I drink diet (and actually am drinking a lot less soda recently than I had been), but... it always amazes me how many grams of sugar fit inside a regular coke. It seems like the liquid should not be able to absorb that much. But I guess HFCS maybe saturates higher than cane sugar?

I'm enjoying a cup of tea this morning that's about the size (maybe a tad less) than a soda (it's a big mug). I put 1 teaspoon of sugar (about 5 grams) in, and it's sweet enough, bordering on too sweet. I know this is a matter of taste, but I certainly can't imagine putting 8 or more teaspoons in my tea (which is about what's in a coke).

The reason that so much sugar goes into a Coke (as with any soda) is to counteract the flavor of the acidity. Coca-Cola is nearly as acidic as lemon juice due to the citrus oils that are in it. It is also worth noting that fruit juice is not any better either in terms of sugar content or acidity.

I heard something similar from a buddy of mine who's heavily into working out and training, etc. We're supposed to think that fruit juice is better for us than something like soda since it's all natural and whatnot, but that's not necessarily the case. His beverages of choice, especially after a session, were either water, or if he wanted something with taste, non-fat chocolate milk.

I thought it was more to counteract the bitterness of the carbonated water. Ever drink a Perrier or plain carbonated water? Bleah. You'd need tons of sugar to sweeten that up.

I switched to diet soft drinks for a year and with no other changes in eating or lifestyle habits, my doctor could immediately tell I looked leaner and healthier. I lost 8 pounds on that one change alone.

Yes, I realize diet soft drinks are probably just as bad, sugar content notwithstanding.

I suppose we should all become water drinking, vegans. That seems to be there only sure way to avoid all that is evil in the world of food. All sitting at home doing nothing all, except maybe a little exercise, drinking a little water and eating a few veggies... thats what we should be doing to live a healthy, safe life

I know you are being sarcastic, but I'm not sure how much...

When it comes to food, moderation is the key. You can eat stuff that is bad for you, but the biggest problem is when our culture is full of soda and fast food that it becomes all we eat.

One pound of fat is equal to about 3,500 calories. That can be eaten very easily over the course of a day, but it is a ton of work to burn off.

Now I don't feel so guilty putting 4 sugars in my coffeee ... THANKS! :D

Amen! I drink coffee as opposed to soda, and like it light and sweet.....although I've always known it has a LOT less sugar in it than any kind of soda (diet excepted, obviously, although that has its own issues).

No, we should apparently stick our heads in the sand and be oblivious to what's in our food and drink

That's a really great way to trick yourself into not thinking your Mickey D's, pizza, and soda diet really isn't that bad for you.

IIRC, when they used cane sugar they had to use more, because gram for gram it's not as sweet as HFCS. The upshot is that HFCS keeps the calorie count under control.

I say stick to diet. I love artificial sweeteners.

I love the taste of Diet Coke...pity that the artificial sweeteners also are dreadful for your body...

What's the deal with juices being bad? I always thought fruit juices were good for you . It says it gives you 2 servings of fruit in one cup. Not a bad deal to me.
Btw, I usually stick to water, milk, soy milk, veggie juice and fruit juice. I drink soda maybe once every month or two.

The problem with juice is that most people drink more than a cup of juice. One cup is not that much and an average glass holds about 1.5 - 2 cups. If you drink two glasses of say orange juice, that's the same as eating almost 8 oranges, only in juice form it doesn't seem like that much. It's not so much that it's "bad" for you, but you end up really packing in the calories.

I drink two Dr. Pepper's a day, and I'm happy with it. I used to drink diet, but my parents are all freaked out about the "aspartame causes cancer" thing.

Sugar is helpful for me. If I have a Dr. Pepper in the morning, I can concentrate better. It doesn't make me hyper because I'm usually sluggish in the mornings.

That's a lot of sugar! Yeah that aspartame is bad (it scares the crap out of me) but with that much sugar you are just asking for diabetes when you get older!

There IS a lot of good to be said for fruit juice, but most fruit juices have at least as much added sugar as soda. Tree Top brand apple juice has twenty-nine grams of sugar per ten fluid ounces; Dr. Pepper has forty grams of sugar per twelve fluid ounces. That apple juice also has NO added sugar and is 100% juice from concentrate. It is also worth noting that there are ten grams of carbohydrates in the juice in addition to the sugar.

The vast majority of the fruit juice that we drink from bottles has added sugar on top of what is naturally in the fruit. While fruit juice may indeed give you more nutrients than the same volume of soda, there is roughly the same number of calories and most of it is in the form of simple carbohydrates. If you drink a lot of soda and decide to switch to fruit juice, you are drinking the same calories and have the same increased risk for diabetes.

There is also a danger to drinking fruit juice in that you get so many calories, but it's in liquid form and therefore it does not fill you up. This is similar to the fact that your twenty-ounce white mocha at Starbucks has over five hundred calories. But you're not going to notice, because most of it leaves your stomach in less than thirty minutes. I would rather eat whole fruit than drink fruit juice for that reason; I may get the same number of calories, but at least I have something in my stomach preventing me from gorging on something else.

For my part, I drink almost exclusively water. I drink the occasional soda, but I have to be careful to eat something with it when I do; I go on sugar crashes easily because I'm not used to drinking a lot of soda or eating a lot of candy.

I will also say this: Coca-Cola tastes WAY better in Europe than in the U.S. I hear that it's because they use actual sucrose in Europe and not high fructose corn syrup. Can any of our friends across the pond confirm this?

Once you stop drinking soda, tea, anything that is sugar based, and start drinking water, you realize just how much of a waste it is to drink anything but water.

The more you drink water, the less you want to drink anything else, and you actually begin to crave water. It is an awesome feeling/sensation :)

So true!

The only time I enjoy drinking pop is at restaurants, before I eat my meal. That's it really. Oh, and I only like clear pops (like Sprite, but not Coke).

But I probably drink 6 large glasses of water with lemon a day and I wouldn't want anything else.

Ok, that is it. I'm completely done with Coke. It's one of my favourite drinks, but after this thread, I'm disgusted with Coke and will never drink it again.

I'm switching to Pepsi.
