2. In retail environments it allows people to see the difference between a retina display and a regular display. They will 99% of the time buy a retina equipped device afterward.

No offense but I'm trying to figure out your logic on this one and I'm getting twisted up...

Apple kept around a lone non-retina ipad model when all the others moved to retina so that people would buy a retina device? Wouldn't just getting rid of the non-retina model accomplish the same result? :D

Hmm, haven't really paid much attention but does Apple still even have iPad 2's on display? Last time I went, there were a bunch or iPad 4's and Mini's but I don't recall seeing iPad 2's. Of course, can't really tell the difference between a 2 and a 4 from afar.

You can get Apple Certified refurbs that have new shells, new battery, same 1-year warranty and 90-day technical support for around $400 or less.

16GB
iPad 2 WiFi: $319
iPad 2 WiFi+3G: $349
iPad 3 WiFi: $359
iPad 3 WiFi+4G: $409
iPad 4 WiFi: $379

For individuals, I think going refurb is the better route. For large corporate deployment, 20% savings with an iPad 2 makes it an obvious choice.

And what's your point? Most people just walk into an Apple store if they want an iPad. They don't go scouring the web to find deals.

I think people on this forum lose perspective on Apple's primary audience.

Yes, I'm quite aware. From my earlier post:
I doubt my grandma would be comfortable buying from eBay or Craigslist. Is the iPad 2 a bad deal? By today's standards, yes. However, the people who are considering buying one likely don't know any better and are at the mercy of the sales rep at Best Buy, Apple Store, etc.

If someone asks me about buying an older generation iPad, I usually steer them towards the refurb section on Apple's online store. However, I realize there are quite a number of folks who just walk into an Apple Store and buy what's available.

Besides, your question was why it's not worth $400. The reason I think it's not worth $400 is because if you go refurb, you can get either a better device for around the same price or save an additional $80 on an iPad 2 WiFi.

Love the elitist attitude. What you call "people who don't know any better" I call "people who don't care".

Nope. There is a whole group of people who only look at price tag and screen size and apple logo and they just assume one iPad is as good as the next.

Why do people think that they know more about how to price products than the company making billions of dollars on them?

Just because you're a big, bad power user who couldn't POSSIBLY be seen with such an ARCHAIC device (it doesn't even have a RETINA display), doesn't mean a grandma who is intrigued by having an iPad cares.

Believe it or not, Apple knows what they're doing.

Hang on.

There is always going to be someone going into the apple store to buy a gift for someone, and naturally they will purchase the cheaper product. I just hate to be that kid opening my Xmas present cause grandma got me an iPad .

And if the grandma is buying one for herself, does not retina make better sense with her already bad eyesight ?

Fact is, it's kinda criminal the iPad 2 is still around, my view is that they will still sell but I feel sorry for the suckers buying it cause they do not understand what an extra $100 gets them.

Yes apple know exactly what they are doing, profiteering from the ones that probably know about tech the least.

Exactly. These are the individuals that will purchase the iPad 2.

Why is the iPad 2 not worth $400? I'm using a mini which is basically the iPad 2 scaled down. Since it doesn't have a retina screen, it's performance is pretty decent. The mini now goes for $299... the iPad 2 for $399. I don't see the problem. Is the first-generation mini not worth $299?

Hang on, the amount you paid out people on this thread , and you do not own an iPad 2....... I'm shocked!!!

Sounds like you love it, Xmas present maybe? Write to Santa

Anybody? I mean seriously, what the hell was apple thinking with this?

Ipad 2 (released 2011) 400$
ipad air (released 2013) 500$
price difference (you're welcome): 100$

where the hell is logic in this? Its like they dont even want to sell the remaining ipads 2...

So my question is this: Do we have anybody around here who actually bought a new ipad 2 in the last week or two?

people who are ipad fanatics aren't going to be buying an iPad 2. But people on a budget who want a full size iPad will buy it up and still do...hence why it's still around.

If everyone had the same thought as you...the iPad 2 would have been dead awhile ago. Most people don't care about the screen or that it's slightly thinner. They see a $100 discount

Wow, you have some cr@ppy relatives. j/k :D

More than likely, "grandma" will seek the advice of a son or daughter or other person to assist with purchasing the appropriate version.

Apple store also have all these people in blue shirts ready to help someone select the right product.

Either way, pretty unlikely "example" -- especially compared the the small businesses and so forth which still use ipad2's for kioks/POS/etc.

BTW - have you confirmed the ipad2 is actually on display at Apple stores? I haven't been lately so I haven't looked.

Could be worse I guess, Aunt Clara might send you pink bunny rabbit pajamas instead of an ipad2.

I'll be going to the Apple Store later to pick up a case. I'm actually quite curious to see if there are still any iPad 2's on display. At least now, it's easy to tell the iPad 2 apart from the Air. :)

Hey, I like my pink bunny rabbit pajamas! :p

Just got back from the Apple Store. All the iPads on display are either Air or Mini. They had iPad 2's glued to plexiglass but they're locked down and are only there as a sort of kiosk for other products.

As stated, enterprises, education, small business kiosks, etc. Between the price savings and the compatibility with existing 30-pin accessories (point of sale devices, custom business devices that are 30-pin, etc.) there are tons of places where a fancier model would provide no return on investment AT ALL and in fact may create new difficulties. Hell, our company still makes millions from computing systems running on DOS!!

Think of this as Apple's nod to maintaining compatibility in the business world. Businesses can't move at the pace that Apple does.
