Seems like a non-issue relative to memory leak.

memory leak > charging > YouTube HDR

Articles like this feel very much like clickbait.

"An unspecified number of people might or might not have experienced an issue with a particular Apple product. This unspecified number might or might not be enough for Apple to take notice. This is assuming the issue exists in the first place as the only evidence mentioned in the article is anecdotal"
You know MacRumors doesn't post these kinds of articles with EVERY new Apple product, right?

macOS 12.1 beta 4 build 21C5045a

Happy to report that the charging issue seems to be fixed.

On a laptop that is shut down and the lid is closed (admire the glory of the 2021 MacBook Pro for a few seconds, will you?)

1. Connect MagSafe and switch it on
2. Amber blinks once and then stays constant
3. Sound only comes once.

Another thing:
4. While in this state, when you lift the lid to start the laptop, the charging pauses for a moment it seems, because the amber blinks once and then resumes.

I like this. All in all, it seems fixed. I will now stop charging while working and charge it during shut off to know if the charging works as expected or is that something that is still not working.

This is my second repost due to relevance of information to the thread.

This is great news and I'm glad it's fixed. I'm not sure why everyone was running to the Apple store to return their laptops. Especially since everything has an extended return until late January any. Do you have any updates on the memory leak issue? It would be nice if that was fixed as well.

Like I said, I cannot say about memory leaks because I never once experience any. :D ?‍♂️

What are you trying to charge your laptop with?
Hockey puck looking thing like this:

It’s a MagSafe charger, IDK why it isn’t working. ?‍♂️ I think it’s false advertising on Apple’s part.

Mag safe charger + mag safe laptop should work. Shame on Apple if it doesn't!
They shouldn't because while they are both magnetic they actually have different names; your phone is Mag-Safe, your laptop is Mag-Safe-3.

Spoiler alert, your phone Mag-Safe won't power your 2007 MacBook.

Some 16-inch MacBook Pro owners appear to have identified a shared issue suggesting the MagSafe 3 connector sometimes fails to deliver the expected charge when their Mac is turned off and the lid is closed.

As outlined on Reddit, some 16-inch MacBook Pro Models, when powered off, are failing to charge if the MagSafe connector is plugged in. Instead of turning green, the MagSafe light flashes amber and fails to deliver power to the Mac battery. Some customers have contacted Apple Support to find a solution, with varying degrees of success. One user, in particular, said that after a lengthy back and forth, Apple Support decided to send them a replacement laptop.
A video shared on Reddit shows that when the MacBook Pro is closed, the light on the MagSafe charger repeatedly flashes amber and is accompanied by the typical macOS charging sound effect. A consistent orange light means the MacBook is being charged, while green shows it's fully charged.

If a MacBook Pro is connected to MagSafe while turned on and it is then turned off, MagSafe 3 continues to charge the Mac as expected. The issue only occurs for some users when attempting to plug in the MagSafe connector when the Mac is already turned off. The flashing amber MagSafe light is an indication that something is not functioning as normal, and an Apple Support page includes steps for users to take to return MagSafe to normal operation. However, the steps don't seem to work in the reported cases where the MacBook Pro is turned off with the lid closed.

Not all 16-inch MacBook Pro owners face the problem, and MacRumors has been unable to reproduce the bug. Regardless, there are enough users facing the problem that Apple may address it in the near future.

After reading this article, I tested my new MacBook Pro 16 and found I have the same issue. Battery is plus 80% charged, power off and lid closed. After plugging in the MagSafe the yellow light blings on every 3 minutes AND my MacBook Pro 'chimes' every 3 minutes. I've made the initial apple support call and am going to the Genius Bar on Sunday.

Update: 12/3/21

I just received a new charging block from the apple store and the problem no longer exists. I am not on the beta!
Interesting...we will see how it pan's out... (either charger malfunction or firmware...)

This flashing amber light just happened to me for the first time this morning. Confirmed only when laptop is powered off and not on sleep.

1. What's the model number on the charging block?
2. Deplete battery below 60% and try again.

You, most likely, did not trigger fast charging. Problem does not arise in that case.

Meaning: If you had 90% battery and you shut off the computer, closed the lid, disconnected the connector, connected it back, and started the charging, the issue would not surface.

However, if you had battery low enough to trigger fast charging, the issue will surface.

This is resolved in 12.1 beta 4. I have confirmed it twice now. It's done and dusted.

When will Apple push out 12.1 for all users? This charging bug (and others) are annoying

Not soon I think. They still have bugs to fix. The 3/4 fingers gesture to move between full screen windows. The memory leaks. HDR on YouTube crashing. Etc
