Nicest thing about the iPad is the screen,
or maybe its better said the washed out Air
screen leaves one wishing for better.

Maybe Steve is right this is the post PC era?

No - more extensive writing (and other productivity tasks) cannot be done in a good way without a physical keyboard in a good angle with the screen. It simply cannot be done.

Correction - it CAN be done. Maybe just not comfortably... :D

There are also a couple of keyboard solutions for the iPad that also allow for the positioning of the screen at an angle, making it in essence a laptop. But me, personally, prefer a real computer for that kind of work... :apple:

I agree -- it is a matter of personal preference, though. Some people might not mind the on screen keyboard. I found that I could use it for light emails (20 words or less) but if I needed to type anything more substantial it became a burden.

not only that, but I really don't see how if you add a BT keyboard, that it solves the problem as I still have no mouse. I still have to type, then reach up and touch the screen and swipe stuff with my finger which is not very accurate. Until you can add a BT mouse to the pad, all my content creation will be on the MBA.

Just the opposite . . .

I had both and returned the iPad 2. I love the 11" MBA with a 480 GB SSD from OWC. The iPad 2 had horrible syncing problems causing numerous lock-ups and re-boots on my wife's MBP. I consider the iPad 2 a somewhat cool piece of hardware crippled by junk software (iTunes).

Not to mention if you add the bluetooth keyboard, you've basically got a MBA.

The whole point and purpose of the iPad was to be a completely stand alone device.

and exactly what it's good for - viewing data standing up....I have no idea why this is such a war...APPLE makes both these products, and certainly knew if one would cannibalize the other...and they do not...

Apple will always have the range of products and us little Appleites will either buy them all, only to complain that we cannot find which one is the only one we need,

or will complain that we need them all but cannot use the at the very same time,

or will buy only some and then carry on like a pork chop about how it is better than the ones we did not buy, or how it is not exactly what we wanted in the first place and how the thing we did not buy is the actual thing we need,

or will do any of the myriad things that people do when it comes to Apple products...

or will simply just read the posts of those who write about the things previously mentioned and pray the she, who shall remain nameless, will not remember that we agreed to go and visit her parents....

Just a quick response -- in order to listen to music or internet radio etc you cant even close the screen unless you install a 3rd party app that actually keeps the screen ON when its closed. Not so with the ipad whuvh you can carry around and listen like a slim portable radio. As i said i think the mba is a nice machine but the ipad does a lot more entertaining things a lot bettter without a keybiard attached.:D

Isn't that what an iPhone is for? That's why I sold my iPad 2. It became more of an iPhone replacement than a MBA replacement. But I can also talk on my iPhone; can't do that with the iPad.

So I kept my MBA and iPhone 4 and returned the iPad because having all three was a waste of time and money.

The apple bt keyboard and the apple magic bt trackpad. Great combo with my mac mini main puter but i never used the kb and tp with the ipad but they work.

No, I tried connecting the magic track pad with iPad 2 and bluetooth can't discover it. But the wireless keyboard works.

Even if you could connect the Trackpad or mouse to the iPad, what would you do with it? Its not like there is a mouse pointer to move around...

I run:
VMware
Dosbox
Logic (as full midi workstation with lots of virtual instruments)

I've had iPad 1 before, as a touch typist the horizontal on screen keyboard works surprisingly well and I can type as if I'm on a real keyboard - just less accurate but not a big problem thanks to spelling correction. Reading ebooks and comics on it is great. Crazy long battery life for video playback and browsing. Great games too.

And that's about it. It's an entertainment device, hence being called a "toy", toys serve as an entertainment object/device/whatever you want to call it. And it's a great toy!

But that's about it. It can't run the things I wanted to. MBA is also my main machine. I wanted an all in one device and MBA serve the purpose very well. Does it make iPad look bad? NO! Does it means MBA is superior product? NOO!

Everybody has different need, hence Apple make different products to cater different needs - which ever you bought, Apple is taking your money.

I don't understand the fuss about this thread.:D

Well, I happen to have:
- iMac (2008, 2.8 Core 2 Duo) my workstation at home for imovie, photo processing news download etc
- iPad (1) for surfing and email using Active Sync, even use it at work which has a no mac policy since ipad is not considered to interfere with pc policy. Excellent for watching movies on planes and some simple apps.
- MBA (13") for traveling and when I have to work and do more serious stuff away from my iMac.

To me all three fills a need with, granted very, different usage patterns.
iPad is the read/surf in bed. imac used the most for heavy stuff and games.
MBA my walk around and all round laptop for pretty much everything on the go, although I use it the least out of the three.

I actually debated with my self if I should go with the 11" MBA and sell my iPad but I am glad I didn't since even if they overlap they also complement each other. Like someone else wrote, iPad is great for consumption of content and MBA for creation of content "on the go".

My 2 cents...

...

I returned my macbook air and use my iPad 2 also, however the air really is better than the iPad, only thing I prefer about the iPad is battery life...oh and also the fact that I already own it and the air was almost $1500

OK, then... it CAN be done, BUT...

Correction - it CAN be done. Maybe just not comfortably... :D

Of course - I agree with that argument and these "qualifiers". But for me, that's just too cumbersome to carry both a KB and a screen and find a way to arrange them, etc. So it goes without saying: Also I, personally, prefer a real computer for that kind of work, i.d. extensive writing, etc.

If there were ever a thread that earns the "Cool story, bro" tag, it would be this one.

I've been struggling for the past couple of days on whether or not to buy an MBA. My MacBook is 3 years old now. Yet, I have the iPad 2 and since I bought my iPad1 the only thing I've used my MacBook for is syncing. Still, I am thinking of getting into blogging. I'm typing this on a keyboard now on my iPad and it is fine. Stilll, I'm a tech freak and the new MBA looks sweet!

I tried the zaggate, tried the apple keyboard. The first has the right size for the iPad, and brings protection but the keys are impossible to work on at full speed, the second has the right size of keys but is difficult to pack with an iPad and most of all the iPad doesn't have a file system nor the flexibility of a MBA. I can understand somebody doing this, I just can't see myself doing it.

I have the original air and the iPad 2. Use both of them equally just differently. Love to consume content with the pad anywhere I go and push content with my air. They are both good arrows in the quiver!
