Nope. You can chose either 24fps or 23.976fps.

And if the issue was related to the HDMI frame rate, the drops would be consistent in time instead of happenning randomly.

I've experienced this in multiple Shield models and devices. I suspect the issue is rather in how Android implements video decoding or maybe how OS stuff in the background might interfere in video decoding. Something weird is that I've never seen this in Plex, only in Netflix and other streaming apps.

I tried using the refresh frame rate app, or the beta match frame rate feature, but these never worked consistently. Sometimes the fps was great but the audio was out of sync by like 2 seconds, sometimes the video kinda froze and ran at 1fps, etc.

Ah, my apologies. I misunderstood you all this time, then.

Strange issue indeed.

I’ve seen reports from the related Apple forums thread that the new version has not fixed the issue. I have not had the chance to update mine, but doesn’t sound encouraging.

About two weeks ago I bought my Apple TV 4k so I could try Apple Music with Atmos though my Yamaha RX-A2050. Atmos works fine on that AVR with blu-ray disks and a Fire Cube. And with Tidal. But Atmos is unlistenable on the Apple TV because of the stutter. I've tried new cables, wireless and wired ethernet, resetting, etc. Nothing worked. So this morning I updated it to version 16.0. It made no difference. Atmos music stutters and stops. Horrible. Just put it in a box to send back to Amazon.

tvOS 16 has been working great for me.

After dozens of hours of watching Atmos content, I only heard a small pop once coming from my height speakers in the celing. The audio has never dropped out.

@pier

Have you tried changing the audio mode of the apple tv from auto to 16 bit?. That solved it completely for me.

I updated to the beta version of iOS 16 and it still crackles and pops. Also I noticed really bad black pixelation during dark scenes on the Apple TV. No issues on the shield. A bit disappointe

A cluster of Apple TV owners over the last several months have been complaining about several issues when using external speakers with the Apple TV and attempting to listen to Dolby Atmos audio.

A thread on Apple's support forums, which started in September 2021 and has over 25 pages of users sharing complaints, chronicles how users are experiencing issues with their Apple TV and Dolby Atmos. According to users, when listening to Dolby Atmos content, audio will sometimes either completely cut out and go silent, goes out of sync with the videos on the screen, or is choppy and stutters.

While there are some users who are experiencing the issue across Apple TV apps, a large portion of the complaints come from when users use the Netflix app. Some users have found that changing audio settings and disabling Dolby Atmos entirely solves the issues. Apple released tvOS 15.4.1 last month and that update does not seem to have addressed the bugs. Are you experiencing similar issues? Let us know down in the comments.

I am just starting to have this issue. I have had the Apple TV 4K since July 2022. Cracking noise on some movies on Hulu and Prime Video. I have tvOS 16. Why did this just start happening when it never happened before? I am connected to a Pioneer receiver. Seems this is still an issue for lots of folks.

Started using Beta for Apple TV , again no Atmos on Netflix. So I will switch back to 16.0 and see if is fixed.

No change switched from Beta to 16.2 and no change. Netflix Dolby atmos not working in either. Any Advice? NO ATMOS ON NETFLIX

Everything has been pretty solid on 16.1 for me. So I think something is going on with Netflix and the ATV. Last night just about every show and movie had the Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos badges replaced with UltraHDR 4K badges. Atmos wasn't listed. On the Netflix app for my Sony TV, the shows/movies all listed DV and DA on the info cards.
But when I checked one of the shows when it was playing, the Sony reported DV. I did not check to see if Atmos was playing.

Works fine on Roku 4

I had also sound issues while Dolby Atmos was activated on apple TV 4K. These are completely resolved by using the an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. I have two HDMI Ultra High Speed cables in place (appleTV to Sounder and Sounder to TV). Starting with Premium High Speed HDMI standard Atmos is supported. Details on standards: www.heise.de/tipps-tricks/HDMI-Kabel-Welche-Unterschiede-gibt-es-5074567.html . With calbles of lower HDMI standard the sound disappeared every few minutes for a few seconds.

sounds exactly like wifi issues, low signal, too many devices, interference. Not experiencing it here at all
Sorry not the case I’ve been having this issue for almost over a year I have wired high speed internet and high speed hdmi cables tried everything unplugged everything restarted everything rebooted everything turned off match content it works for a bit then it happens again and it’s not just Netflix. The only way I’ve found to fix it is to turn off the atmos option on the sound settings to just Dolby digital but when you sell a product pushing Dolby Atmos and it doesn’t work that’s a problem who knows maybe someone will file a class action suit against Apple. Ha right!

Hi, you mention High Speed HDMI. Do you refer to the HDMI standard when you say "High Speed" (= HDMI standard 1.3 and 1.4)? You should try with "HDMI Ultra High Speed" cables (2.1) or at least "Premium High Speed" cables (2.0). As far I know only HDMI 2.0 and higher support Atmos.

That’s not correct.

The audio for Atmos that is sent for streaming programs is only sent at a paltry bit-rate of 640kbps and does not require HDMI 2.0 or 2.1. You need the better cables for 4K resolution, specific other features, or higher bit-rate audio, but not for Atmos streamed to the Apple TV.
