I’ve had my previous generation 2.4 GHz MBP for a few days now and I am very pleased. Picked it up from Amazon for $1444, no sales tax and free shipping. I also put 4 GB of RAM in there just because it was super cheap. I love it, best computer I’ve ever owned. Definitely the fastest computer I’ve ever owned! It came with a matte screen and I prefer glossy but matte aint bad and there are no dead pixels. Macworld’s benchmarks made me feel better about it too compared to the new ones – the older one is actually the same or better at almost everything they tried except gaming. Even then, it still beat the new one on a couple games!

The new ones have a nice glass screen but are not worth the extra $500. Now I’m reading about many dead/stuck pixels and dust under the glass which drove me nuts on my iPod Touch. I prefer the chiclet keyboard though, and the unibody made from a single block of aluminum sounds nice.. but saving $500 is nicer.

do you have a link or can you paste some results here?
because i saw benchmarks that say the old 2.4 is 8% slower than the new 2.4 MBP.
that is not noticable in real life anyway so i don't really care. the matte screen and the DVI and FW ports are the important things to me.

i bought the MBP classic 2.5GHz with 512MB 8600GT GPU because that was not listed as affected by the Nvidia GPU failure.

On my old Powerbook G4 i never got this keyboard marks on my screen so I guess i won't have that problem in my MBP either.

Are you sure that you're totally happy with the MBP 'Classic' and won't regret not going that extra $500? ;) :D

For what it's worth, I think that you have made the right decision. I went to look at the new ones and felt disappointed, so I'm sticking with my 'Classic" for now. :)

A keyboard is not worth $500 to me and the matte screen is surprisingly very crisp. Coming from a plastic 13" Macbook, the MacBook Pro has much better colors and a brighter screen but that probably has nothing to do with matte/glossy. And it might not be made from a "brick" but it is still sleak-looking aluminum. I like. Very much!

Weird, my 1.67 had them (and my screen was replaced a year and a half ago). I wonder if, much like the TiBooks, that tends to happen if you pick it up from the center with one hand; as opposed to using both hands and grasping it from the sides.

Regadless its one more personal preference reasons why some prefer the old design to the new one.

Should I be worried about the defective GPU? I really love my MBP and want it to last a long time without having to be sent out for repair :(

Scroll down a little. There aren't a whole lot of benchmarks for the new 2.4 out there.

Gaming Benchmarks

And finally,

http://www.macworld.com/article/136279/2008/10/macbookpro_benchmarks.html

That last one does show some improvements on the new models (as there should be!). Perhaps the new chipset is holding it back somewhat, but at least for the 13" Macbook is it a pretty big step forward.

I feel very happy with my early 2008 MBP with a matte display. I love the new one too, but don't want the mega reflections brought about by the glass. Other than that, I love it, but it really isn't that much different from the one I'm using so I can't justify getting it.

Uhm... I don't see any Macbook Pro Classic benchmarks there. it's all for the old macbook and one new macbook pro.

I'm totally happy with my March 2008 Penryn MPB. Although I generally find the latest-and-greatest versions of most products seductive, and I drool over magazines and web sites featuring electronic toys (I have a 65" rear-projection HDTV from 2004, but I scour reviews of 1080P pojectors because a 120" screen would be cooler), I know from long experience that buying the latest and greatest provides only a temporary fix until the next latest and greatest comes out. So now I wait for years before I upgrade equipment. That said, the new MPB isn't causing me to salivate. There's no "gotta have" feature that makes me wish that I'd limped along for another seven months with my (heavily upgraded) June 2000 G4 Sawtooth.

I'll add that I spent years in the "Why doesn't Apple make an affordable mid-range tower, like the entry-level G4 Sawtooth?" camp. I finally got tired of waiting. I couldn't justify the cost of a Mac Pro, but I did talk myself into a MBP. I got a 13-port USB hub for the ridiculous number of peripherals I have, and it's great -- it serves the same function as docking station, and it's almost as easy to use when I want to go portable.

Just got the old model!

I just got the old 15.4" model, 2.5Ghz Penryn, 4 Gb RAM.:D
It's a great price now, AND i can still use my 23" ACD without a bloody 99,- adapter, and i have a matte screen (a must have for me).
Oh, and it does'nt look like a 15 inch macbook.

(just keeping my fingers crossed the bloody NVIDIA GT 8600 does'nt die on me)
