You can ignore my post on the first page because the Software Update mysteriously started working again Wednesday night. (It automatically downloaded the RAW compatibility update 2.7, for example.) I have no idea what could have happened.I have a minor problem with the Software Update feature. While it works fine manually it won't check for updates automatically. For example, changing between Daily, Weekly, and Monthly does nothing. The Last checked time and date always show the last time I did a manual update.
Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone could help me with an annoying problem I've now had for several weeks. My new MacBook Pro purchased in July, 2010 as well as an older iMac both will not update software automatically. In Software Update, updates are set to "daily," however the last time checked is when I did it manually. I've now tried deleting preference files in my user as well as system Library folders for Software Update (as mentioned above in this thread multiple times), and even reinstalling Snow Leopard. However, something must be corrupted in my user profile because it still will not perform checks automatically. They work fine when done manually. If I create a new test user with admin privileges, automatic updates work just fine. That is why I believe something is corrupting it for my specific user (Intego VirusBarrier?? Parallels??).
What do I do next?
My new MacBook Pro purchased in July, 2010 as well as an older iMac both will not update software automatically.
softwareupdate --schedule
Automatic check is on
The problem exists on two separate accounts on two separate machines?
In one of the accounts where automatic updating is not working, open Terminal (in Utilities) and enter:
Code:softwareupdate --schedule
Do you receive
Code:Automatic check is on
in reply?
OK, I'm puzzled too.
Open Console again, and look in both
File->Open Quickly->Diagnostic and Usage Information->User Diagnostic Reports
and
File->Open Quickly->Diagnostic and Usage Information->System Diagnostic Reports
for a crash report for suhelperd
This solved it for me:

I had to disable SPI in my router settings.
Have a look to see if your router is listed as a likely problem:

Mine is a Netgear WGR614 (v7)
I was able to download the update but it said it was corrupt when I tried to install it, now I have no problems and can update properly.
(Btw, this also caused issues with updating my PS3 Firmware)
Hope this helps.
Neil.

Hmm... there's one other file you can try deleting - Software Update's preferences. It's found in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.softwareupdate.plist.
Also, open up Console and look at the Software Update crash log. This may reveal more about what exactly went wrong. I can help interpret log files, if you think that's worth a try.
Right, it's been a LONG time since I've tried diagnosing 10.5 systems. That being said, the steps that work on 10.6 and 10.7 should work on 10.5 too (but NOT 10.8) - namely, clearing your user and system Software Update caches. The user cache lives in ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, where ~ is UNIX shorthand for your home folder. The system cache is at the same path, without the ~ at the beginning (meaning the Library folder at the root of your boot drive is where you should start).Ok, so, when I select Software Update, everything seems to go well, I even get to restart the laptop and it shows the installation bar for the selected installations to be made. continually says ERROR right toward the end, and I need to re-start again.
I can't seem to get past this, driving me crazy, I dont have the Mac App Store, and can't access iMovie or some other applications now - NOR can i get them updated in any way! PLEASE help, I would really appreciate it. So far I've tried everything I've read on the page already...
Thanks A LOT!
