Anyone have problems since they upgraded to Yosemite? I upgraded my late 2011 mbp and about a week later it overheated and the logic board fried. It's going to cost me 500$ to fix, and I'm really not happy about this happening.

It's a co-incidence. The AMD Radeon chip is a ticking time bomb unfortunately.

Trust me, none of us were happy!

I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro with the defective NVIDIA 330M. It will randomly kernel panic a couple times a day unless I force it to use integrated graphics at all times, which means I can no longer use my external monitor.

NVIDIA apparently paid Apple for these defective chips, but mine started showing symptoms just a couple months after Apple's 3 year warranty extension ended, and they will not fix it.

That's what you get for buying a cheaply made generic laptop, oh wait...

Come to think of it, I bought one too...

Stupid me, I thought spending over $3,000 with Apple _Did_Buy a Premium Computer.

I've not had any issues since updating to Yosemite. The graphics issue still exists (my symptoms aren't too severe right now though as my Mac tends to just run on the integrated GPU than AMD chip because I don't push it as much lately).

My early 2011 Macbook Pro, 2,2 i7, 8GB is working really slow and using up all the memory with just a couple of safari tabs. It also gets warmer then ist should with that little CPU load. I also have bad screen artifacts.

Apple checked may laptop for days and claims that there is nothing wrong. What can i do?

Thanks for your help

I suspect you are reading the RAM usage wrong for your Mac and that your hard drive is a slow mechanical one and would benefit from at least a 7200rpm SSD/HDD hybrid (they're quite cheap now). Graphics issue, you're screwed too, but you may benefit from just solely using the integrated GPU.

My MBP 2010 CRASH most of the time now...

Hi,

Seeing this topic I want to ask what should I do with my MBP 2010. It crashed A LOT now... And my Apple Care expired in 2013 (bought the 3 years, but never use it)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

similar problem with 2011 MBP

Hey, so I'm kinda new to the Mac game, and ever since buying a refurbished 2011 MBP off Amazon last month, I have had nothing but persistently periodic crashes. Apple care couldn't explain the problem; they said I have some third party RAM, which disallows them from servicing me.

This is a copy of my last Problem Report. It took me 10-15 attempts to successfully reboot after it froze. Can someone please help me interpret this? I'm lost.

Third party ram just means they won't replace that if it's faulty. You could fit some replacement ram if that's the case and see if it stabilises. You could also run Apple's built in diagnostics

Mine now reboots every time it switches to the AMD chip. I have an appointment with Apple but in the meantime I thought I'd try disable the AMD chip. Unfortunately, using gfxCardStatus to select the integrated GPU also triggers a reboot.

Is there another method I could use to disable the AMD chip?

EDIT: it's toast now. Just fuzzy colours as soon as I turn it on now. I guess I will have to wait for my appointment with Apple :(

I've been searching around all day as my MacBook Pro just did something similar this morning. Woke up to a blank screen, tried to restart, got blue screen like this after login. Can't even boot into Recovery at this point. I've got an appointment set up as well.

I took mine in, finally, I'd just set it aside as unusable last year, but took it out, retried it, same intermittent glitches. The Genius told me it would not be covered under the repair program -- but when I got it back, it had been repaired and no charge for it. So far (a few weeks) it's had one bad morning -- booted to a black screen requiring repeated restarts -- but no problem since that.

I took mine in last year shortly after I already purchased a replacement but it was free of charge and they even replaced the battery. Aside from that I replaced a noisy fan myself. So far it's been working great. I use it mostly to render and convert video and as a build server. It gets quite a workout on a daily basis and it's working great.

GPU failed again last week after over a year of no issues. I took it back in and it's definitely out of the warranty window for the repairs, but after I told them they already repaired it, they sent it back again for repair free of charge.
