Stealing data is a new one I had not heard of before. Sooooo, I would say the OP shouldn't even get a backdate on a plan, but they can try. $50 isn't that much, that's two months of a real data plan on a tier 1 carrier.

I really don't know why people on this forum have such a holier-than-thou attitude.

Did the guy "steal" internet? Debatable; technically if the access was there and he didn't "hack" anything, then he didn't steal it. It's the same with open WiFi - until it's "secured" it's like leaving a door open. Regardless, that's not the point and I will not be debating this part with anyone who tries to troll it since it's a matter of opinion.

The point is that people should RESPECT each other. Stop hiding behind your keyboards and monitors and at least treat each other with a bit of respect. Explain to the guy why you won't help him, why you think it's stealing or at best unauthorized use, and then tell him why you think that he should be thankful for only being charged on a bill instead of being charged with all these other things. Spell it out, but don't be frickin' rude. Maybe he never considered the other side of it? Maybe he thought it was part of the other plan? Maybe? Just because you never thought of it that way doesn't make him an idiot, hippie, or anything else you can come up with that is as far as you know unjust.

As much as you people sit here and lecture him on ethics, perhaps you should look in the mirror and rethink how you treat people as well.

A little basic human respect goes a long way sometimes. Remember, what you write on the internet defines you forever since it never gets deleted.

EDIT: Only on this forum could I get voted down for asking people to respect each other. Says a lot about this group of people who claim to be so enlightened.

Actually, it's been known that T-mobile users with an unlimited sms plan can access data with the internet2.voicestream.com apn. I'm having a hard time seeing how that's similar to buying things with a stolen credit card.

Again I ask: If you guys noticed that you were going over on your minutes every month but weren't getting charged for it, would you call up T-mobile and tell them about it?

I see no difference between that and my situation, but I don't know why I'm posting in here since clearly I'm talking to the most angelic people on Earth...

The difference might be that we are already paying for our minutes. You were not paying for any data at all. You were using data for 2 years and finally got a bill of only $50 dollars and then come and complain about it.

well, if you used the data not sure how you can argue against paying for it. if your sister really hasn't used it then you need to call and tell them that.

if there was a way for me to get free data i can't say i wouldn't try it but i certainly would be in no position to complain if i started getting charged for it.

i am also curious as to how many of these people who think you're evil justify mywi and other free tethering apps...

Sorry, but I don't feel like I disrespected anyone. I didn't call anyone names, tell them they were evil, etc. etc. I DID say that it was stealing, and that I thought T-Mobile should have charged him more. That's my opinion, and that's what you tend to get on message boards like this.

When he first posted, he basically asked us if we thought he should lie about why he used so much data. Even after he got busted for using data when he wasn't supposed to, he wanted to know if he could try to lie to get out of paying the bill, and if he'd still be able to find a way to get it for free afterwards. That leads me to believe that he knew what he was doing was wrong (in both my mind and, apparently, T-Mobile's). So why should I try to baby him and not express my opinion? If he'd said he accidentally used data and was now getting charged for it, my answer would have been different. But it very obviously wasn't an accident. I don't see how stating my opinion was disrespectful, just because it wasn't what he wanted to hear.

Why should we respect someone that knew he was stealing data and now is complaining about getting charged for it?

You don't have to "hack" anything to steal something.

If a car is sitting in a parking lot with the keys in it, and you take it. It's still stealing.

If I leave my window open at my house, it's not an invitation.

Geez, even i was paying the then going rate of $5.99 to use EDGE. It has gone up since then. Id say there is no chance of you getting it for free again.

Pay the bill and then get the $9.99 data fee they have. If you dont want to do that then i guess you dont need to have data on your phone.

I will be trolling.

A long time ago I used to be a cashier at Home Depot and this one time I had an accident with my register. It was approaching closing time and I had 1 customer in line and I ran out of change (quarters, dimes and nickels), no one was able to walk over to me to give me change so I had to walk over to my Head Cashier, I asked him if he minded, he said no. I was not gone longer than a minute and when I returned my register drawer was open and my screen turned off.

In that moment that I walked away my register had crashed. I knew I owed the customer $0.45 so I gave it to him and he was able to leave, but quickly after my register had to be counted and the camera had to be viewed. It was confirmed that all the money was still their and the customer did not come in contact with my register, it was all an unfortunate accident.

This guy was standing within arms length of my register and TECHNICALLY had ACCESS to over $500 without any HACKS or tricks (or anybody watching), he was about 15ft away from the door and we didn't have security (so it was UNSECURED).

What stopped him from taking that money?

The access and opportunity was available, I would not have been fired because the register crashed (not my fault) and Home Depot would not have gone bankrupt for that amount of money missing.

So what stopped him?

You didn't get "socked with data charges". You got billed for data you've been using for free. Pay up.

Then I must be dreaming because I swear I saw all of those things.

You didn't?
