Okay, mine is week 28 (the 4th and 5th numbers of the serial number), and 3G is crap. We continually put the phone in 2G mode.

Where do I find the Model number?
ps. Is it just a matter of going to an Apple store to replace?

grega the model number can be found in settings/general/about. near the serial number.

i have a week 27 489x on optus. i have also had a new sim, no help. i also tried the new sim in a model 500x (from memory) at my store of purchase, didn't help either.

edit - i have heard that people can 1-1 exchange at apple sydney, but they are charged a $40 restocking fee. you might like to call apple and confirm/deny this first.

I'm probably going to get flamed for my voice of reason again but here it goes.

My iPhone 3G data access on Fido seemed to be way below what I would get on edge starting from about 5pm approximately until around 7pm. That happens to coincide with the time most people in my time zone would be leaving work.

When my cab came to pick me up after after 7:30pm, I was getting 1.5 Mbps data speed while we were in motion and my cab driver said that he had been experiencing slow data on Rogers with his iPhone earlier in the day and yesterday.

To me, this smells of network overload and not a hardware issue. Problems seem to crop up during potential heavy use times in the same location where I'm getting good data speeds at other times in the day. Interestingly, Fido's unlimited calls start at 5pm if you pay extra.

PS. vandozza, welcome to my ignore list. Pot, meet kettle.

i just find it funny you're claiming to be a "voice of reason," yet you refuse to acknowledge that this issue is happening all around the world.

you also don't acknowledge the international posters here who either have had issues with their iPhone, or are providing links to international iPhone users with valid complaints.

report me again for speaking my mind but, if you don't read these posts people are pointing you to, then no-one can help you be less ignorant of the issue.

Thanks - I was looking in iTunes, should have tried the iPhone itself!

Okay so I'm week 28 model 500x, you are week 27 489x. We're both on Optus. Both having problems.

One report of newer releases being better isn't enough for me to spend $40... anyone else finding similar?

don't take that as the final word. thats what i recall someone posting i think at mactalk, or on the apple discussions (the $40 cost of exchange in sydney apple store)

Bars and drops

I live in an area with one tiny little bar and no dropped calls. I bet there are only a handful of iPhones where I live. I wonder if this is network congestion.

If he isn't answering that directly, it means he doesn't want to because he probably has no answer for it

Especially after the admission from Apple themselves.

Apple admitted to a problem which affects 2% of the phones.

People are drawing a conclusion that Apple has admitted that the problem of 3G reception as theirs entirely.

They have only admitted to ONE problem which affects 2% of the phones. And they have addressed it with a patch.

Key point - they have not addressed if there are any additional problems which affect 3G reception, and have not addressed who owns that!

Because 3G reception definitely seems to be affecting more than 2% of iPhone users!!!

Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree with you. I was just commenting on another poster who claims that this issue is either non-existant or so tiny.

And I wasn't flaming you. I just wanted to point out this little subtle point. :) I don't think this dance is over just yet. I still think ATT has a big hand in it. I'd love to see real world bar results for edge and 3G vs their beautiful 3G coverage map that their marketing department put out.

"More Bars in More Places"

"More Bars in More Places"
Because of the frustration of the network you are going to need a drink at every one of those bars!

Brings new meaning to the tag line doesn't it...
