Yep I am leaning more and the Best Buy or Radio Shack option. If I get the new updated iPhone 4 with no hassle and no cash out of pocket. should I complain about it. imagine if we could trade in older computer for newer faster better ones. while Ebay is tempting I hear this stuff more and more selling to some one on Craigs (local cash is another option) ebay is just scary at times. oh thanks TS I was leaning towards doing it ebay you reminded me why I shouldn't.

Sellers are also covered in the eBay protection plan.. If the files a claim efite contacting you. That is wrong now. After the claim is filled and you offer a refund ou must let eBay know and if te phone is not sent back which it should be the buyer will be repremadned by eBay and the seller will also get a refund.. It's all noted in there policy. I have been on both ends of this problem and always gotten my money back. One time not gettig the product but eBay paid for it..

Wow!

This is a scary story. I've sold a few items (including a Palm Treo and Apple MacBook Air) on eBay without incident. I'm getting ready to sell my pristine 5 month old 3GS on eBay. Now I'm having second thoughts after reading this story.

I saw an ad for the Gazelle service which will buy your electronic items. Maybe I should just do that? I'll get less money for the iPhone but maybe have piece of mind.

Has anyone ever used them before and if so, what was the experience like?

Thanks!

They don't pay as much though =/

I had this happen to me once. I sold perfect condition electronic drums and the guy that bought them was an "expert drummer" who bought them for his son and said that they were "too sensitive" so they must be broken. I assured him they werent he had to adjust the drums and the sensitivity to avoid "crosstalk" which is the term for one drum being triggered when you hit another. After like 22 days my money had finally been released and I never heard from him again. But it was a scary situation. All I could envision was him sending me back a different set that WAS broken and him keeping the new drums AND the money.

So as the iphone 4 approaches im scared to death of selling my 3GS on ebay. I may try craigslist and make them meet in a crowded place or something haha.

I hate selling on eBay but that's because I sell alot more now. The more you sell, the more jerks you run into. Like someone else said, it's crazy that as a seller you can only leave positive feedback. There is nothing you can do about negative feedback, rarely the person who posted a negative rethinks their stance on the auction.

Sorry to hear about your trouble, it's an unfortunate part of eBay today.

next time sell on craigslist. Its all local (no shipping fees) and you dont have to deal with paypall. Once you sell it you can totally ignore the calls of the buyer and refuse to help him. Theres no where he can complain to. Its kind of rude...i know but its an extreme example

I wouldn't even think of selling anything on ebay. I hate PayPal. Craigslist is great. Just meet them in a public place and take cash only. Fake bills are pretty easy to spot.

just got a quote from cexchange.com about a $100 more then Gazelle only issue I see is in the payment policy says it take 2-4 weeks they offered $387 32 gb 3GS. I contacted them about the payment time frame. I heard good things about both as far as paying.

Besides something like Gazelle, another alternative would probably be a marketplace on a forum. There's a better chance of not getting screwed over when the entire board is watching.

Isnt there an option to only allow bidders that have a rating of X or higher so that you only get reliable bidders?

I had only one negative experience with eBay/Paypal over the years (that wasn't my fault-I once sent something to Indonesia-my bad). I sold a DVD box set and mislabeled it in the auction. The seller wanted money back and to keep the DVDs. I said nope, send it back. Paypal sided with me, but the loser left negative feedback and of course, eBay doesn't let the seller leave negative feedback (which I think is wrong).

If I decide to sell, I will be using cexchange.com which is the same site that Radio Shack uses only they pay about $75 more. My 3GS will fetch $387, problem is, I don't qualify for an upgrade-$499+$18 upgrade fee-so this 'upgrade' will cost about $175. Not sure if its worth it. We'll see.:)

And this is why I never buy stuff on craigslist.

I agree. Got burned by eBay and Paypal a couple times and that's it. I will never sell things on eBay.

Same thing happened with me. I sold my 3G, and it was in impeccable condition before sending... I took extra care in cleaning the phone and disclosing all wear on the handset. The buyer got it and promptly filed a pay pal claim using the excuse that the back of the phone was cracked. I get an email the next day that the phone now has 2 cracks. 2 days later, the phone now has 2 cracks and stuck pixels. I clearly marked that the phone was used and no returns would be accepted.

Paypal tried to pull the funds from my account, but I had a very sneaky suspicion that this guy was trying to pull one over on me, so I cleaned out my pay pal account , disconnected my CC and account info before Paypal got to it.... Otherwise I would have been in the same boat as you.

I HATE their new policies and Paypal has only gotten worse over the past few months, so I don't use them unless absolutely necessary.

Lesson learned.

Its just too easy to get scammed on eBay these days.

Wow these stories have me really worried. Selling some things on eBay right now to help curb the funds (mainly video games and soon my broken 3G), but now i'm worried that i'll end up screwed. Does putting "No refunds" actually help?

They don't contact debt collection?

if you decide to sell on craigslist use a google voice number and than just simply block his number after the deal. craigslist despite being face to face can be the least personal way to sell an item. sorry if this is cold to buyers but when i had someone accuse me of bad items when i know for a fact my stuff is good and exactly as i described (xbox 360 the guy didnt have the cords right!) i tend to not care anymore.

This is why I don't use eBay anymore. I sold an item for $150, in perfect condition. The buyer received the item, disputed the claim through Paypal, and I had to fight to keep the money. Luckily I was able to give them the tracking number and was covered under their Buyer Protection program, so I got my money eventually and left Paypal to sort it all with the buyer.

You do have to watch for scammers, but generally you can make things work fairly. It's just a huge hassle to do so. If I were selling my iPhone, I'd use one of the trade-in websites. You may be getting less money, but you don't have to worry about getting screwed.

This is why I prefer Craigslist, though don't give your home phone number because a simple google of your (area code) phone number pulls up your address as well (scary right!?), so I only give out my cell phone. I would never give out a bad product of course, but if something like that were to happen, you wouldn't lose your money in a possible scam.

Pay Pal dispute is not the worst. You should be happy he didn't file a "charge back" with his credit card company. Then you are really screwed. Pay Pal does not protect sellers from charge backs. It really SUCKS.
