Actually, they may not be. One thing UPS or Fedex will do with large-volume shippers is offer even better rates than the rates they can already get, by dropping any 'liability' options (or capping it). Found this out at my previous employer when a co-worker filed a damage claim. He did all the steps of the process, including providing an invoice for a one-off, machined part made of a high-alloy material (it was thousands of dollars). All through the claims process, no one at the carrier said anything... A couple weeks later, he rec'd a check for $100 (US). That was the maximum they pay out on claims (in return for really good rates).

Remember, Apple ships computers, iPhones, iPods, etc direct from China, using 2-day service in many cases and those rates can't be cheap. But they get so much of a discount, they can "afford" to have a few devices lost. UPS and Fedex do lose or damage "x" packages per day so given Apple's volume, that % will hit Apple's shipments too.

It would not matter if Apple insured it or not. If it did not reach my house or office, Apple would have to replace it or I would reverse the credit card charges. You can bet the have a deal with UPS and FedEx and if lost the buyer is protected.

I have My Choice with UPS and whatever FedEx's is called for my address, which often allows you to redirect the package and pick it up at a UPS or FedEx. The shipper just can't be cheap and use the budget shipping.

Well said.
Not when we're talking about the richest company in the world with billions in profits.
They go the extra mile when it comes to customer service and satisfaction.
They dont do budget shipping or letting the customer eat the loss😉

I didn't mean to imply that the "customer" would be affected (other than a delay). I meant that UPS or Fedex wouldn't be reimbursing Apple. Apple would write it off as a "loss" and you would still get your phone.

And how would you know what deal Apple has in place with international couriers and weather or not they will take the loss for lost and stolen shipped items?

Hi- sorry if this question or issue is redundant but I wanted to get some advice. I have a replacement iPhone X that was shipped and supposed to be delivered to me today by 3pm. It shows leaving the Memphis hub but never making it to MN. I called FedEx thinking it may have been delayed since we are getting closer to the holidays and I’m sure they are really busy. The rep told me they would look into it and a Trace Agent would return my call. A few minutes later I get a call from the Trace Agent who said “Ummm it is lost... sorry”.

I told her it was unacceptable. She said she would call me if it turns up... I talked to Apple but they are swamped with calls and I kept getting disconnected even though I have a call back number with them I gave to each rep they didn’t call me back.

Is there a chance it wasn’t lost and the FedEx rep didn’t know what they were talking about? I honestly don’t want to pay the $1200 for a phone I never received.

If anyone has gone through this I would love to know. Thanks!

You will not have to pay $1200 for an item that you didn't receive.
If it got lost or stolen in transit that's FedEx's responsibility.
Contact Apple and let them know about the incident. They are the sender so they will also contact FedEx on their end and will find out what happened.
Let them know that you want another one shipped out to you right away.

Any delivery service I've ever encountered is supposed to require a signature for a package above a certain value, and an iPhone definitely qualifies. But there's always the stories about a lazy or negligent delivery person who doesn't care and just leaves it there.

Signature being required is not up to the delivery service, it is up to the sender who pay extra for it.

There seems to be little rhyme or reason with this. Previously, at work, my UPS driver said that all shipments to a business address required a signature. A few weeks ago, he would drop off packages and check his scanner because it seems that signatures were optional in some cases - and then he said, "nope, no signature today, we're good". Since then, no signatures are needed. I suspect it may be volume-related with the holidays....

I'm also looking at the options for deliveries in the UPS Worldship software and there's nothing for "signature required".

So it's Apple's fault that my $1300 CDN iPhone 8 Plus was left at my door after the UPS delivery person rang once and quickly left? That's good to know.

Yes, the shipping company doesn't make these decisions.
The sender decides what kind of delivery options they want for the package they mail out and how fast to arrive and if they want signature confirmation etc...

We used to have to sign for everything at my company's loading dock. Now UPS says no signatures are required. I asked why and he said it as a new company policy to speed things up. He said if the person who ships is willing to pay extra they will still have to capture a signature.

I just happened to talk to my inside rep at UPS in between my last message and this one. They did change their policy around September, in fact.
