Those maps are amazingly detailed. Does anybody know of a site with maps that detailed for the Los Angeles area fires?

Those are really impressive maps. Thank you for posting the link voicegy. I hope that you and your family are safe, acually all forum members in the area.

In case people didn't hear and were still worried about us: All southern California fires were 100% contained as of yesterday. Now the insurance companies get to work.

743,000 acres, which is approximately the size of Rhode Island (depending on how much water area in Rhode Island you count)

3,500 homes destroyed

By rehabilitating some of the critical areas of fire-burned land (using mulch, sandbags, or directing runoff), officials hope to lessen the impact of the floods and mudslides that will occur from the next rainfall.

Yeah, we're headed for some rain soon, but the heaviest precip usually holds off until Feb (or at least it has my last 5 years here). Hopefully that will give things time to recuperate somewhat...

None of the fires came close to my house (La Jolla) but pretty damn scary. Sun was red for the first couple days and the ash and smoke destroyed my lungs. No school for a whole week though, really awesome. Felt so weird to be back at school after a week at home though.

Thank you for the update Doctor Q. That is great news. I hope that all you will continue to occur no major damage. How is your health?

Surprisingly, if you are in the area of a major fire, the safest place for your lungs is near the fire, not a mile or a few miles away. This is because the further you get from the fire, the finer the ash particles floating in the air will be, making it harder for your body to filter them out. Once you get far enough away, of course, you are safe again.

The Air in So. Cal The Week of the Fire

A typical day in San Diego County would show an "air pollution index" of 15-20 micrograms per cubic meter. An unhealthy day would be 40-65 micrograms per cubic meter. On the first Monday of the week of the fire, in Escondido (a suburb of San Diego,) it registered at 90 micrograms per cubic meter.

Air monitoring stations in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas had readings upwards of three times the maximum allowable standard for particulate matter.

Air Quality Index levels at times exceeded 200 (very unhealthful) in San Bernardino and between 150 and 200 (unhealthy) in many other Southern CA locations.

Road trip!

Since the air is still bad here, we should all take Backtothemac (in Alabama) and Stelliform (in Louisiana) up on their offers to house us and entertain us until its safe to come back to California. I'll pick up Rower_CPU, 3rdpath, G5orbust, DreaminDirector, jadariv, etoiles, mc68k, rt_brained, voicegy, and mms tomorrow morning and we'll be there in no time!

Right on! I'm packed and ready...to HECK with my 8:00 a.m. meeting!:D

Nature wasn't done with us. Southern California had a huge rainstorm today. Not just thunder and lightning, but 5 inches of rain in 2 hours in parts of Los Angeles. Many cars were stuck in flooded areas. Up in the mountains, Lake Arrowhead was on fire 2 weeks ago; today it had a steady snowstorm all day, with 4-8 inches expected overnight tonite. If the hills don't wash away in mudslides, maybe vacationers will return to what's left of the mountain resorts.

Minimal mudslides here, but if the rain keeps up I'm sure there'll be more.

If it stops now, we might have just enough to start some new growth and shore up the hills a little.

Let's be entrepreneurial and find a way to make mudslide riding the newest California sport. It's no crazier than some of the others, like street luge. I'm sure there's plenty of money to be made if we do this right. I'll take the L.A. county franchise, and you can have the San Diego county franchise, Rower_CPU. Now we need a web site (mudslideriding.com happens to be available), a sponsor (Harvey Mudd College?), Internet word of mouth (a tie-in to a multiuser dungeon?), a celebrity spokesperson (Pikabo Street?), and some carefully planted TV stories. And when our customers are injured, we'll have wdlove standing by to fix 'em right up.

Doctor Q & Rower_CPU sounds like you have quite a project. I agree with all the suggestions proposed, should be very successful. Please keep us informed of you progress.

Thank you for the smile.

I hope that neither of you are suffering any damage from the storm.
