I’m not getting this. I have an Apple Pencil 1, with a male lightning port. WhenI bought it, some years ago, it came with a little adapter which turned the male into a female. So I could charge it with a standard lightning cable. Are the Apple Pencil 1s no longer sold with this little adapter in the box?

Apple is causing more confusions and now people in MacRumors are struggling to figure out the relationship of USB-C plug, USB-C receptacle, Lightning plug, and Lighting receptacle for using the first generation of Apple Pencil on the 10th generation of iPad.

Old stocks comes with the lighting to lighting adapter. New 1st gen stocks comes with USB C dongle. But you need the new USB C dongle to pair with the new iPad.

I really don't understand why the designers decided to stick with the antiquated 1st generation pencil. An intelligent choice would have been to support the second generation pencil and upgrade the existing cameras to the centre stage. The price increase would have been justified at that point, and the iPad would have been a fantastic entry-level model.
Check the teardowns of iPad with Pencil-2-support and look how big the charging-coil-aparatus is.

Sure, but then you'd have to have the USBC-USBC-cable for charging the iPad + a USBC-Lightning cable + Lightning-Lightning-adapter for charging and pairing the Pencil.

Adapters all the way down.

I think they are, but I think this specific issue is the USB-C adapter is needed to initially pair the 1st gen pencil with the 10th gen iPad.

Apple Pencil, Lightning adapter, extra tip, and USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter (required to pair and charge with 10th-generation iPad).

Yea, that's what I'm saying. They wouldn't need to change the camera position. Simply stay in portrait mode with the upgraded centre stage wide cameras found in the Air 5 and support for the gen 2 pencil.

The USB-C to Pencil adapter however isn't actually in the box, they give it to you in a separate box when you purchase a Pencil.

Which is why it's been taken off sale.

Shame on you, Apple. Is this Tim Cooks version of „think different“ and „just works“ in 2022?

Could someone please male an artwork of this fail showing the „think different“ words?

What they should do is included the pencil with the iPad with an increase slightly; since they raised the price this year of the iPad.

I think what this whole saga really demonstrates is just how ridiculous the OG Apple Pencil really was. It should never have had a male Lightning connector poking out the back of it to begin with. The entire concept of having it precariously hanging out of an iPad was preposterous then. They should have just stopped selling it when it was usurped by Apple Pencil 2. Most likely Cook had a box of unsold stock under his bed 🙄

Think Different

Something something Tim Cook bad; something something Steve Jobs would never.

Check out all of this stuff that "just works".

I can't thing of any other accessory than the pencil !
  • Dj controllers
  • Headphones
  • DAC's
  • Any iPod Compatible Speakers
  • Cameras
  • SD card readers
  • Docks
  • Video lights
  • Flash Drives
  • barcode scanners
  • credit card scanners

..... the list goes on.

However it is far more convenient to charge a Logitech crayon which has a female lightning port. So a cable I already have or a cable for a dollar will do just fine.

Could never understand why Apple did not do it that way.

Anyways (non-Apple, but branded) male USB-C to Female lighting adaptors are around $2, Female to Female lighting adaptors are a similar price.

I think the difference here is the Pencil is marketed as core to the iPad experience whereas these legacy port connectors weren't.

We all know Steve Jobs, or anyone vaguely competent, would not have signed off on such a janky solution.

Apple could have pioneered the USB-C connector and not have this problem now; but I guess selling proprietary Lightning cables where you can get some dough on each sale through their program probably made that decision easy...
Crayons have a Female Lightning port (currently).
Yeah, which is chargeable with the packaged USB-C cable and does not need an extra dongle... unlike the Apple Pencil 1st Gen.

Not even halfway close to the stupidity of this situation.
Those adapters were a necessity, this is just a cashgrab.

Buying a $9 adapter instead of replacing your $99 pencil is not a cash grab.

Including the adapter when you buy the Pencil is not a cash grab.

Letting you use your existing Pencil with your iPhone cable is not a cash grab.

This isn't a cash grab, its an inventory issue which is ironic because TC is the supply chain/inventory king.
