Google has released a statement saying that it is aware that some iOS users are having difficulties connecting to Gmail and that they are working on a fix, according to All Things D.

Users have reported receiving an error -- "mail service imap.gmail.com is not responding" -- when trying to fetch new mail on the iPhone or iPad.
We're aware of a problem where Apple Mail IMAP users are unable to sync with their Gmail account and are seeing a username and password error. We have found that a vast majority of users are exceeding IMAP bandwidth limits and are continuing to investigate.
Google has posted about the issue and some possible temporary fixes in its Gmail Known Issues help forum under 'POP, IMAP and Sync', but the company does not yet have an ETA on a final resolution.

My many Google Apps email addresses seem to be working fine.

I'm glad Google's usually dependable but I wish Apple would go ahead and let iCloud stuff be as flexible as GAFYD is.

Google is already slacking with iOS, smh.

And we're talking about the native mail app from iOS? Isn't really stated clearly, unless I'm getting blind ofcourse. Nevertheless, never had any issues whatsoever.

"Apple Mail IMAP users are unable to sync with their Gmail account"

Google makes it sound like it's just an issue with people using Mail on their Mac. MacRumors' usage of the Gmail iOS App's icon threw me off too though.

Gmail still works fine if you use connect to it as an Exchange server (m.google.com).

On my iPhone I have numerous gmail accounts (personal, several work/business Google apps accounts) all connecting as Exchange, and they have been fine. My wife connects via IMAP and has had the problems described; I switched her over to the Exchange method and it's all good.

Using the Gmail iOS app seems to work just fine. I actually stopped using Mail.app once Gmail made their latest update with Push notifications.

POP Mail retrieval has been an issue for several days with my Gmail accounts on my iPhone, I didn't think there was anything to it until now. Glad to have seen this.

I don't use the Gmail option in mail accounts

Go to Exchange and use m.google.com as the mail server

Then you get push too and it hasn't been down the last 2 days :D

They don't want that level of compatibility.

They want you to log into webmail to use their proprietary mail features and look at ads. That's how they make money. When you connect to Gmail via a standalone mail client, you aren't helping advertisers.

If you care about privacy and security, don't use webmail.

Like I wrote, a standalone mail client.

You know, like the built-in Mail application on OS X (Mail.app) or on iOS. There are third-party applications like Thunderbird, Entourage, Sparrow, etc.

The point is not to use a web browser to read your e-mail. Web browsers have more security vulnerabilities than almost any other application on your system.

Sparrow

Perhaps this also explains why Sparrow for OS X and iOS hasn't been playing ball for me since Thursday...

One of my GMail accounts (fully paid-up Google Apps account) is working fine, the other (free Google Apps account) is not.

This is an an issue for only one of my G hosted email addys. And it's not just on iOS devices. Mail app on OSX has a problem connecting to the same account.

Been using my Gmail account without problems so far on my iPhone. Works fine either with Sparrow or with Mail.
