i bought my first mac about 2 years ago, a 12" G3 ibook 800mhz 640MB and a 30GB hard drive. I'm awaiting my delivery today of my Power Mac dual 2.0 with 2GB and a 250GB hard drive. Hopefully I'll see a nice boost. :D after that I plan on getting the PM G6.

Well, I mean, back when I bought my Sawtooth, it was the second from the top of the line. 400mhz - and today the fastest pmacs are 2.7ghz - merely going by megahertz (not accounting for dual processors), that's a 6.75 fold increase. Guess that's what happens when you wait 5 years. So I hope for my next P-mac to be somewhere in the range of 3-4ghz, MP. However long it takes to get there, I'll wait.

But man, 5 years ago, 2.7ghz was mind boggling to my 400 mhzed mind. I can' imagine - will we be at 13ghz another 5 years from now? Will standard hard-drives be in the order of terabytes? What the HELL is big enough to fit on a 1 terabyte hard drive anyway.

Taking this further - mp3s were a huge revolution, because people realized that they could get sound almost as good as CDs (CDs do indeed still sound the best - despite Apple's claims about the awesomeness of AAC) in a little file, and would eventually able to keep tens of thousands of them on their computers. Will the next move be with movies? I'd put your average DVD somewhere between 5-10gb. With a 5 terabyte hard drive, will we be treating DVDs like the mp3s of the future?

It occurs to me that some might say, "well, we already have the DVDs of the future. DIVX." And to them I say, I'm talking about quality absolutely indistinguishable from an actual DVD.

For me, a Dual 2.0GHz Rev.D or a Dual 2.3GHz Rev. B PowerMac G5 with a 20" Apple Cinema Display. Or a 2GHz iMac G5. I'll probably upgrade anywhere between July - November. (Nov./Dec. is when expect new iMac and/or PowerMac upgrades, sounds reasonble, doesn't it?) I'll be upgrading from the PowerBook in my sig.

Yeah, I kinda like to keep posts short. (and unfortunately, confusing  )

my 1.33 g4 gets me by just fine for now....ill have to wait for either dual core G6 PM or PB G5....because those are gonna run everyone prob close to 3k or more but by waiting it will be worth it :D

Just bought a BTO 15" 1.67Ghz PB. My next purchase is probably gonna be an updated PB w/G5 or maybe a PowerMac.. My PC desktop isn't used anymore.. so i dont know if PM is the way to go. I like the portability of moving around in the house..

Nice thread, I love thinking about buying Macs... :p

Mine will be a PB 15" G5 Rev. B. Always Rev B. :) Thats gives me some time to sell the iBook in my sig, and save some more for a nice, fast PB G5. :D

A couple of iBook hybrid tablets for the wife and me. Make our current PM a fileserver and keep the mini doing its job as our webserver.

Since there is a company that makes conversion touchscreen iBooks, that would be a fun project.... I really hope tablet-format PCs become viable some day....

Next Mac???

I am unsure as to whether to update my 533 DP with a 1.4 Mercury Extreme and ATI Radeon 9600 or to get one of the new iMac/eMac's. I currently have 2 BIG hard drives in my PM with the RAM maxed out so it would be about a $ 350.00 purchase for that and another $400.00 for a 19in flat panel monitor. For around $750.00 I would have a nice system for another couple years and then I could keep the monitor for whatever the mini is at that time. Of course I could also get the 20in iMac. Decisions, decisions???? Anybody else either in the same quandry or gone one way or the other?

I'm considering selling my 15" PowerBook and replacing it with one of the new 20" iMac's since I no longer need the portability.

I figure I can sell the the PowerBook, for about the same price as what the iMac would cost... plus I'd be getting Tiger on the new machine. :)

The balance problem you reported has happened to me, too, with new Macs. Fortunately, it's easy to fix - usually, the cause is the balance slider in Sound preferences somehow got moved away from the center. Setting that back to center cleared the issue up for me.

Thanks for the advice but I'm afraid it isn't that easy!
I wont bore everyone here with the full story, just search for "unbalanced sound" in the forums and you'll find the relevant thread.
But to help explain quickly, get in front of a NEW powerbook 15" (not a 12" or a 17"), fire up iTunes, play a track, while its playing go into preferences/sound and switch the balance FULLY to the left. Listen. Then move the balance FULLY to the right. Listen.
I guarantee you that after performing the above you'll understand.

Anyway, as I say I'm now happy. The balance issue is still there but not as bad, whether thats Apple adjusting the third-speaker in some way or its my ears adjusting I'm not sure, but after going through 12 weeks of waiting on three machines I'm not going down that path again!

Now I'm really looking forward to the iMac, but reckon I'll have to wait a bit for that particular purchase.

Got a new G5 in Sept 2004, hooked it up to an old Apple 23 incher, then bought a mac mini for work last month and bought the new Dell 20 incher for it. Next I need to replace my aging Ti 500 PowerBook for when I go on the road. However, I am stubborn, if they do not increase the benchmarks by 15% I am not buying it. So until that time, I am awaiting rumors of PowerBooks. The new PowerBooks are over 140 on Benchmarks, this means it has to be over 160 for me to buy, also there must be no problems with it as I look on the net.
Hope I am not wishing to high, but I am probably doing just that, next bump will probably just be a G4 1.8 GHz or something like that, not buying it.

My current Mac is my NeXT Mac :D I fell in love with that OS back in the early 90's and now I finally have it in the form of OS X on my Power Mac Dual 2Ghz. Seriously though, I probably won't be buying a new box for a couple of years, since I just sprang for a 23" ACD. Who knows, a Dual 4Ghz with Cell? Oh, and it would have to connect to my satellite dish to pull down Apple's Hi-Def television content on demand

With any luck my next mac looks like it will be a G4 iMac...800mhz lol A friend of mine is thinking about selling it and I want to buy it from her, I REALLY love those G4 iMacs, they are so cool!
