5 when it comes out.
How many people out there are running 3 year old PC's in serious applications?
