A minor gen A issue, nothing out of the ordinary.

It's only "minor" to YOU because, clearly YOU aren't impacted. It's a pretty big deal and deal breaker to those impacted by it. I don't own them, but I'd be seriously upset if I bought something that didn't work properly and a charging case that doesn't hold a charge is a deal breaker. So don't act like people impacted by this are being "unreasonable" to expect their product to work.

rule number one for apple users:
never update softwares within the first 3 weeks. never buy product on launch, wait for 3 weeks. never buy first gen apple products.

This is the case for ANY tech product. However, Apple used to be better about this than most companies. Or there just wasn't the internet to highlight the flaws.

I can't even deal with the fallacy of "never buy 1st-gen Apple products" anymore.

If the product fits your needs, buy it.

If no one ever buys a 1st-gen product problems will obviously never be found, let alone a "2nd-gen" even existing due to complete failure of the initial product launch.

I couldn't be happier being in on the initial launch of the iPhone and iPad. I would have missed out on a lot waiting around for reviews and a perfect revision of that tech years down the line.
Couldn't agree more.

This is what happens when weak management without technology experience set priorities, deadlines, and assign resources. Running a company like Apple is more than a good supply chain and we seem to not be getting good products or even bad products on time. But I do like the fact that the CEO has time for celebrity interviews, magazine covers, political stands, coffee table books, etc. I'm sure his ego is feeling very good right now.

It never rains but it pours, oh dear.

Apple will want people to forget 2016 quickly...

Not likely. Remember a few dozen trollers on MR is an infinitesimally small percentage of the hundreds of millions of people around the world who purchase Apple products each year. Apple products continue to have the highest owner satisfaction and are the envy of the tech world.

In the year in review for 2016, Apple will have achieved record numbers of switchers from Android, record quarter for Apple Watch sales, number one holiday product, record quarterly sales for an iPhone, record sales for the Macbook Pro, they reached #1 in the world in wireless sales, they garnered 60% of the entire worldwide market for premium headphones, they are adding a million Apple Pay users a week and in 2016 they zoomed to #1 and have 75% of the US market for contactless payments, they are adding a million Apple Music subscribers a month and zoomed past the major players to reach #2 in the world, and so on. Every tech company should be so lucky to have had such a year!

Up front admission, I don't own any AirPods. Trouble is I use to be happy to pay Apple's premium prices because I felt I could trust the brand and the support if an issue did arise. The products were head and shoulders better their rivals and that made the purchasing decision easy.
This. This. This.
Apple is charging above premium prices already. For that price tag one can expect perfection -inculding every single unit delivered to end-customers to be properly tested. Apple still does proper engineering under the hood (unlike e.g. Samsung who sugar-coats cheap tech - and: No, it's not just the Note7, that's only the tip of the iceberg). It's also sad, that at those price tags they don't offer 3 year warranty on their so-called "Pro"-devices like the new expensive MacBook Pro. 7-Series Dell Latitudes for like 1300€ come with exactly that. With competent phone-support and next day on-site technical support. That's what I call professional.
An OEM that gives only 1 year warranty always makes me question how much they trusts their product...

Might want to re-read the article more carefully. Key bit...

In other words, they are not putting drained Airpods in the case and then drawing down power from the case to charge them back up. They are already charged up to 100%. Conceptually, the case should be discharging as little as no stored energy, but some users are reporting up to 40% in "mere hours" in this scenario.
The AirPods are still draining if not in use, and the case is still charging them as they're draining. Normal.

This. This. This.

Nope. Fantasy. Apple charges appropriate prices for Apple products.

Apple is sure having a lot of problems with batteries, all this from a company that charges a huge premium price for all its products.

There is the out-of-control problem with IOS 10 and the battery drain effecting models of the iPhone prior to the iPhone 7, there is the problem with the new MacBook and it's battery drain problems where even Consumer Reports is not giving the new MacBook a "buy rating" because of significant battery drain inconsistencies during testing, and now the AirPods are allegedly having battery related issues.

i was wondering how long it would take for the first issue to come out. apple really is in trouble

Yep, in serious trouble. You have a keen analytical mind.

1- Tremendously positive reviews and selling Airpods as fast as they can make them
2- Selling iPhones as fast as they can make them and headed to a likely highest sales ever
3- Record sales for Apple Watch and now number 1 smart watch in the world
4- Record sales for launch a pro laptop
5- Wireless sales now number 1 in the world
6- Share of premium headphone market now reached 60%
7- Number 1 in all in one desktop sales
8- Apple Watch likely number one holiday sales product
9- Apple Pay adding one million users a week, and has zoomed past huge competitors Google, Samsung, etc., to now own 75% of US market
10- Apple Music adding 1 million subscribers a month

I could go on, but I think we've proved your point. Apple really is in trouble.

That's one more reason to wait for revision1 a couple of months into the product cycle.
This applies to pretty much all products.

This is the case for ANY tech product. However, Apple used to be better about this than most companies. Or there just wasn't the internet to highlight the flaws.

Or, when you sell hundreds of millions of devices, even 99.99% quality control will leave you with enough problems for clickbait articles that "Users are reporting problems with ______" "Some people report their phones are bending for no reason at all in their pockets" "Three people in Cleveland said their iPhone 7 drops calls"

No problems with mine. There is no evidence that this issue is widespread. In fact, if it were, this thread would be lit up with users reporting personal experience with the problem. There actually seems to be more "no problem here" reports, which is significant, because most of the satisfied customers won't bother to say anything, while those who have will, by human nature, be likely to speak up.

It's important to remember that any comment thread like this will actually amplify the complaints, and that this particular site also appears to be a haven for trolls (undoubtedly some paid by competitors) who scream doom and gloom on a routine basis.

That's not to say no one has had this issue, but it certainly doesn't appear to be common.

As someone that has studied electrical engineering, hired many industrial engineers, and has a degree in computer engineering, I can say with some authority that Industrial Engineering has nothing to do with understanding technology, design and its quality. Yes he should understand process QA, but that is the responsibility of third party manufactures, not Apple.

I'm glad the AirPods have been a relative success. I like the concept of them, I'll stick with wireless Bose that are nice and secure while jogging. However, I hear the mic on these bad boys are pretty good, so good job Apple. My Bose are horrible for calls.

That being said, I can't believe you need a dongle to charge these things to your new Macbook Pros. Timmy loves his Dongles, THOSE have been a run away success!

Nothing in this article gives any indication what percentage of users are affected. Could be .001% for all we know. Mine are working perfectly, and as far as people waiting to purchase until "things get worked out", you are missing out on one spectacular piece of technology. They have exceeded my high expectations. Apple has set a new standard in simplicity and allowing them to work across your entire range of devices (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) with a 3 second setup time. Amazing.

And if you get a pair that doesn't work, return them and you will get a pair that does. You will still be better off than the people who wait 3-6 months because they are afraid of new technology.

You don't really need a new dongle. Since you already have an iDevice (most likely), you already have a dongle if you want to plug the iDevice in to the Macbook Pro. You don't need a second dongle for this accessory. Or you can just plug it into a USB power adapter plugged in to a wall.

Got my AirPods on the 20th. Noticed very quickly the case didn't seem to be holding a charge. After some testing the case losses between 25 to 40 percent in a 24 hour period when the pods are sitting in it at 100%
While I can live with the fact the right hand AirPod is badly aligned/glued there is no way I am putting up with the case drain.

Phoned Apple support who offered an 'Advanced Exchange' which meant returning AirPods now but waiting 6 weeks for new AirPods to be shipped to me - due to 'no replacement stocks'. Have several days remaining before I have to initiate a return so hopefully might be able to pick another set up locally before returning originals.

Very disappointed at this outcome.

I last used and charged mine on Saturday (!) [note for future reference: this is posted on Wednesday afternoon]. The AiPods are showing 100%, the case 89%. I cannot complain about that at all. The sound quality is fine for earbuds, they stay put even through active exercise and the convenience is tremendous. I thought they were very spendy but I'm a happy owner.

Actually it did wear off many years ago, you should have put snappier into your reply and the world would be ROFLing and wetting themselves.
Release notes for the currently closed beta of AirPods firmware v1.1:
The battery discharge is even snappier.

Charged both to 100 percent, left in the case, unused and unconnected to a charger, for 8 days, and still 90 percent available in the case. So, about 1 percent loss per day.
