yes, I have to add that my problems were NOT fixed, I rebooted, ran SU and didnt see the problem, posted here that it was fixed, now its back, its something to do with the HP drivers, not SU, that is my hunch

Son of a gun!

I have a minor problem with the Software Update feature. While it works fine manually it won't check for updates automatically. For example, changing between Daily, Weekly, and Monthly does nothing. The Last checked time and date always show the last time I did a manual update.
You can ignore my post on the first page because the Software Update mysteriously started working again Wednesday night. (It automatically downloaded the RAW compatibility update 2.7, for example.) I have no idea what could have happened.

Software update issues

Hey all, there's a lot of good info here, I'm glad I joined. I hope this goes in the right spot being a newbie and all :D

I am running a Imac 5,1 Mac OSX, Ver. 10.5 and also have a software update issue. The update will download properly but when it comes to installing, the blue bar gets stuck at about 9mm long or so and stays there no matter how long I leave it. Terminal also seems to do the same thing however there's no way to tell the progress it's making (or not making as near as I can tell)
This is what I've done so far (from previous posts):

Caches cleared
Permissions repaired
Update pref's deleted
Disk utility verified
Sudo software update in terminal sticks on install as well

I assume the update shouldn't have to install for days or anything?

So I may be at the point to have to reinstall the system but I thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone has any other ideas first.
Love the Mac, don't love the glitches :)

This solved it for me

This solved it for me:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/439368/

I had to disable SPI in my router settings.

Have a look to see if your router is listed as a likely problem:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stateful_Packet_Inspection

Mine is a Netgear WGR614 (v7)

I was able to download the update but it said it was corrupt when I tried to install it, now I have no problems and can update properly.

(Btw, this also caused issues with updating my PS3 Firmware)

Hope this helps.

Neil.

Thank you indeed....

Yes.... it works, until now.... 2010-04-30!!! ... on MacOs 10.6 :apple:
Thank you!

Software Update Error

Hello, I visited Genius Bar today and they could not fix my problem, so I've scheduled to go back for them to reinstall the OS.
I have a Macbook 6.1 running OS X 10.6.2.
Software updates have not worked for 4 months apparently.
They download correctly, but there is always an installation error.
Genius Bar suspected home network problems and tried deleting the files, and downloading all updates again while in Apple Store. He also corrected file permissions (an error occurred then, too). And then, the same error occurred again.
If anyone has any suggestions to fix myself, I'd really appreciate it, as I would really like to avoid going in to the AppleStore again due to time required.
Many thanks!
William

10.6 Software Update-Unexpected Error

This is my first time to visit this forum and I'm not sure if I need to open up a new Post or just "Reply" to this thread (as I did below). Can someone please advise re the correct Protocol?
I would like to add that the Apple store deleted all the updates and downloaded them again, but the same error occurred.

Software Update not working!!!

Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone could help me with an annoying problem I've now had for several weeks. My new MacBook Pro purchased in July, 2010 as well as an older iMac both will not update software automatically. In Software Update, updates are set to "daily," however the last time checked is when I did it manually. I've now tried deleting preference files in my user as well as system Library folders for Software Update (as mentioned above in this thread multiple times), and even reinstalling Snow Leopard. However, something must be corrupted in my user profile because it still will not perform checks automatically. They work fine when done manually. If I create a new test user with admin privileges, automatic updates work just fine. That is why I believe something is corrupting it for my specific user (Intego VirusBarrier?? Parallels??).

What do I do next?

Open Console (in Utilities) and in the File menu choose Open Console Log. Type suhelperd into the Console Messages filter/search box. Copy and post any text that appears.

Software Update not working!!!

LPZ,
Thanks so much for your reply. Here is a summary for both of my machines:

MacBook Pro:

9/24/10 1:00:42 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[340]) Exited with exit code: 2
9/24/10 1:25:33 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[285]) Exited with exit code: 2
9/24/10 1:29:24 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[246]) Exited with exit code: 2

Please note that 9/24/10 1:28 PM is the last time I did a manual update for this computer, which was just after reinstalling OS10.6 from my system disk (per Apple advisor suggestion).

iMac (on which I did not reinstall system)

9/22/10 8:35:16 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[2322]) Exited with exit code: 2
9/22/10 5:40:16 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[1049]) Exited with exit code: 2
9/23/10 5:39:52 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.suhelperd[2948]) Exited with exit code: 2

For this computer, last update was 9/23/10, 5:39 PM and was automatic.

Software Update not working!!!

@PhelpsiPhan: As mentioned above, I tried reinstalling the OS from my system disk on my MacBook Pro -- this did not fix the problem... still not checking for software updates automatically.

The problem exists on two separate accounts on two separate machines?

My new MacBook Pro purchased in July, 2010 as well as an older iMac both will not update software automatically.

In one of the accounts where automatic updating is not working, open Terminal (in Utilities) and enter:

Code:
softwareupdate --schedule

Do you receive

Code:
Automatic check is on

in reply?

LPZ:
Yes, that is correct. Same problem on my user account on two different machines. These user accounts not identical (i.e., I did not directly migrate my user over when I first got MacBook Pro). I am signed into my same MobileMe account on both computers, however.

I ran the Terminal check as you mentioned, and, for both computers, I do get "Automatic check is on" !

Thanks.

OK, I'm puzzled too.

Open Console again, and look in both

File->Open Quickly->Diagnostic and Usage Information->User Diagnostic Reports

and

File->Open Quickly->Diagnostic and Usage Information->System Diagnostic Reports

for a crash report for suhelperd

For MacBookPro:
User:
- 1 crash for File Synchronization program 9/20
- 3 crashes for HP scan (my printer software) 9/24

System:
- 1 crash for hdiutil? 9/22
- 1 panic for Kernel 9/19-9/20
- 5 crashes for VirusBarrier 9/13, 9/13, 9/14, 9/15

For iMac:
User:
- 2 crashes for WebKitPlugin (?) 9/13, 9/16

System:
- 2 panics for Kernel 9/19, 9/25
- 1 crash for VirusBarrier 9/16

Thanks again LPZ for your help. It is much appreciated. My Apple advisor appears to be stumped at this point as well. As you can see, no crashes for suhelperd. This is the strangest thing.

Software Update not working!!!

@LPZ:
Would also add to the above that I again created a "test" user account with admin privileges, and it performed an automatic Software Update check normally when I did this. Once again, I think something is corrupting my home user profile, but I just can't figure out what it is...

Thanks so much for the help!!!

mac repair

I upgraded my server from 10.4 to snow leopard; after, Software update would not run for me, displaying, "An error occurred during installation." I uploaded each software update from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2, step by step. Software Update finally accepted once I got to 10.6.6, but would not finish the update, even after attempting to do so over a 10 hour period. I read this forum and did three steps:

deleted the Cache file
deleted the software update preferences plist file
ran "Repair Permissions" under Disk Utility.
Emptied the trash
Restarted and voila - software update a success. Saved a long trek to the Apple Store.

Thanks for the help! Tech Support can be so frustrating, once you even get to a person and explain your issue, their initial troubleshooting qs are so elementary i usually just hang up from frustration.

Hmm... there's one other file you can try deleting - Software Update's preferences. It's found in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.softwareupdate.plist.

Also, open up Console and look at the Software Update crash log. This may reveal more about what exactly went wrong. I can help interpret log files, if you think that's worth a try.

Ok, so, when I select Software Update, everything seems to go well, I even get to restart the laptop and it shows the installation bar for the selected installations to be made. continually says ERROR right toward the end, and I need to re-start again.

I can't seem to get past this, driving me crazy, I dont have the Mac App Store, and can't access iMovie or some other applications now - NOR can i get them updated in any way! PLEASE help, I would really appreciate it. So far I've tried everything I've read on the page already...

Thanks A LOT!

Imac wont startup

Hello all,

There was power failure while i was updating my iMac firmware and since then i have not been able to start up the computer, the power on light indicates but the screen is dead. Any suggestions. I need help please

Mac Does not startup

I had a problem with my iMac, while updating the firmware i lost power supply and after that the Mac refused to start up. I visited various Mac Blogs and tried most of what was suggested on then , with no luck. As a last resort, i visited the Apple support website and all i had to do was download a firmware restore mirror cd, burn to a cd and insert in the drive of my IMac during startup. My iMac is back in shape

Right, it's been a LONG time since I've tried diagnosing 10.5 systems. That being said, the steps that work on 10.6 and 10.7 should work on 10.5 too (but NOT 10.8) - namely, clearing your user and system Software Update caches. The user cache lives in ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, where ~ is UNIX shorthand for your home folder. The system cache is at the same path, without the ~ at the beginning (meaning the Library folder at the root of your boot drive is where you should start).

I just updated a software update in macbook pro after it completed it restarted again but the apple logo was there for two minutes and then there were these listings saying drive not found what does that mean ?? Please help me i am scared that i have lost my data
