This is news for people that are outside the 14 day window. I for one will be returning my iPad 3 for the new iPad, but I am in the window. If I weren't then this would be big news.

My point was that Apple regularly accepts returns for stuff that's long past the 14-day window and sometimes even past the 30-day window if the customer is truly unhappy with it.

It's a talent to find a way to blame back no matter what. You should find your spot in politics if you're not already; you'll be quite successful.

lol....are you really serious with that quote??
u buy something, a nwe model appears and its the fault of the company...oh wait...u havent bought! u r 'applehater' :p

----------

Don't upgrade yet, wait for another few years until Apple introduces the Ipad 10 so that you won't get scammed

+1 to that :p

I'm gonna try and see if they can switch mine, even though I've had mine for two months. There is absolutely no signs of wear and tear on mine.

Its a bit on the bum side as my daughter got me an ipad3 for my 50th a few months ago, but does it really mater? its a great bit of kit. Would be more hacked of if I ran out of navy rum :)

Can we get a 6 month window for those who get scammed by Apple back in March?

Scammed??? Did they promise you that there would be no more updates this year? Did they sell you something that didn't work or now doesn't?

Nope, nope, nope. No scam

----------

i wonder if they'll still serve you 3rd gen ipads if you break it and use your applecare+ ADH.

Yes.

Apple should've allowed iPad 3 users a discount in buying the updated new new iPad to show their good faith. But anyway, when they dropped the number from the name I should've known. Bummer.

After this early update incident, I found that iMore and John Gruber are the 2 most reliable news sources. iMore first reported that there will be another big iPad coming , and John actually guessed this one year earlier... I'm not sure if Apple really thought that last year.

It might be a silly question or just wishful thinking. I bought the new iPad, 14 days ago through Amazon. Can I exchange it at the Apple Store?

Returns go through The seller, not the manufacturer

----------

If I sell my iPad 3, does AppleCare transfer, or do I have to cancel it?

On second thought, I have AC+. I can smash my iPad at any time and get a new one. I should wait until after the new year and see what my chances are at getting a new model... :)

Apple care stays with the device and is for the same device. Even if you break it you are getting an iPad 3, not a 4 or 5 and you can't pay the difference etc. and yes they have factories still making older items for service swaps

----------

I'm apparently on my 27th day of owning an iPad 3 so I shall be forcefully trying to return it tomorrow for the new one. Lets hope the Apple foot soldiers are in a good mood.

Try not 'forcefully' requesting it.

Generally rule of retail, if you want an exception don't go it demanding it like an entitled asshat.

Say what you will, 2 generation of a product from any company within one calander year will raise eyebrows. Apple had become a parody of itself it seems.

If anything they should have retained the 3rd gen as iPad Retina, and the 4th gen as Retina Pro or some variation. And not phasing out a 7 month old product.

It's a bit rich to say the least.

and leaves those who bought it with a bad taste in their mouths.

Please refrain from speaking for anyone but yourself because you don't know what anyone else is thinking or feeling

For example, I have zero issues with them doing the update now and the only bad taste in my mouth is from the 'on tap' I had with dinner

----------

Erm no they didn't.

I am very surprised this "news" as this has always been the Apple policy. If you buy any Apple product which is the made out of date due to a new release of hardware with 30 days you can return it.

Official policy is 14 days from the announcement. Managers have leeway to go out to 30 days for customer service. Many do it, particularly in big cities cause they don't want to deal with pissy customers in their faces.

Apple are past masters at ***ing off the pro market, but they should not believe they can get away too long with doing the same to their consumer market.

I wonder how many people would get upset if they bought a $30,000 car only to find out that the engine gained double the horsepower at the same cost after being on the market for only 7 months.

Apple is doing a power move on your wallets. They know Apple faithful will pony up the cash just in time for the holidays. Next February/March is not going to be the same without an Apple announcement.

I bought the iPad 1, 2, and 3rd generation. I thought I was Apple faithful. Thanks for letting me know I am not. This 4th gen iPad isn't tempting me at all. It would be a great upgrade from a first or second gen iPad, but I'll wait for the next one, and then I'll see what it has to offer.

If anything, this move has saved me money. Even if I'm destined to buy next year's model, it will probably be released in the fall. So I will get a year and a half out of my current iPad (or two and a half years, if next year's model doesn't seduce me). I'll also get another year of use out of the 30-pin cables and speaker dock that I already have.

I'm an Apple user, and and Apple fan. I guess I'm not Apple faithful, though.

Hear, hear! Speaking for the masses when you're really just expressing your own opinion makes the world see you as a fool.

Everyone knows that.:D

Good idea, And while you're at it, could we get a year window for those who got scammed by Apple back in 2011? I had no frikkin idea they were going to release a 4 inch version of an iPhone for basically the same price.

It's almost as though Apple doesn't want me to upgrade my six-month-old iPad 3 to the iPad 4, any more than I want to do it.

However, if you want a discount on the 4th gen iPad for being a 3rd gen iPad owner, it's easy to get. Sell your 3rd gen model, and use the proceeds towards the purchase of the 4th gen iPad.

The 3rd gen model has a "feature" that the new one doesn't, which is compatibility with the old cables and docks. You're likely to find a healthy market of first-generation iPad owners, or even iPhone and iPod Touch owners who are willing to upgrade to the 3rd generation iPad and get more use out of their peripherals.

The best part is that you'll leave Apple out of that part of the equation, and you'll pay a lower net price for the new one than if Apple offered a modest discount for your trade-in.

No point in arguing with you since you demonstrate you clearly can't grasp the concept I've put before you. I never said the word scam. You did. Apple has broken their yearly hardware update of iOS devices with this latest update. People that bought the ipad3 on launch feel they got somewhat of a raw deal. If you don't understand then don't try to, I wouldn't want you to injure yourself.

Well nikhsub, I agree with you and there are many others. Some of these "it's all okay that the ipad 3 was replaced in just 6 months because Apple can shaft me and I like it" people could do with a lesson in consumer rights. They sound like they work for Apple with some of the lines they use. Corporate speak.

What if you don't have the box anymore?

Had anybody heard of they do this in Europe as well?

Ugh. That would be terrible! This is clearly a minor refresh. Slapping a "Pro" label on it would be ridiculous.

I can imagine the derision such a move by Apple would receive on message boards like this one.

I hope you've finally learned your lesson about "yearly" hardware updates. They were a false sense of security all along. Apple has been signaling for many years that they don't want to be chained to a yearly update cycle. And they've been doing it in many ways:

  • They stopped participating in MacWorld, because they were expected to give a keynote announcing new products that might or might not be ready for release.
  • We're still on iLife '11.
  • Mac Pro?
  • The iPad no longer has a number printed on the box.
  • The iPhone 4s broke the yearly cycle of being released in June, and came out in October.
  • This year the iPhone 5 came in September, a humiliating slap in the face of the people who bought the 4S the previous October and felt compelled to upgrade their 11-month old phone.
  • Now Apple has literally* stomped on the faces of those of us who bought the third generation thinking Apple would have the decency not to improve the iPad for at least one revolution of our planet around its star.

*No, I don't mean "literally" in the literal sense. I mean "literally" in the figurative sense.

just out of curiosity, when you bring in your ipad for replacement (apple care), do they give you a brand new one?

If yes, I wonder how long until they run out of the "old" Ipad 3's. =D

They won't. They still have the first iPhones as a replacement and also the first iPad. Apple doesn't upgrade or downgrade your devices due to their supplies. It will be the same.

I just got an iPad 3 LAST WEEK, sent from a class after it ended as a reward. Think I could switch that for an iPad 4? I REALLY HOPE SO… :p

Note again. LAST WEEK.

It sounds like this was FREE iPad that was given to you last week. Without a receipt, Apple has in their system a way to bring up purchases; the serial number will be used. I've done this. Now, if you discover was purchased >30 days, I'm pretty sure Apple won't accept it. Though it is a gift, Apple saw it as a purchase. The original customer simply waited when to give the iPad. So, now you have to find out if it purchased >30 days ago, "last week" doesn't matter Apple regards to sale/purchase.

Also, this was a FREE iPad! Just enjoy the one you have. The one given to as a reward; it may or will have some sort of sentimental value. The iPad 3 & 4 are the same except for A5 and the A6X chip. If you want a "fast" iPad to play a lot of games then go to 4. But, I doubt you would hardly notice anything else between the 3&4 during normal usage and browsing.

So the only new thing is the updated A6x chip?

Yes, and the "lightning" port (blech!) unless Apple is yet to enable it yet on iO6, maybe. I have a 64GB Black VZW iPad, I don't use it much, it just lays on my coffee table or its dock. Of course I want the best and the newest thing out there, but a change like this hardly makes want to pick it up and use it regularly again.

32 Day old iPad

Oh no!! I have a 32 day old iPad 3! Just outside of the 30 day window and the Apple store has confirmed they wont swap for the new model.

I'll just have to keep enjoying my current one!

Just imagine 2 weeks old of 2 new iPad 64 GB LTE model that I have!!!

This changes things

Not gonna jump on the I hate Apple bandwagon, they have the right to update their products. However, I have to say many people will think twice before investing in Apple products again, not to invest in another product, but simply to hang around and see if somethign else is coming up very soon. Wonder how this will affect the long term relationship Apple built with its customers over the past decade.

Didn't Apple give $200 credit to the original iPhone adopters after announcing the 3G? Anyone remember why?

I think my next iPad is going to be a Mini, Retina Mini, which should be released in the next... 3 months. I will replace my PC with a Surface (not RT) if Windows 8 takes off, and that will be my big (work) tablet.
