So apple is forcing people to buy authorized apple chargers to get fast charging?

They're forcing people to buy chargers that comply with the Qi EPP standard to get fast charging. Those are the "fixed frequency voltage regulation" chargers the article talks about.

They're apparently disabling this variable frequency made-in-China 7.5 W charging shortcut that causes interference to phone circuits and does not meet the relevant Qi standard.

Compare the noise in the top chart to the bottom chart in the article.

Agreed...these cheap chargers could damage the battery and create too much heat.

I use a $35 Qi Satechi "Fast Charge" charger bought from Amazon for my XR, and it works great. I've never really cared how long it takes to charge, as it sits beside me while I work for 8-10-12 hours each day. Thankfully my Apple Watch reminds me to get up and move around once in a while. 🤣

This charger claims to be a "Fast Charge" charger at 5W. Aren't those two contradictory?

Very happy with it, nonetheless.

$30 isn't that cheap. There are like $3 ones that I'd be worried about.

I think there is an element of truth to it. There has to be some standard for them to charge correctly. Maybe the one you use is fine, but there is a lot of garbage.

i'm sure there is and i can imagine that mine is garbage too, but it was the most convenient and aesthetically pleasing one that i could find that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. there really aren't that many great charges out there that are made by trustworthy brands and don't cost obscene amounts of money imho.

Some chargers? Perhaps if they're going to do this, maybe they should state which ones we should use?

Personally, the 3 in my house are all Samsung. I don't do cheap Chinese knock offs.

Probably not, but you knew that. maybe everyone ought to just take a deep breath until this is confirmed and explained, yah?

They have the nerve to call 7.5w as “Apple Fast Charging” when there are android phones that wirelessly charge at 10W, lol
and ruin-in your battery, LOL

Wow, you sound like you actually know something before commenting. so refreshing.

Honestly, it took 3 minutes of Google. There's vendors even warning not to implement it using the out-of-spec method because they already knew about the interference issue and expected Apple would be disabling it.

so is this problem limited to this year's models, or are we all screwed?
Don''t think many people care. Charge overnight every other night, pretty simple really. Fast charging kills your battery life, so its only good for emergencies. But hey, I get quite a bit of charge on my X in only 15 or 30 minutes. Emergency covered!

AirPower is the only device capable of charging at 7.5W now.
Oh, wait...

I'm not really bothered by this, when I charge on a Qi pad I'm never in a rush so 5W is ok, but I wonder if it is just temporary, otherwise it would be important to inform customers about the limit.

i guess. but i also use a wireless charger at work and it would be nice to know if that's been butchered too. of course i'll soon know)

I’m wondering if this would be the reason that the Pro models have additional cables and sensors for the battery, given that Apple now includes a fast charger. Fast charging produces a lot of heat that can degrade the battery life in the long run. Only Apple knows and we are speculating.

I noticed this a while back for one of the iOS 12 point updates with the 10.5" iPad Pro. I used to be able to use a 30w PD Anker charger with an Apple Type C to lightning cable to charge at 29w...After the update is would charge at only 13w.

I'm new to wireless charging, coming from a 7+.
Have the 11Pro and the iwatch5, I desire to use the watch in night mode and get rid of my alarm clock.
Suggestions appreciated for a 2-1 fast charger.

From Apple website, full list of iOS 13 enhancements:
"Optimized battery charging
A new option helps slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. iPhone uses on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80 percent until you need to use it."

If you charge every night your phone, and you go to sleep at midnight, it won't use quick charge, that will simply reduce your battery life... but it will advise that phone will be charged one hour before you usually wake up...

Really? Let's see some links. Which ones are garbage and cause too much heat and kill the battery?

Either way - slow AF. If I want to charge fast, I plug into a real charger. Wireless charging, for me, is more for convenience when charging overnight or sitting on my desk at work. Don't really care if it's slow
Yes this. Slow is easier on the battery, I don't want an overnight charger to be fast.
