Tested in store at 59% then again later that evening at home at 48% New charger model is A2452

Any idea what was the previous model?

I have the same model out-of-the-box and it had the issue. It got resolved conclusively in beta 4.

Base model 16 M1 pro. I thought it was weird too and almost didn’t go pick up the new charging block based on what I had read here but I didn’t want to get on the beta so I went for the replacement charger. I’ll run it down again today and report back.

Same model brick, my M1 Max had the bug and is resolved only in beta 4 now. Reliably. Tested twice. Once around 50% and I ran down the battery to automatic sleep and then charged back from shutdown - perfect as expected.

If you have the same model brick, I do not think anything was changed inside.

Nice to know ahead of time that the issue is fixed with the next version release. I receive my M1 MAX in two days counting. Thank you to those who have reported to give us some relief on an expensive purchase. :)

Congratulations on your machine. I never had issues with this charging, it is just blown out of proportion for most part. I usually charge while working on it and rarely ever charge when switched off.

Furthermore, the issue (before beta 4) is resolved simply by opening the lid, letting the computer switch on (5 seconds) and shut it down (5 seconds). It can then charge normally.

However, again, that's going to be fixed for everyone sooner than later as it is fixed in beta 4 (unless we have an RC or beta 5 that breaks it again).

Thanks, I have to say..and I laugh at myself about this silly laptop..

for I use to laugh at all of the people who get excited for something like a laptop or computer (just a tool really and/or can be something entertaining etc.) being delivered or buying..especially spending a big chuck of money on it.

But..I have been waiting over a month for this and have technically one more day before delivery (my tracking has been stuck on 12/2 for updates, so don’t know anything) and the wait is killing me. :)

I am all excited like a kid waiting for Christmas and I laugh at myself for this. My wife is tired of hearing me talk about it. :)

I feel like the guy looking out the window every hour and hoping the delivery guy or gal comes walking up the door (someone on a previous post had a perfect gif of it..laughed when seeing it).

The reality is this it will be used to work..meaning more work and longer hours. It just makes work faster and easier, but because of the speed of finishing work, creates opportunity to add MORE work. ;)

Regardless…one more day!!!!

What did you order? I got mine in store on Black Friday so I didn’t have to wait

When it arrives, you might find that you are pleasantly surprised by the slightly chunky retro appearance. This makes it easier to pick up, and the opening mechanism has a quality feel. You probably won’t notice the extra weight or the notch. And you’ll love the battery life.

HDMI is not something I need, but I was very glad to see the return of the SD card slot.

My laptop can now be used with my 5K monitor without fans blasting out hot air. Safari scrolling is buttery smooth.

My only real gripe is down to Monterey which, I’m sure, will be getting an update very very soon. It sometimes takes an age to connect to WiFi, which never happened before Monterey.

Before buying I was able to take a look at one at a third party store. I did notice the retro look and “feel” right away, but was ok with it. I have an old MacBook Pro 2010 (still use for a few old programs) and it reminded me of it.

I also have currently a MacBook Pro 2018 (actually like), so definitely there is quite a difference between the two. I actually liked the Touch Bar and the smaller Touch ID button…and…did not mine the butterfly keyboard, (though after awhile my hands get tired during long bouts of typing), but I can adjust and is also ok with the changes. I will probably like the new keyboard as well.

I got this for the power and speed for work. Have a 12-core Mac Pro 2013 and the new one can replace it to (my surprise) for a laptop. I actually like the Mac Pro 2013, but look forward to a better workflow. I work with video production so this laptop was made for me.. ;)

Oh well my Max didn't recharge overnight with the lid closed. First time it happened. This really needs to be fixed ASAP.

So did it arrive?

So did it arrive?

Yes it did, thanks for asking! :) To my surprise it arrived on the day Apple said it would.

Yesterday, I had two deliveries before it arrived and ran to the door each time the doorbell rang...my wife got a good laugh (LOL). Worked until the late hours last night on a project with it (MacBook Pro came at the right time) so it is why I did not respond to comment earlier. ZZZzzzz.

Here is my thoughts after the first day:

Wonderful laptop! I bought it exclusively for Final Cut Pro since I use the program the most and I am very happy so far with it! Fast!..burns through rendering in minutes instead of an hour or more (coming from a 12-Core Mac Pro 2013 and i9 MacBook Pro 2018). Definitely a difference!

First, the pleasure and fun of unwrapping and unboxing it.

Apple's packaging and unboxing design is top "notch" (pun intended) :). even Apple's signature cardboard box that it is delivered with is intricately designed and very appreciated (as I am into design and like that stuff). Even taking off the clear plastic wrap is something to experience. :)

What was first noticed after the "Hello" greeting (cool retro) is that Apple ships the unit with a desktop wallpaper that hides the notch when first opening the lid. Nice touch for first impressions, but if you change the background to something else, it is noticeable...but not a game changer.

I could have lived with the previous 720p camera without a notch in the top middle...but again I can deal with it. In full screen mode apps adjust to it (bring it lower) and looks funny to the eye if you hide the menu bar...but...is a small sacrifice as I am more concerned with processing and rendering power that I needed.

Keyboard is nice (better of course than the butterfly - though I did not mine it), but it will take some time again to get use too, actually a better typing experience. I would say typing long periods with the new keyboard is much better on the fingers. Apple hit a Home run with the keyboard. :)

The screen (of course) is nice. My tired eyes get a little strained at looking at the screen, but my eyes will adjust. This is probably my fault as the eye doctor says I spend too much time on computers anyway...not a choice..but hey..its a living..

The F-keys are nice, but I think it did not have to be so big as far as Apple's design choice going with the smaller Arrow keys. Big F-Keys are better when doing programing, but I do only a little coding now-a-days and more video editing. I have an Apple Mac Pro Black Keyboard that is great for Final Cut Pro with the larger Arrow Keys and plenty of custom keying etc. so I am good with the Keyboard on the MacBook Pro. I am coming from the Touch Bar and thought they had room for it on the top above the keyboard...Touch Bar was great for Logic Pro and some Final Cut stuff...but ok without it.

Work Related impressions: Fantastic!

- I have been rendering with it and so far..and I have noticed..."NO FANS HAVE COME ON..." I had to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming. :)

- Running on battery for awhile and battery meter still says 90%. Unless Apple purposely gages it to look like it is lasting (as they did sometime ago with the iPhone..), I am very impressed with it so far. Battery life a Plus!

- I set the new power setting (when plugged-in only) to High to see if there are any differences, but have not noticed anything yet...fans to do come on either.

- Have it hooked up to my 4K LG 27UL850 monitor through HDMI using it as a secondary monitor....nice...

Conclusion:

Finally...after Mac Pro 2013 (liked) and MacBook Pro 2018 (liked)...I have a unit (so far) that looks like to will meet my demands and maybe beyond.

I can relax some until the end-of-the-month when the Credit Card bill comes...but...by then...if it continues to be a blessing (i.e. reduction of workload, saving time, reduce late nights, not waiting for rendering - though it is the time I read MacRumors.. :) This might POSSIBLY BE THE BEST COMPUTER I HAVE EVER OWN. And I have owned many in my days.

My magsafe charger hasn't worked since the day I got it a couple of weeks ago. I got the new 2021 16" m1 version. No lights or anything when it is plugged in. So far I have been using the USB C port to charge. New update 12.1 did not fix it

I also have a new M1 Macbook Pro and am really irritated with the auto boot "feature". Even wiping the keyboard after the machine is shut down is enough for it to auto boot. I've called Apple twice to see if there is a way to disable this and wasted my time. Seems there currently isn't a way which I think is dumb. I travel quite a bit and want to comfort of knowing that I have to hit the power button to start it and not worry that somehow it starts on it's own, something I've heard can happen.

Sorry to dig up this post, but I just wanted to warn people that this issue is happening again with 16 inch M2 Max MBP too but with a slight twist...

Ive had this MBP since 28 days , Everything was working perfect, did all the necessary checks, but a few days ago I decided to try Sonoma PB 4 , and I'm not 100% sure it is related , but since I did , each time I shut down the MacBook Pro if the lid is open , it restarts on magsafe ( cos im using it 90% of the time hooked up to a studio display who powers it ) ... and when the lid is closed ( mine being at 100% battery , I see orange , then green, then the light shut down and it repeats in an infinite loop .

I've tried everything, Wiping the disks, Downgrading to Ventura, Running diagnostic mode ( no issues found ) I even bought a brand new magsafe 3 cable , but the result was the same, I've also tried My 2017 MBP power outlet , a 737 140 Watts Anker power bank , and same result... I ask Apple for a refund , and UPS is supposed to come and take it today but before deleting it , I thought I would try again, and same results, but I forgot to test it with an Anker Nano 65 Watts that I use only to charge the big battery pack , and surprise with the Anker 65 Watts power outlet with magsafe no issues.... but with their 140 Watts power bank the issue still persist .. so I came to the conclusion that when I updated to Sonoma PB 4 there must have been a firmware issue related to fast charging .

I'm quite reassured to noticed that other people experienced it with their M1 Max too , But it's happening again, cos I watched some YT videos about this issue, and there are some M2 max people who are claiming to be affected by this too. My power brick from Apple has the same number as yours A2452..

I'm quite happy to be sure that this isn't an hardware issue on the Mac side , but more on the power outlet side... so I'm gonna cancel the UPS pick up who is supposed to come by today and keep it cos I was lucky to got it from the refurb , only 1 battery cycle and Dx Drive reported that only 600Gb was written to internal SSD.. and it is really as brand new as you can get, I'm an Apple customer since more than 20 years and never thought of trying the refurb .. now I sure will ^^

i have a question though In system information, I can report that my Magsafe firmware is 1040068, maybe you guys who never updated to Sonoma can tell me what's yours please ? I'm on Ventura 13.5 now but I guess your firmware would be different ?

Thanks for sharing.

I went through this originally when it first happened. I have a 15 inch M2 Max MBP now. I also have had every single beta of Sonoma on there since the first developer beta. I use it as my every day machine and I’ve updated every time and update comes out. I also have the same on my Mac studio with an apple studio display. I tried re-creating the situation and plugging my MacBook Pro into the studio display, but everything worked as expected. I can’t remember originally what the solution ended up being if it was a software or hardware problem, I understand you wanting to return your MacBook and I probably would too. But either way, I’m sure it gets resolved shortly. Good luck , if I see anything change, I’ll let you know

thx for your feedback ,you said you had this issue on the M1 Max , I guess I did resolved itself thx to a Monterey update , otherwise you would remember taking actions to send the Mac to Apple or going to an Apple Store I guess ? it's so weird that this issue still exists on 16 inch M2 max though.... I'm still hesitant if I keep it or return it , but I have a few hours left to decide ^^
