...got a good deal on a "last unit" of a 2011 13" MBA and really like the screen resolution but still miss the 11" form factor...I'll gift this to a family member when the battery life on Haswell or after improves for the 11" units to the level of the current 13" units:D

11" here. Had a 13" laptop but wanted something smaller for travelling. Pretty much got tired of taking my tablet and laptop whenever I went somewhere so after much research I figured the 11" Air was the best thing to replace both. Small enough to whip out and watch movies on the plane yet still a fully functional computer for when I reach my destination. Have an i7 desktop so the MBA is mainly for surfing the internet in various locations around the house and for travel.

do you miss the added screen of the 13?

Purchased a 13" i5, 256gb, 4gb ram. It's the quickest or most instant computer I've ever used. It's replacing a custom gaming rig from 09', and a 2010 2.4ghz i5 MBP.

I've found that my primary need these days is portability, and I haven't actually used the desktop in months. Because of this I've ordered a 13" i7, 8gb ram. Returning the i5 because I figured I might as well max it out since it's going to be my primary.

Maxing out means even the SSD :p

Went with the 13". I currently have a 15" MBP, and I felt that the jump from that to a 11" would be a little too strong. Also, I have my iPad when I want to go ultra portable.

i was at my local apple store and they only had 2 11inch mba on display all the rest were 13s. also the retina mbp where in the high traffic area.

Just ordered my 11"/8gb/128 from Apple.com. The Apple stores in my area didn't have that configuration in stock currently, so I just decided to order online today.

My 2007 15" MacBook Pro is getting its last upgrade (since it meets the minimum specs to run ML) to Mountain Lion and then I'm giving it to my Dad.

Should have it between next Wednesday and Friday, I can't wait.

it seems to me that the 11 inch mba is almost like the 17 mbp a few years ago, a niche market. the 13 inch notebook has gone mainstream and is killing off the larger desktop replacements and replacing the smaller netbooks.

the ipad is similar in size to the 11 inch mba.

13.3''

I tried both and to be honest I "hate" the 11''. Several reasons:

-> The keys F1 F2 (...) are to small and to soft

-> The notebook is so small that is hard to write and on the break keep the hands on top of the pc, as I can do easily with the 13.3''.

-> 11'' smaller track pad area.

And finally, the screen area, can be the same, but is a huge difference in terns of comfort to see something in the 13'' or in the 11.''

Serious, I don't getter why the ppl who bought 11'' try so much to justify that 11'' is pretty much the same that 13, when is not.

However, despise this fact, the 11'' is also a lovely option, but not for me.

I just ordered an 11.6" i7 8GB ram 128 SSD Air. I'm coming from a 2010 13.3" Mbp. For those of you that returned your Air, to swap for a different model, what is apple's return policy on BTOs? Do you pay a restocking fee of any sorts? How many days do they give you to return it. I'm guessing I'll be happy with the 11", but I was just curious in case I decide to switch back to the 13". I still have a few days before I receive my Air.

I got the 2012 11' (i7, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD) and I love it - Its now my main machine.

For a few days I contemplated taking it back for a 13', but I decided the smaller screen is fine for my needs (web/email/media) and that the added portability make it the perfect grab and go computer.

I laugh at myself. Couldn't decide. Bought both. Use both :)

A couple of short years ago, even the 13 would seem like a feather to carry.

Already have a 2011 11" so I bought a 2012 13"

2.0GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
512GB Flash Storage
Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
VGA Adapter 065-C0T9

It sings, and is more than twice faster than my 11" 4 GB Memory, 1.86 GHZ dual core i7, 256 GB SSD

Though I wanted and got the 13" I didn't exactly have a choice in other Specs since I bought it off kjiji (sealed).

I was planning to upgrade the RAM like I always do but I was told you can longer (DIY) upgrade the RAM. I'm happy with 4GB, as well as the 128GB. I have a Dropbox account with 75GB, got it with my Samsung Galaxy S3 & hTc One X and soon will have a 1TB USB 3.0 Western Digital My Passport.

Best of both worlds...

At home my MBA 11" 2012 BTO (i7 / 8GB / 256 SSD) is a great desktop (w/ 27" Apple Cinema Display, Time Capsule for backup and an external HD for big files), and when I go out it is the ideal-sized computer I could ever need...

Cheers

Edric

So tempting if money permitted! Initially I wanted the 11 because I travel a lot... but then decided the extra 2 hour battery life was worth the extra size / weight. That was the determining factor for me.

Funny, I did the same after returning my Retina MacBook Pro. Quite a jump between machines, but the portability of the 11inch won out after spending some time with my wife's Air, I know I made the wrong choice with the Retina. Cheers!

Have a 2012 Pro 13 and an 2012 Air 11.

I only use my Air 11". The "old" MB Pro 13 stands collecting dust right now. I love the Air 11 inch. the battery is no problem, the form factor is amazing and I dont miss the DVD. Get the 11 and dont look back. :)

Very interesting thread - particularly to read the different use cases for 13" vs 11".

I currently have a rMBP and an 11" MBA...

I use to have a 13" MBP, but the screen real estate was too cramped for real work - not enough room for spreadsheets, not enough room for coding... I like it because of the small form factor for travel, meetings, and carrying to the coffee shop, but I just didn't like working on it.

I already knew I was going to switch to a 15" MBP - and the rMBP has been awesome for work... especially in 1920x1200 mode! And it works great for carrying to the coffee shop... but the 15" size is really not great for travel or carrying to meetings - it's not the weight, it's the size.

The 11" MBA fills the travel and daily carry-around laptop roll perfectly -- it has replaced my iPad for daily usage.... I can easily carry it around with me to meetings, while traveling - even packed it in my motorcycle for a 10 day western states tour.

I will say that if I had to choose just one, the 13 would be it.

That's the sweetest Mac in a long time. :)
