I haven't seen one but you mentioned a dock for the MBA? Do they have one?

I think he means laptop stands

It's more of a laptop stand, than the Henge Docks made for Macbook Pros, but it does organize your cables a bit, too. I think it also has one large proprietary cable that "squids" out to the other connections? I'm not sure:

BookArc for Air

They make one for the Pros, too.

And I've heard the current MBAs have no problem doing Graphic/Web Design with Photoshop CS. I'm sure it'd only get better with the SB chips. GarageBand/guitar recording and Adobe CS are the heaviest apps I'll use/need, so MBA should be able to make the cut--especially if my 2.33 C2D can do it now.

Been in the IT field for 25 years. Most people buy laptops to be portable. They usually have a desktop at home for more comfortable solution and power to do the big work as well. That is the way it is and the way it has been. Why buy a desktop replacement seriously in a laptop if it's just going to sit there. Some are so heavy 20lb it's unreal.

This is dated. Notebooks have outsold desktops since 2003. Many households have a notebook as their only computer.

^^ That is only because most can't afford two computers or have no reason to have two. Desktop PC's will always be more powerful than laptops and be used for the big work. Reason why I have one for GAMING, doing HD Video editing, etc.

So we went form MOST people have a desktop to MOST people only have a notebook because they cannot afford both.

MOST people do not do intensive video editing and most people game on consoles. MOST people do not need a desktop these days unless they want a large screen, and these days it is easy to hook up a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse.

What works for you is an observation, not a fact.

The 8,2 MacBook Pro is plenty capable of doing anything I throw at it. I already have a Mac Pro, but I likely will not refresh it going forward because Thunderbolt will finally open the gates to proper secondary storage.

Which one is supposed to be more powerful? I was planning on buying a MBP around August for school and I wanted an i7 13", but I keep hearing all this talk about the new MBAs. I know theyre not out yet but when is it rumored to be released? Should I get it instead of a MBP? Is it more powerful? I know they have SSDs so that will make em quicker than the MBPs HDDs but I'm still kinda hesitant to buy one cuz I want a powerhouse kick ass laptop and not a watered down MBP that's thinner (which is what they kind of are at the moment).

What do you think I should buy?

Well the MBP. You said so yourself you want a powerhouse. The MBA isn't more powerful. Yes it's thinner and has a faster hard drive. But the processor isn't faster than the MBP. Not at all!

Seriously though. Does majority of computer user really even need this much computing power?

If you are not a multimedia developer, I think MBA would suffice.(also not a gamer but then why would you want to game on macbook anything anyway. Serious games anyway)

I use my mbp for gaming?? it does just fine...

No way. I like my GPU and CPU power way too much. I'm also fine with carrying around my ~6 pound aluminium block and an iPad. xD

I game too.

But if anyone wants to buy a MBA buy a MBA (I am), to replace it with your MBP that's up you. It's not replacing my MBP, it's complimenting it :apple::apple:

I'm considering a MacBook Air to complement my MacBook Pro, but I won't be replacing the latter. I tried this before (sold MacBook Pro to get a MacBook Air), but have come back and enjoyed it since. I still have a older 13" MacBook Air, but it's far too weak and it doesn't have enough RAM.

_Hell no_, I absolutely love my 2011 17" MBP. That said there's at least a 50/50 chance that I'll buy a 2011 11" MBA for carrying around with me pretty much everywhere.

I feel the MBA, with an i5 or i7, will be able to perform very well as a web/graphic design machine. Maybe even some guitar recording. Probably not crazy video editing--maybe some basic iPhone 720p quality videos. But I don't see why it wouldn't? Yes, it'd be only dual core (as is the 13" MBP)...but my 4.5 year old 2.33 C2D MBP is also dual core, and I'd imagine the MBA will have to be more powerful than that!

But it's still a very tough decision. I will have to check them out in person at th store, but I can make a decision.

I just wish the 13" MBP would be quad-core. Is it a physical limitation, or do they just not want to offer the same number of cores on all the MBP lines thus to create tiers and price points?

Well ****, I wish I had enough money to buy a macbook let alone a new MBA to "compliment" my MBP lol. Screw being a college student in this economy.

As for gaming, I'm pretty sure most MBPs can run many of the most popular games on at least medium. Especially the classics like fallout 3, although you would need a windows license but who doesn't have at least some copy of xp lying around?

I'm pretty sure it's just a tier and price thing. If apple wanted they'd probably already have quad cores in ipods haha

I was thinking about getting an air when I got my new computer that much. I went with the 13" MBP and now I'm much happier that I did. I realized that I use too many processor intensive applications at one time for the MBA to handle. It would hate me haha. After a few refreshes though, maybe it'll be in the cards :)

One can only hope, right?

The issue is, I'm hearing XP and Vista aren't supported (at least not with drivers) on the most recent MBPs. Depressing, since I wouldn't dare run anything higher than Vista - 7's burned me before.

It honestly depends on the specs of the new Air and common opinions of them. I may go with a 13" Air over a 13" Pro if they're (at least nearly) comparable machines, though - 1440x900 vs. 1280x800 is a no-brainer. (I could get by with 1280x800 - I'm surviving on 1024x768, even. I just prefer having a bigger space to work with.)

Of course, if the Air only gets i3s... I'm sticking with the MBP.

Take this with a grain of salt, really - this is from someone who's still on an iBook G4 and is looking at getting an Intel machine in the near future, but still needs to see what's happening with the other lines before making a decision instead of someone looking to replace an MBP with an MBA.

hmm, maybe an 11" air as an "accessory" to my 17" pro...:D

I'm tempted to get something like that too...

My 13" MBA was stolen about 4 weeks ago. I got an i7 13" MBP as a replacement. There is nothing coming in the new Air that would make me want to go back. I travel for work on the airlines. The Air was a pain to use with the superdrive. I got by without the lighted keyboard but now I couldn't. I put an Intel SSD in the MBP and other than the boot up (~20 sec), it flies. Now, talk about the new 13" MBP that I just heard about today. Would I upgrade to that? Depends....

Yes,if you require a Superdrive, I can understand your hesitation...

Now, I have no real need for one. I don't burn CDs/DVDs, nor do I watch movies from optical media. Ripping the occasional CD--eh, maybe...or burning a CD for a sibling/friend--also another maybe. But with bandwidth speeds increasing, as well as external drives and car stereos with USB/flash card ports on them, the need for optical drives is becoming less necessary.

Also, I'll probably keep my 15" MBP if I really need to burn/rip something.

And I'd be curious if I needed a backlit keyboard. Is it possible to fit the 13" MBP's keyboard onto the 13" MBA? Do a bit of a "retrofit" or "hack" for backlighting?

Why did you buy the MacBook Pro in the first place, then?

I got started w/ the whole apple thing w/ 2009 late macbook that I bought for my wife. I instantly loved the portability and all the super neat features that osx gives you on extremely portable device.
Even though I already have laptop from work which I connect to big monitor for work purpose, I find myself gravitating towards mb every chance I get. After about 6 month of huge usage of wife's MB, I decided to give myself a treat on next mbp refresh.

Rewind to 2011 march(or was it april), I bought the 15 mbp after long wait, anticipation is through the roof.
After spending about $2100 bucks(More memory, cover and what not), I find myself baby'ing this thing way too much.
Not only that, I find 15 laptop w/ high res , hard to use in bed and keep using MB.

The other problem is, I somehow dreamed of being able to do all my work on laptop away from desk. I find that no matter what kind of laptop you have, you will never beat big external monitor and finding myself continuing to come back to my desk to get serious work done.

Well, It's not right or wrong but this is my story of how I ended up here.

not me since we don't even know what the 2011 MBA is going to have.

If it has what I'm looking for I am considering selling the MBP and going with an air/imac combo.

For serious work I went to BestBuy and got a great looking 24" monitor on special for < $100.00 and hooked up to my 13" MBP, which I leave on my desk in Nashville. On the plane or at a client's facility the laptop is great.
