This was my first thought -- what if I have an older iPad, like my iPad Pro 10.5, that works with the 1st gen and decided I wanted to go and buy the Pencil even though they have them in stock?

I'm just SOL because Apple decided to block everyone from buying it because they were stupid enough to release one model that requires an out-of-stock adapter? Dumb.
And this was my other question too. If you have a pencil that crapped out, you can't get a replacement?

Yea, that's what I'm saying. They wouldn't need to change the camera position. Simply stay in portrait mode with the upgraded centre stage wide cameras found in the Air 5 and support for the gen 2 pencil.
They already changed to Center Stage on the 9th gen iPad. The 10th gen has both Center Stage and the landscape repositioning.

A lot of people on this forum have been wanting Apple to reposition the camera, but I don’t think any of us expected Apple to only do it on the non-Pro iPad and create a new problem by preventing Pencil 2 charging on that edge as a trade off. They would’ve been better off waiting until they could figure out how to have both landscape camera and Pencil 2 support before repositioning the camera.

So I agree with you, but I was just pointing out that the 9th and 10h gen iPads both have Center Stage already. The repositioning of the camera just helps it to look like you’re making better eye contact with people on a video call. It just adds to the already-helpful Center Stage feature.

I’d say the 10th gen iPad is a decent purchase if you can find it on sale for less closer to the holidays, but don’t buy it if you frequently use the Apple Pencil. It’s basically good for everything but that.

What an absolute mess. They should’ve just bit the bullet and updated the gen 1 pencil to have a female USB C port.

Continue selling the Apple Pencil (lightning) for institutions and lightning-based iPads, sell the Apple Pencil (USB-C) for the 10th gen iPad (and presumably future entry level iPads unless somehow a gen 3 design is compatible across the board), and then have the Apple Pencil “Pro” be the magnetic style.

This entire situation is so short sighted and gross. They made a unique keyboard and case for this product but completely half-assed the pencil story. It’s like running a marathon and then deciding to lie down 10 feet from the finish line.

I see no problem here. You also need this adapter to use lightning wired headphones. They aren’t going to change the ends to type c on the devices to make them compatible with the port. IMO the base iPad shouldn’t get anything the more expensive models have except for type c. No pencil 2, promotion, quad speakers, laminated display, etc.

Let me get this straight: so if I want to buy a 9:th generation iPad I cannot buy an Apple Pencil gen 1 even though those two are compatible? Or do I beg the sales clerk to go get me one anyway?
Thats what I'm thinking. I traded my 8th gen a couple months ago for a switch because I was planning to get the gen 9 after the price dropped. It didn't but I'm still gonna get a gen 9

Is this cable the solution for *any* Lightning accessories (hardware with a male Lightning plug) with newer USB-C devices? If so, it would enable me to use those items again with my iPad and in the future if/when the iPhone goes USB-C.
To use any Lightning accessory with a USB-C device, you can just use an iPhone cable; in fact the Pencil originally came with a Lightning adapter so you can connect it to the iPad-10 with an iPhone cable. The pencil needs a cable adapter because it is unique in that it has a male Lightning plug instead of a female Lightning receiver.

The adapter is type c to female lightning. You need it for any lightning male ended device such as pencil 1 and wired headphones

The move will ensure customers of the new iPad are not left without a way to charge their Apple Pencil.
There's already an adapter in the box to charge the Pencil from a Lightning cable, isn't there? I know my kid's Pencil came with one a while back. Charging it from the iPad, it looks like the world's most expensive and fragile lollipop.

But can you pair it without the new adapter?

This new iPad appears to have been created exclusively with school business in mind. They don't want to anger the schools by forcing them to purchase the second-generation pencil.
I don’t think that’s a good excuse, but Apple could’ve made it compatible with both (adapter for the first gen pencil, attached to the side for second gen).

Select Apple Stores in the United States have suspended the sale of the first-generation Apple Pencil until stock improves for the USB-C to Lightning Adapter, which is needed to charge the pencil with the new entry-level iPad, MacRumors has learned.

Apple-Pencil-iPad-Adapter.jpeg

The 10th-generation iPad is only compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil, which is equipped with a USB-C port. To charge the pencil with the iPad, customers must use a USB-C to Lightning Adapter that was at one point last week facing up to a one-month delay.

Apple will offer the USB-C to Lightning Adapter in the box with the first-generation Apple Pencil, but shipments for those boxes have yet to arrive at Apple Stores. Stores have been instructed not to sell older first-generation Apple Pencil models until the new shipments arrive.

The move will ensure customers of the new iPad are not left without a way to charge their Apple Pencil. The new iPad was made available for purchase at Apple Stores this week. According to Apple's online store, the USB-C to Lightning Adapter is estimated to ship in one to two weeks.

Let me get this straight: The new Ipad only is compatible with the old Pencil, but Apple is going to stop selling the old Pencil because of USB-C concerns? This is like a mouse trying to chase it's tail isn't it?

This will be remembered as the laughing stock of recent Apple launches.

Also we should note that Apple came up with a way to make the Pencil 2 less practical than the Pencil 1.

Look at that. You need a CABLE to charge your pencil. Neither the 1 nor the 2 looked that clumsy.

We're talking about Magic Mouse charging levels of clumsy.
Dude this is way beyond Magic Mouse. Magic Mouse simply suffered from an unfortunately placed connector so you couldn’t really use it while charging. This, however, is a whole new level of stupid.

Couldn’t you just stick it in an iPhone or something to charge it? Or do you need the adapter to pair it with the iPad too? I’ve never owned the first generation Pencil, so I have no idea…

Honestly this whole thing is so stupid. They should’ve just kept the camera in portrait orientation and had the magnets on the side for the second generation Pencil support if it was gonna be this big issue.

I don’t know if you can Bluetooth pair the Pencil. When I set mine up years ago, plugging it into the iPad’s Lightning port automatically paired it.

The new one is just so much more convenient. Just attach it to the side of the mini/Air/Pro and boom — it’s paired. Using the original Pencil on this 10th generation iPad is questionable, like that Lightning port on the bottom of the Magic Mouse…

Agreed. I just replaced that iPad with one of the new Pros. The 2nd gen Pencil is so much better. Even just the texture is better for control over the smooth 1st gen.

Check the teardowns of iPad with Pencil-2-support and look how big the charging-coil-aparatus is.

Sure, but then you'd have to have the USBC-USBC-cable for charging the iPad + a USBC-Lightning cable + Lightning-Lightning-adapter for charging and pairing the Pencil.

Adapters all the way down.

Connect the Pencil to the Lightning female-to-female adapter in the box, connect a Lightning to USB-C cable, and connect that to the iPad’s USB-C port. No?

I really don't understand why the designers decided to stick with the antiquated 1st generation pencil. An intelligent choice would have been to support the second generation pencil and upgrade the existing cameras to the centre stage. The price increase would have been justified at that point, and the iPad would have been a fantastic entry-level model.
But some, maybe many, people consider the horizontal camera placement to be more important than Pencil 2 compatibility. I suspect more people use iPads for video communications than use a pencil

This really is a new low for Apple. If they didn’t want to support the 2nd gen pencil, they should have rereleased the 1st gen with a USB-C port. Simple as that.

Adding another hardware-variant is significantly more work than just coming up with an adapter.
Plus then you'd have stock of two otherwise deprecated devices.
