True, but just heavy and not near as portable enough.

You buy a laptop to be portable, and not to be used as your main computer. But some prefer to use it that way.

Not everyone. They buy because laptops because they want a desktop replacement. One with thernet port to a dvd rom. Just because some don't value a dvd that doesn't mean the next person doesn't. As much as I like the MBA, my MBP is still a better value and more powerful.

Seriously though. Does majority of computer user really even need this much computing power?

If you are not a multimedia developer, I think MBA would suffice.(also not a gamer but then why would you want to game on macbook anything anyway. Serious games anyway)
It depends on your usage. The MacBook Air certainly has it's purpose in the market.

For someone who is just browsing the internet, checking their e-mail, listening to music and performing other tasks that aren't very processor intensive then it's an excellent choice because of it's weight and smaller footprint.

For someone looking to do a lot of heavy compiling in Xcode, editing movies in Final Cut Pro, etc there are drawbacks. The processor isn't as fast, so you will wind up spending more time waiting for your tasks to complete.

There are also certain features that some people can't live without: the backlit keyboard for example, or the convenience of not having to drag an external SuperDrive around with them. Some people need connections such as FireWire, which are only available on the MacBook Pro. It comes down to an individual's needs, all three of the MacBook models are great choices, it just depends on how you use your computer.

I'm not. My 15-inch MacBook Pro does everything that I need it to and offers a backlit keyboard and a higher screen resolution; it also provides me with the capability to upgrade both the memory and the hard disk down the road where as the MacBook Air isn't upgradable.

+1, Well said.

No YOU bought it to be portable and not your main computer. There is no reason it cant be a main computer. iMacs are just MacBook Pro's with a bigger screen and a 3.5in HDD.

I have an SSD, SandyBridge i7, 6750 GPU and 500GB HDD(I plan to move to a 1TB). What more could I hope for in a desktop? Unless I have a use for dual GPU or over 8GB of RAM then what reason should I need a desktop?

I go home, plug in a Time Machine drive and and external display. Turn on my Bluetooth KB and mouse and work with both screens. A desktop would just add clutter and create the problem of having to share files between them.

Well, you're asking the people who opted to buy the pro. So most of us do have good reasons for needing the extra power. I think you could probably find more regular MacBook users who are wanting to make the switch to Air.

Been in the IT field for 25 years. Most people buy laptops to be portable. They usually have a desktop at home for more comfortable solution and power to do the big work as well. That is the way it is and the way it has been. Why buy a desktop replacement seriously in a laptop if it's just going to sit there. Some are so heavy 20lb it's unreal.

Then you should know times are changing and people don't always want a desktop as their main computer. I have a desktop and it just sits there. I never use it as I use the laptops for my main computer.

Congratulations.

This is dated. Notebooks have outsold desktops since 2003. Many households have a notebook as their only computer.

Yep. Sold my 2010 model for a MBA when released.

What did you use your MBP for, was it for casual stuff or intense use like video/photo editing? Because if it's for casual use then then MBA is better. But we all know even the new MBA won't be close to the capabilities of the MBP it's power is unrivaled in the notebook world!

Email, browsing the web, youtube, importing Photos and editing them from my D7000. Work, Remote Desktop, VPN, Outlook w/exchange. It worked all fine for that and so will the MBA especially with the new processor.

I have a PC, but haven't used it for photo editing anymore because the software MAC has seems to work better and easier.

Congratulations.

^^ That is only because most can't afford two computers or have no reason to have two. Desktop PC's will always be more powerful than laptops and be used for the big work. Reason why I have one for GAMING, doing HD Video editing, etc.

Yeh so my theory was correct, you use it for casual things and most of the things you mentioned an iPad 2 can do apart from the importing photos and editing. So yes the MBA is a good substitue for your MBP. Also like you say the Mac OS is far superior to Windows OS.

There's no way i'll give up an AMD 6750 for an HD3000 and a non-backlit KB.

I would really have to disagree with you. Most people these days do not own a desktop PC and instead use a laptop as their main computer, yes lots of us on these forums probably do have a desktop and a laptop but we are not your average consumer :p

Is it definite that they will not add a backlit KB to the MBA refresh?

That may be a deciding factor for myself, between the 13" MBP and 13" MBA. My 2.33 C2D MBP has seen better days, but I could still use it as a server, or for some other needs.

I'd really like the sleekness of the MBA though. I will definitely get a dock and larger monitor, external keyboard for either the MBP or MBA.

I haven't seen one but you mentioned a dock for the MBA? Do they have one?

And most people desktops are currently slower than current laptops. Also a desktop replacement is NOT 20lbs. I built a new desktop less than a year ago and this 15in MacBook Pro is faster than the CPU, faster RAM, and has room for all my files. The only place there is any compromise is that I traded a 6850 GPU for a 6750 GPU. It also weighs well under 20lbs. Even the 17in which some might call a DTR is well under 20lbs.

Heck dual GPU laptops are not even over 10lbs.

It seems your opinions are based on things from 2001, or maybe even 1986 when you started IT.

The only reason to have a desktop over a laptop for home use anymore is if you need:
Multiple terabytes of space
over 8GB of RAM
Dual GPU or more
over 4 core CPU
You cant afford a laptop(which would negate all argument because if you can't afford a laptop, you can't afford to have both.)

No it's not, but i have a niggling feeling backlit KBs will be reserved as a selling point for the 13" MBPs

I think he means laptop stands

Especially for a girl like you, a MBA would be perfect.

They are just as fast as the MBP line for all normal tasks, sometimes snappier somehow...

They are so powerful and so thin and so nice to snuggle with in bed...

i made this table hope it solve problems :)

Actually they are. Dell XPS M1730 was around 16 lb. I owned one. I also know someone with a Sager that is near the same weight. Those are desktop replacement 17" laptops with dual video cards, dual HD's, etc.
